I'm still undecided about which flat panel LCD to buy. I'm thinking about 46" - 50" range.

The thing I want to know is: does it make sense for me to buy a 1080 set? I don't have Blue Ray or HD-DVD and don't intend to buy that for a couple years. And even if I do, it won't be on this set (which will go in the bedroom and won't be my main viewing set).

I will be watching mainly HD (from Comcast cable) and DVD's through an upconverting DVD player.

Does it make any sense to buy a 1080 set or should I simply stick to a 720 set since the difference in resolution will not make an impact since nothing I will be viewing will be native 1080P? Sorry for the run-on sentence

I dream of a better tomorrow... where chickens can cross roads and not have their motives questioned.

if the price difference isn't that much, i'd go 1080 just for future purposes. if you can find a good deal on a 720 now, then go that route.

If what you have stated here is accurate then it's pretty obvious that 1080p would be of no benefit to you.

FWIW - I can see the difference between 720p and 1080i on my 1080p LCD, and 1080i looks better than 720p on it IMO.

You don't need 1080p programming to get the benefit of a 1080p screen. 1080i should look better on a 1080p panel as well. In some cases, it will be difficult to tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p, if the deinterlacing is done correctly.

I'd go for 1080p, as long as you aren't sitting/laying too far away from the TV to see the extra detail.

Exactly, even 1080i source looks better on 1080p screen than 720p. It's something you can benefit now!
