I got a call today from the gentleman at Sony that arranged the dispatch for the replacement set that ended up being worse than my original. He was just checking in to see if I had received the replacement yet. I told him I had, that it was much worse than the set it was supposed to replace, and therefore had to refuse it. He offered to arrange to have another shipped out to me but based on the fact that's it's a complete crap shoot as to wether or not I'll get a good set I don't want to continue to have to take my set off the wall, put it on the stand, etc, etc. Too much of a hassle. He said I could call back whenever and he'd send out a replacement. Through this whole ordeal the guys and gals at Sony have been really great to work with. Now if they'd just fix the dang thing I'd be pleased as punch.

Swizzir, that is awesome news. Good to know that those of us who are planning to wait to return our set seem to be doing the right thing if Sony says they'll ship you a replacement whenever. Thanks for going through the steps and spreading a little bit of calm around here. Would you recommend opening a ticket immediately with Sony (just got my set a couple of weeks ago) or waiting until the situation gets addressed? I don't really want to call them and say I want a replacement, but don't send it yet.

Aquayonex,

I can't find a way to post a link to the Extended Warranty info but I'll tell you how to get ther in a round about way. Go to www.SonyStyle.com and click on FAQs, now click on #11 in the FAQs (Product Warranty Information) and inside that FAQ there is a link "Warranty Page", click on that link and you should see additional links for products and choose the third one down (Televisions (LCD, CRT, Projection)) then click on the last of three tabs (Pricing) and I think you will find what you are looking for.

Later...

My set appears to be perfect in person as the pics don't do it justice. Backlight set to 4, Picture set to 80 and Brightness set to 51.
This set is absolutely beautiful, no stuck or dead pixels and not a cloud anywhere.

Hope this is of some benefit.

Wow pictures like that make me so jealous! I returned my cloudy October 2006 46XBR2 last week and can't wait until the next batch comes out - which hopefully will be cloud free.

I agree. Hopefully Sony will be remedying the situation soon so we can all have sets like that!

I highly recommend calling Sony customer support and opening a trouble ticket. The more people that call the sooner, I feel, the issue will be resolved. After opening a trouble ticket with customer support ask to speak with a technical specialist for the XBR2. They'll ask for your event number (ticket number given to you by customer support). I'd chat with them about the set. Tell them how bad the problem is. If you can, offer to e-mail them pictures.

Can you kindly post a phone number where we should call.

I went to my local Circuit City where I bought the 46XBR2 and expresed to them my concerns about my cloudy panel and getting a less perfect replacement. The manger mentioned that I can get a replacment unit(from Circuit City) even after the 30 day return window has expired. He further mentioned that I should open up a trouble ticket with Sony.

So, I have 2 weeks to decide whether to completely return the panel or just hang on to the panel and hope for a "perfect" replacement.

1-800-222-7669 will get you to customer support. It's with them that you open an event ticket. When you're done with them ask to be transfered to technical support.

I have been lurking around this board for a few days, and thought I would make myself known. I purchased a XBR-2 from CC and will receive the shipment 12/2. Even after reading everything that was posted here, I am taking my shot (or as many as it takes) to get a top flight unit. I will post with my results in a few days. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to make their opinions known.

I hope you don't mind, my LCD is a KDL-40XBR2. Manufactured: Sept 06. I have clouding only noticed at night, and then only on dark shows. It's only noticeable after I looked, and now I know the clouding is there, it's hard not to look, darnit. Actually, mine is more of a haze, with slight clouding.

I called Sony support who directed me to call a tech in my area. That tech (a contractor) called me back. It was hard for me to describe the problems. I said cloudy or uneven backlight noticed in PM hours on dark content. The tech said that some backlight leakage, or unevenness is normal. I told him about how it wasn't normal, and wasn't on all the Sony TV's. Further, I told him about the complaints heard from here and how the Sept 06 LCD's and later are the ones getting these issues.

I was told he would get in touch with Sony and call me back. When I told him you needed to see this at night to experience the "defect" the tech said that maybe he wouldn't be able to see it then. Seemed a bit dismissive of my woes. Then, I explained about how I spent $3,000, and didn't want to see clouds at night, ect.

When/if he comes out, perhaps I should aluminum foil the windows so I can show him what I am talking about? Am I going too far by complaining about this? I really do notice it at night. It is just that the TV is perfect in the day, but at night, you can see the clouds (haze) in dark screens like space, and such. Do you know what I am talking about?

A couple things to try sonydude is to make sure Power Saving is off and Light Sensor is off. With both of those settings off I can see clouding on my set during day time with the lights in the room off.

The Sony tech I'm in e-mail contact with asked me to adjust those settings and let him know what the results were. With the light sensor on made it look a little better. Clouds were still noticeable though. With power saving set to low or high the clouds go away. More so with high than low of course.

I don't know if this is telling but to me, and what I e-mailed to the Sony tech, turning up the power saving setting is not a solution to this issue. It does nothing more than mask the problem.

I just read through the 29 customer reviews on the CC web site for the 46" XBR2 out of curiosity and only read one mention of any kind of problem with the picture. The owner said there was a gray spot in the lower right corner and they talked to Sony and was told is was defective so they exchanged it . Might not be a bad idea for more people with the "clouds" problem to add their reviews to the ones already there and see if the problem gets more attention.

Here it is:

After having witnessed the mugging of a snail by a fellow snail, the investigating officer asked the DMP-BD30 what happened to which the BD player replied "I don't remember...it happened so fast."

Do you know why there is only one mention of any problem? Because CC denies and deletes anything they don't like. I have submitted critical reviews to them before and they have not posted them.

Was borrowing a friend of mine's digital camera today, so I thought I'd snap a pic of my cloudy XBR3 in action, well...kind of. I was only able to snap the no input screen before the battery died, but it clearly illustrates the problem.

The worst spot is the common upper left hand corner, and while it doesn't show up fully in this picture, there is a faint "v" shape of clouds that extends from that point.

I was playing Resistance: Fall of Man on the PS3 last night and noticed it several times. Very distracting. Certainly not what I paid $3k+ for.

swizzir, thanks, turning the light sensor on helped. I don't really like how dark it makes things having the light sensor turned on, so I probably won't leave it on while normal viewing. It was worth checking that though.

I almost think I'm being overly picky, but I swear I can notice it now in dark areas of the screen. It is very subtle and I just am not 100% that I should be complaining because maybe I'm crazy. I guess I'm looking for perfection for my money, and read that other XBR2's have zero, nada, absolutely no clouding? This is true, right?

Is it possible that most people who got 46XBR2 without any problem will never
visit this website? I really hope those of us who posted here are the minority...

Sony XBR used to stand for something. I still have a Sony XBR 36" CRT TV(non-HD) from a few years ago. It is still as beautiful as the day I took delivery. For a non-HD set, it was top-of-the-line.

Come to think of it, the 46XBR2 isn't the only Sony that's having problems. I recently returned two laptop batteries for replacement. My Sony digital camera is also on their recent recall list for LCD screen problems.(though I don't really notice it). Not to mention the 60GB PS3 that I bought on Nov 17. True, I didn't
wait in the cold for a week to get it. I got a pre-order from Toy R Us after only
2.5 hours. It broke down after several hours. The unit simply won't power on.
The Toys R Us manager put me on the top of her list when she gets the next
batch... but who knows when that's going to be...

Despite all this, I'm still eagerly waiting for my 46XBR2... am I just setting myself up for more headaches and hassles?

You have every right to demand perfection for the amount of money that you have paid for your television. You are not crazy.

I totally agree.

Like most of us here I too have been a loyal Sony customer.

Throughout the years I have opted for Sony products (even though they are usually more expensive) because they were providing a quality products that were worth paying a premium to own them.

In the past 2-3 years their build quality has gone to hell and do not even mention the fact that they seem to not even bother trying to be innovative anymore.

Which brings us to the current XBR2/XBR3 situation.

Sony XBR series units were always top notch, number one rated products.

Should this screen clouding issue continue without a formal acknowledgement from Sony and a timely fix this will definately alienate a large portion of their loyal customers...

I just got back from Best Buy. I have to say that they were very helpful and understanding concerning this issue. Not only did they have a August 06 set waiting for me when i got there but they set it up and turned off all the lights in the Magnolia section for me to test. VIOLA!!! NO CLOUDING!!! Huge difference in the picture!

What does it look like exactly with no clouding? What is normal for these sets to look like with a black screen? Are we talking perfectly uniformed black? Do you notice a little light coming from behind the screen? Any haziness or uneveness on a normal (pre-Sept) screen at all? Please be as exact as possible.

I called Sony to report this issue. I already feel like maybe my screen isn't "bad" enough, and that I'm not really sure what the tech will do when he shows up. I'm thinking he will say it's normal or something.

I tried taking a picture, but nothing cloudy or uneven would show up on my 2 megapixel Kodak point and shoot.

If the flash is on make sure it's off to get the best picture showing your cloudy set.

Without clouding it looks blackish grey. Are asking me when I have the tv on a empty input does the black field look uniformly black? The answer is no. If I stare at it I can see some areas that are slightly lighter than others. It does not affect the picture quality as the other set with the clouds.

Thanks, my set has the blackish grey color you are talking about. I also have some slight clouding (hazing actually) that is making me wonder just how much it is effecting my picture (in reality).

I mean, my screen is not perfect or anything, but I'm experiencing that "haze," I mentioned earlier, not so much clouds. Maybe you could call mine, "splotchy with a few cloud streaks." My screen almost looks like a chalk board with a half assed eraser attempt. It's only noticeable at night, NOT in the day.

I called Sony, and got a hold of a tech (contractor), who is suppose to call me back after doing some checking regarding this issue. I'm pretty sure by speaking with him, that I will be pulling teeth to show this is a problem and not my over reading this thread, or being overly obsessive.

To all the people who do or do not have this "clouding" issue, does my set seem like it's fine, or does my "splotchy with a few cloud streaks" seem a little over the top to complain about?

I know it's probably subjective, and I cannot get my camera to record what I'm seeing, so that's out. I can see it clear as day with a black input at night time. Does it bother me, YES. Can I get over it, HELL, I don't know.

Have there been any Sony visits to the home of people with the problems, or good replacement sets coming in with these visits. Also, for those that layed their sets face down on a table, where the clouds seemed to diminish, are they remaining this way, or any clouds coming back? I guess there seems to be no news on the issue, and just curious if any progress or developments are evident with anyone yet.
