Is it possible to do a proper calibration with a Spyder2 and HCFR???

I mean do you have access to enough colour settings on the XBR4/5???

I know most displays need access to the service menu but the XBR4/5 have more user menus.

I wonder if people could also post some reference to their methods.
For example, is this just what you like, (eyeballin' it) or is this having used an Avia disk ( or some other) or have you just had it calibrated by an ISF certified research labs tech?
That would put your settings in some kind of a context. I, for one would really appreciate that!
I promise I will post my settings as soon as I have them perfect. I'm really busy these days and haven't had the time to devote to achieve the results I'm after. Thanks all, It really is a beautiful set (46' xbr4).

DISCLAIMER: THIS IS FOR THE X3500 ( European version of the XBR5 ), I am unsure if there is any regional variance

OK, my X3500 has been ISF calibrated. Promisingly, the guy said it was the best LCD he'd seen

However, as is typical w/ consumer displays, the colour doesn't ramp in a linear fashion so some trade offs must be made with accuracy in either end of the dark/bright range.

Whilst it is massively improved, I'm sensitive to a percieved Green push in dark areas at these calibrated settings so I will likely experiment more to reach my PERSONAL preference.

With all that said, here are the settings arrived at for various inputs:

PS3 ( RGB range limited, Super White On, 1080p/24 for Blu Ray, HDMI )

Backlight 3
Contrast 70
Brightness 52
Colour 50
Sharpness 10
Colour Balance: Warm 2
White Balance:

Rg-5
Bg-3
Rb -8
Gb -3
bb-3
Full Pixel

.

Sky HD ( over HDMI ) 1080i output

Backlight 3
Contrast 70
Brightness 52
Colour 55
Sharpness 50
DRC OFF

Colour Temperature: Warm2
White Balance:
RG -6
GG-2
BG-3
RB-9
GB-3
BB -3

..

X-Box 360 Premium ( over Component )
Backlight 3
Contrast 70
Brightness 52
Colour55
Sharpness 25
Colour Temperature: Warm 2
White Balance:
rg -6
bg -3
rb -1
bb -2
Full Pixel

..

HTPC ( 8800GTS, DVI->HDMI ) PowerDVD Ultra ( Overlay? )

Backlight 3
Contrast 70
Brightness 50
Colour 55
Sharpness 50
Colour Temperature: Warm 2
White Balance:
RG -6
BG-2
RB-4
Full Pixel

It's a great panel, and is what I wanted my X2000 ( XBR2 ) to be. So I'm happy.

Oh, also, I can imagine the "auto dim" thing pissing some people off ,as in some very specific circumstances ( darkish text on a black background, sparse starry scenes in space ) the autodim thing kicks in. I'm hoping there is some way to disable it, but it rarely crops up in normal use.

Thanks, I will give them a try. What about all the other settings/features? Do you have any of them on? (all those noise reduction, etc)

The other settings are where personal prefence come in.

I have everything set to "Off" near enough ( Gamma, ACE, etc ) and colour space is on standard.

For 1080p/24 and 1080p/50 ( irelevant for U.S market ) I PERSONALLY prefer Auto1 and Standard. This does lead to seemingly unnatural motion ( sped up? ) in some scenes but I far prefer that to judder. Now, this will no doubt be different for U.S folks who not only are used to the inherent limitations of film at 24fps but also 3:2 pulldown. I will say that in my limited testing, having it on auto1/standard w/ my 360 HD-DVD at 1080i/60 led to MASSIVE motion issues. As in, judder to the nth degree.

I still need to mess around more, the set isn't even out in my territory yet, I was lucky to buy a vendor evaluation model and didn't want to watch it much before it was calibrated.

My suspicion is that most U.S people will like either Auto2/Standard or Auto1/Off. ( Film mode and Motionflow respectively )

Full Pixel means that the display does direct pixel mapping at 1080i/1080p. This is critical for use w/ a PC, as scaling is liable to make small text hard to read.

It also should mean, in theory, you get superior quality w/ 1080i/1080p material as there is no scaling of the image.

So, if you're using a HD-DVD or Blu Ray player, make sure you're running 1080p/24 w/ Full Pixel display mode

Has anybody experienced clouding, or shading on the corners on the XBR4 yet? Are they better this year in that regard as compared to last year's XBR2?
Are these problems somewhat adustable, if present?

coma426,

was wondering what some of your PS3 settings are?

BD/DVD Video Output Format (auto, RGB, Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr)
RGB Full Range (Limited, Full)
Y Pb/Cb Pr/CR Super-White (On, Off)

thanks,

Here is a good setting, but I need to see how it holds up, and what changes it needs. XA2 directly into the XBR4 via HDMI 1.3 cable. Calibrated using

Sony KDL-40V2500 1080P LCD
Yamaha YSP-800 Digital Sound Projector

Slumpey, tried your settings on my 40 xbr4 and really like them. The thing I like most about everyones custom settings is the top of the tv is soooo much more less heat. Long Live the backlight!

I haven't tried all the setting posted but yours sure do look good with comcast cable, both hd and regular channels. I'd have to say those are about as good as they will get, but hey I don't have any expertise in this area.

thnx and regards,

Thank you sir. I'm assuming that by 1080p/24 you mean Motion Enhancer set to high?

My co-worker is a major tekkie and did calibrations(well helped) for a former job. I think he did great job with my cable hookup, so I'm sharing, he spent 2 hours on it. Via Component on SA 8300HD DVR cable box on 40XBR4:

Added: This was done at night with room lights turned off.

Custom:

Backlight: 4 (Added: with light sensor off, which I normally keep on)
Picture: 90
Brightness: 45
Color: 60

White Balance:

I am a previous owner of a Sharp LC46D92U. After 2 sets I asked for a refund. I recently purchased a 46" XBR5 and the PQ is excellent, but I am also having problems with "juddering." I have this with SD and HD TV viewing. I am using HMDI from the XBR to the HD cable box. This is very annoying and hope someone could help me with this problem. My decision was between the Sammy 81 and the XBR5 after returning the Sharp. I hope the "judder" can be fixed, I would hate to have to return the Sony if it can not be rectified.

No, it just means that HD-DVD/Blu Ray films are passed to the display in their native format, has nothing to do w/ motion enhancer.

Re: Judder, if you select "auto 1" under film mode, and select "standard" for cinemotion, this should help dramatically. I haven't messed around w/ 1080/60 much yet though, so YMMV

Ah, this appears to make things worse for 60hz material. Stick to Auto2 / Standard.

Thanks for all the help. I read a couple of post which advise to use the Auto2 setting. I have not watch enough TV to see if this has ceased the "judder" and motion problems, but so far so good. Also, gordong11's settings work nice.

I'm still screwing around with the motion settings on this set. So far I think High/Auto 2 is good for DVD and Standard/Auto 1 works well for SD/HD satellite. This is a very confusing subject to me so I'm hoping we have an "expert" who can shed some more light on these settings (I'm still not sure how they relate to the 24fps/60fps/120fps modes)! Otherwise I almost cut my finger on the picture it was so sharp (LOL).

ps. Is anybody using the DRC function?

Anybody out there had this problem before? If so, what did u do to fix it? I know that the ESPN banner isn't orange, but i can't seem to get it reddish even with all the posted settings i've tried. Any suggestions out there or do I have a bad set?
