Also, I have run into problems with DVI and HD-DVD and upconverted DVD. That is, I was using an HDMI to DVI adapter in order to use one of the DVI ports as a HDMI port. Unfortunately both the Toshiba HD-DVD (HD-A1) and Sony DVD (DVP-NC85H) do not communicate with the DVI ports, but work fine with the HDMI port. These DVD players are trying to connect at 1080i which makes the problem worse.

I'll still try to test and compare some other things as time permits though.

Hmm.....

Which video card?.... and what's the problem?....

BTW, you may need to have the display on first before turning on the peripheral players.... especially the toshi HD-DVD player.

Maybe, it's also wise to unplug the westy first and let it reset for few minutes prior to trying anything new.

Well the video card in my Desktop is a Radeon 9700 which isn't exactly new. The problem is that when I increase the resolution above 1280X1024 I get a screen full of video junk. About what you get when you have any monitor that doesn't like what it is receiving. My laptop only outputs via VGA and I don't have any adapters to go from VGA to DVI (or HDMI...) so I only have the one PC to test DVI and HDMI via PC. This is a minor problem though since I can't play any games with that video card at 1920X1020 anyway.

After further testing it is the DVI to HDMI adapters I am using. I noticed that the monitor was receiving something because when the menu button was pressed it showed that it was receiving a 1080i signal. The monitor only displayed solid grey until I jiggled the cable, then I got a picture for a second... The adapter doesn't quite fit the HDMI cable so I'll try another cable and adapter (if I can find one) to see if I can get a reliable connection.

Wow, crutchfield's price is nice. With this new item I doubt you'll need to worry about price protection even with the BB 12% coupon. Crutchfield is a respected retailer.

I managed to recable to get the Gefen switch out of the loop. This unit definitely has more sync problems than my 37w1 did, but so far I'm still thinking it's acceptable. (I'm also thinking I can make these problems all go away as soon as the Crystalio II can be bought here, but I realize that's not an option for most people.)

For example, in pretty much all configurations, when switching to an SD channel I very occasionally see VBI data at the top, but an off/on cycle of the source cures it. Very occasionally when switching to a 720p source the whole image is shifted down and to the right, again cycling cures it.

With the Motorola 6412 (phase II, DVI out), on all three digital inputs, when the 6412 is displaying 720p content at 1080i output (meaning, the 6412 is doing the 720p->1080i conversion), there's a misplaced-and/or-rotated-or-something line or two at the top of the screen. Disappears if I switch the 6412 to output 720p (which I usually take the trouble to do anyway). Never saw this on my 37w1.

Good news (for those that don't use a Gefen switch): with the Gefen switch out of the loop, HD content on DVI2 no longer has the vertical area of garbage on the right side of the screen. Never saw this kind of problem using the Gefen switch on my 37w1.

With the Sony DVR (HDMI out) connected to the HDMI input, I get fairly frequent handshake problems when switching channels, sometimes failing to lock. There's an audible click at each retry (even with sound off/muted). I tried two different cables. No handshake problems on either DVI input.

With the Sony connected to DVI2, with 1080i HD content there's a garbage line at the bottom of the screen that I don't see when connected to DVI1.

Crutchfield $ has gone sweet on LVM-47w1 and my trigger finger is itchy. Are extended Service Plans 3 or 5 years worth it?

JnR does not have a "return" policy, it's an "exchange" policy.

yes thats how they are. Once a salesman in Jnr told me. you are better off buying this at best buy ( can you believe how honest he was ) due to the fact that westinghouse has a special deal with best buy and you may return it, they will come to your house, pick it up, fix it. or in worst case ...replace it for you untill you are happy.

jnr on the other hand....just tells you...deal with manufacturer. this was on the 42" btw.

I hope they changed their policies. I also did not see the 47" on display yesterday. I went there to see it.

Okay, I've been lurking here for quite awhile. Was going to pull the trigger on the 42" Westy, but now the 47" is here and I'm ready. But scared!

Best deal around seems to be Crutchfield. Thought I would buy it and the articulating wall mount (anyone have it?). Will be connecting it to Insight cable via DVI to Motorola DCT6412 DVR (anyone have it?).

Anyone have comments or suggestions? This will be my first HDTV experience (W00t!).

Correction: no overscan on the right, and it's not exactly overscan on the top, the whole image is shifted up, and there's a correspondingly sized blue region on the bottom that's "not there" as far as Win XP is concerned. Doesn't occur on DVI1.

Edit: the up-shift is easily remedied with powerstrip.

Yep, although the RGB values I've calibrated to are different.

Can the onboard speakers on the 47" be used in lieu of a center channel speaker on my 6.1 system?

I was going to get the 3 year one, but since Westinghouse website says they will do in house servicing for 46" and greater (I think for a year), I passed on it.

Best Buy better hurry up and get this thing in stock, not sure how long I will be able to resist the net prices.

Anyone know Crutchfield's policy on dead pixels? They don't offer free return shipping on returns or exchanges for this model, but sounds like they will for damaged units -- does crutchfield consider dead pixels as damage?

The values I posted in this thread (R=243, G=243, B=255) are for the 47w1. I posted different numbers in the 37w1 thread. I'll probably do another calibration tonight when it gets darker.

It's been a long time since I've done that type of thing on a forum, but I seem to remeber I had to upload them to another site and then link to them (with insert image I think?!). If that is true can anyone recommend a site for easy uploading.

I'll try to get pics of XBOX 360, HD-DVD, Upconverted DVD and PC up after I get home from work tonight.

Thanks.

Testing (NOT a TV Pic)
Edit: Tests finished. I'll do my best to get some decent pics up late tonight. I think that the monitor will be displaying at a resolution higher than the camera can take pics but I think they'll still look nice.

Oops.... I some how missed the orginal post on page 9. When I looked at the link, I thought it was on the 37" thread. My bad.

BTW, do you have all the other normal menu settings at default other than color temp at warm?...

I'm very close to ordering one from Crutchfield, but I'm still
trying to hold off until I can order one from local BB. Just in case, I need to exchange and I'm also scared of this huge screen being handled by UPS or other carriers. I'd like to avoid any potential headaches.

I've already spent $2500 on the friggin new fridge for wifey today to justify my new TV purchase. So, I'm 100% committed and will be down $5k total just to have this 47" Westy.

Super long time lurker (since I bought my Olivia LT30HV) and I finally decided to post something today as I really can't believe I did what I did. Anyway long story short I needed a decent sized flat panel for my living room. Never really liked plasma as I use my Xbox 360 and my friends has already suffered some burn in from the online guide from his digital cable box.

Anyway, long story as short as I can make it, I had picked up a 37" Olivia LT37HVS at newegg the other day to hold me over until I could get something bigger later this year. I went to Best Buy to look for a wall mount when I saw the Westi 42" on an open box buy. I had to pick it up. So within a week I had 2 new LCD's, one for the bedroom and one for the living room.

Well, from day one I was experiencing lock-ups on my Westi. I turned to the forum for some answers and sure enough I found them. My set came with v. 1.16 firmware and about 2 dead pixels which I never noticed until about last week. The lockups were getting fairly frequent but with PeterS's SM help the picture was incredible. I was really hoping for a field firmware upgrade or a DIY job to get to v.1.19, but as the 30-day period for me to return this set was nearing, I decided to take it back last night.

Anyway, bottom line, I bit the bullet and just ordered the 47 from CF. Hopefully i'll get it end of next week early week after. I do plan on posting some pics.
