I own a Plasma TV. Whenever I go to a friend who owns an LCD to watch a movie, I am disgusted.
The film looks as if it was filmed in a studio *every single time*.
I'd like to understand better what makes LCD TV's (maybe not all, but certainly all the ones I've seen) look so horribly bad.
I'm comparing the same movie, from the same source.
Are there LCD TV's that don't look like this and don't cost a gazillion bucks?
Yes exactly, soap opera effect! For a movie or a good quality TV series, it's intolerable.
I'm asking this because I also still own a plasma but since they had the good idea to discontinue them, what will we use next?
OLED?
The people that don't notice this are probably from the same sub-specie that discontinued plasma hehehe
Lol. It has nothing to do with LCD or Plasma. Your friend has the smoothing option enabled (called various things by various manufacturers. It's amazing how some people prefer it or don't notice enough to change it.
Wow. It's actually all of my friends - I tested this at 5-6 different places.
I'll look into this, thank you mate! Next time I'm there I'll wait for him to put his kids to bed then I'll jump on the remote to hack his TV.
If I manage to fix it, I'm sure he won't even notice.
I have a Samsung UN55JS8500 and it has an absolutely gorgeous picture. I have the auto motion plus set to "clear" and I think it is just right for getting rid of motion judder without adding SOE.
The "LED Clear Motion" on Samsung TV setting adds black frame insertion, which yes it doesn't add the SOE, so it's preferable (although it dims the screen).
For Sony, the "Clear" preset also adds minor smoothing, unless you go to Custom and change only the clearness slider while keeping smoothness to 0.
It's called Motion Interpolation and is called different names by different mfrs as mentioned above. LG, for example, calls it TruMotion. Some tv's allow you to disable it altogether, some don't, and some allow to individually set the judder and blur. It's definitely a personal preference thing. Some love it, some hate it, and some just use it for network tv but not for movies (blu-ray for example). Personally I don't like any artificial enhancements and just leave it off.
I usually have it off, but sometimes I turn it on for a few days just to change things up. It makes things look like they were shot on video tape instead of film.
I change it whenever l go to any friend or family's house (remove SOE). I do it without asking! Oh, and most hotel TVs have it on, first thing l do is change it. It is just such a weird phenomenon that most people do not notice it!
auto motion plus should be set to clear by default IMO
