Well, I was able to convince CC to exchange with me one of their floor models that I was able to clearly see did not have cloudiness in the store.
Well, when I got home I figured what could go wrong now since it clearly didn't have the problem in the store. To my disgust, there were the clouds again! I'm guessing that either it was too bright in CC for me to see these clouds or they just appeared during the transit and handling of the set.
I was ready to return the set at this point, but I recalled that trick of laying the panel flat on it's face to clear it. I figured I would return it anyway if this didn't work. How could it hurt.
To prevent scratching the screen, I actually just tilted the panel with its stand still attached until it was horizontal, but not actually laying it down.
The result - the clouds went away!!!! Mostly. I still see a very faint amount in the lower right hand corner, but this was a major improvement from before where all four corners of my screen were practically light grey.
With these positive results, I tilted my panel once again and held it there for about 15 seconds this time. The screen once again improved, but not as dramatically as the first time. Hopefully, the micro-fiber cloth will be able to remove the rest of the very faint cloudiness at this point.
So there you go. It works! Kudos to Kontai for sharing this info!!!
btw, this set was built in August 2006 - I believe it wasn't cloudy to begin with, but the moving of the screen seemed to stress the panel and cause the clouds to appear - I know that I wouldn't have missed spotting these clouds in the store considering how bright the corners were.
