Would the xbox 360 look best on the 4692D ( 1368 rez ) or the 4696D ( 720p upscaled to 1080i )

considering that the 4696D only does 1080p over hdmi.

would it be better to get the 4692D since it's 1368 native. the same goes for the westinghouse 42" lcd which is also 1080p native on all HD inputs.

I def want to run an Htpc on this as well.

Any speculation what the street pricing would likely be..? the 4092s are going for about 33% under MSRP now.. I certainly couldn't see spending an extra $1k for a 96 vs a 92 model..

I guess there's a reason to only discuss MSRP, but when the manufacturer's themselves have "buy now" links for a product that bring you to retailers that aren't selling at MSRP, MSRP becomes a somewhat moot point.

Even on Samsung's site, they don't list the MSRP (at least anywhere obvious unless you dig for old press releases), so its not that easy to figure out.. Eg the Sammy 4092 on the "Buy Now" link from Samsung's site indicates a Reg Price on Best Buy that's different than another linked vendor's Reg Price (eg. Crutchfield or B&H), and forgetting about whatever happens wherever after "adding to the cart".

Additionally, if you compare models on Samsung's site, you don't get MSRPs. Of interest for example for the 4096, you get a "Minimal Advertised Price" of $3799.

Forgetting specific MSRP or other pricing. What value do people put on having a 1080 set vs. a 720 set? For say a 40" TV, would it be worth an additional $500, $1K, $2K ? For Sammy DLPs the MSRP (or actually the Minimal Advertised Price) difference between 2 sets that aside from resolution (eg. the 5086 and 5087 models) seems to be a reasonable $500 difference. Is a greater cost difference justified between LCD TVs?

i don't get all this msrp talking either. Do the forum policemen understand that nobody is selling at msrp? forum is meant to provide information for readers, mrsp is not real information. where is the freedom of speech?

I hope the forum allows me to post this. And I hope samsung adjusts their "msrp" according to this.

Yea I dont under stand the MSRP price rules. I can however see the need to keep this a technical forum filled with information rather than good deals, also to avoid people buying from sites that have prices too good to be true. But it looks like its some sort of Dogma, like its blasphemous to speak of pricing.

CROPPED < OAR < OPEN MATTE -- OOOOH I SAID IT!

Somehow I'm starting to think that it would quite a while til price drops much lower than MSRP, or at least MAP (which per Samsung's site is about $300 less than MSRP)..

See this thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=680973

to quote from the news article that was posted:

"The series lists screen sizes of 32W inches (shipping in July at a $2,299 suggested retail); 40W inches ($4,099, August); and 46W-inches ($4,799 suggested retail), and will be distributed primarily to A/V specialty stores and Pro Group members."

... the bit about distribution thru AV Specialty stores has me worried.. Anyone know if the likes of J&R, BB, CC, etc.. would qualify as such (I would guess not)..?

Some of you guys are nuts. The 4692 will still be sold, and I don't think Samsung will shoot themselves in the foot by pricing 4696 super low. There would have to be at least $1,000 difference in prices on those two sets.

no, if you look at what costco is pricing the sceptre 42" 1080p models, you would get a hint of where these babies are going to be. demanding $4000 for a 40" is just not realistic. The recent reports has it that the big LCD manufacturers are not making much money. However, that's due to the capital investment in the larger capacity plants. They have no choice but to increase their volume and also response to the price pressure to lower the price. Take a look at where the 50" plasma was a year ago, and compare it to the price today.

$1k difference would be fine with me for the 40" given what the 4092 is selling at now.

I spoke with Samsung yesterday, and they said these 1080p sets have been produced and will ship to distributors this weekend.

The dude was pretty darn sure we're talking June release.

I see one Pre-order dealer now, but that doesn't necessarily mean much.

Question: You heard anything about the set's on screen functionality for attached components? A friend with a Hitachi plassy has a neat IR tower that the set send s a beam to and it controls the DVD in a closed cabinet. Thanks.

And my understanding is the smaller 40" is 6000:1. However this is really all about the true 1080p, right?

One pre-order site is saying US$3,598msrp and their price is US$3,398.

However I don't know how reputable the site it.

What I do know is I keep hitting the J&R site to see when they get it. They get the new stuff FAST and on day one, they do free shipping.

I certainly hope you are right.

My fear is that the Sceptre and Westinghouse 1080p sets only have one HDMI. In my book, that makes them worthless, so I have to pay up for the Samsung.

1 - Cable Box

2 - DVD recorder

but come Christmas that DVD Recorder goes on eBay, and HELLO PlayStation 3 with Blue Ray.

I would say those are pretty safe guesses.

I would think the 4096 sticks around $2999 for a while, and doesn't really plummet. There's going to be too much demand as people with 1366 X 768 sets
who say "Look at my HDTV." realize the truth and scramble for a true 1080p set.

What's going to happen to all those 1366 X 768 sets?

I currently have a 3+ year old Sony KZ-32TS1 plassy. 1024 X 1024, pretty sweet in it's day, but only 32". MSRP was $5,999 if I recall correctly, and the 42" was $7,999, out of my league.

You're paying $600 for that?

How about instead of wasting your money, you donate it to a broke college student? *ducks*

Don't know about the free shipping.. they have freight costs associated with at least some of the other Samsung's they currently stock (eg. 4092, 4051) .. running about $150 or thereabouts...

Not yet, but Samsung told me it could be any day now.

That said, you never know how reliable anyone's Tech/Sales Support is.

I'd guess it's under $3000 by Christmas time.

Not that I have money coming out of my butt, but if it debuts at $3599 and dealers are selling it at $3399, I'm in and I'll be reviewing it for you dudes.

I have wondered this myself. Does anyone know about this type of upscale and its quality in general (obviously not particular to this set)? I heard from a CC guy that it would be better if upscaled to 1080i than remained at 720p, but I am not sure he was right. Can anyone please help us out here? Thanks a bunch.

Jared

BTW, how did you know that it will upscale to 1080i in the first place?

LOL.

Yes, I'm hearing PS3 could be $499. So if you get Blu-Ray and HDMI plus gaming, I'll buy it.

That's the key with the new 1080p sets, you gotta have at least 2 HDMI ports.

Understood.

I live here in Mahnattan where J & R operates, and the do the free shipping for one day only. The day they get the sets.

It's not that material, like $158.

Ahhh.. you might be better off overall finding an out of state vendor in your case then (you end up trading no freight for sales tax).. eg. perhaps Electronics Expo will end up stocking?
