I've been putting it off for a while now, but I'd really like to get a 1080p 42 inch lcd. I know that samsung, toshiba, sharp, and sony all make models in this range, but I don't know how to evalute them. I know about resolution, contrast, and size, but how do you measure color reproduction? I'm going to use it with a ps3 for games and movies, as well as for watching high def tv.

I know Sony and Samsung does not have a 42' LCD....so that narrows your choice to Toshiba and Sharp. If it is only for VIEWING would go Toshiba.

Hi Eddie,
I have a 42" AMOI LCD TV which is 1920 x 1080 and 1080P and it is a superb set but the best signal here in UK is the SKY 1080i signal although 1080P Blu Ray recorders are starting to appear. I am planning to be patient and wait for the Sony PS3 to appear around April and use it for both games and HD 1080P DVDs. I paid £1400 for the set including Tax and delivery and did a lot of research before purchase. Amoi seems to be a top quality brand in China which is readily available across Europe but is it available in the USA.

Alan

Sony and Samsung have 40' LCDs, I think 42' would be perfect, but anything in that kind of range would work. What exactly makes one tv better than another, outside of someone's opinion? I know with computer monitors people talk about response times, but that there isn't a good way that they're measured. Again there is also contrast ratio and resolution, but a lot of times reviewers will say things like "inaccurate color reproduction", or that greens don't look good, or that the colors wash, or something like that. How do you know that looking at the sec sheet?

I had never heard of Amoi. I looked that their website and I didn't see any 1080 tvs.

Is there a good website that does objective reviews of tvs? Cnet doesn't seem to do all that many, and I don't know how knowledgeable it is.
