QUICK QUESTION! Are all 3 HDMI Inputs of the PX80 and 85 on the back of the TV or is there one on the front as well?

The px80u and pz80u have the 3rd HDMI input in the front; the pz85u has the 3rd HDMI input on the side.

I'm running it in "Light". The image with the cheetah sitting next to the zebra at sunrise really is impressive. You can actually see the detail in the cheetah's fur without the whites in the sky getting blown out.

It depends on the material being viewed, there are instances where "Dark" helps without losing detail. I guess it depends on the feed. If memory serves me correctly, I had good results with some basketball games last night, Nets vs. Cavs using "Dark".

I haven't been able to tell the difference with Video and MPEG Noise Reductions filters on or off, so I leave them off so that I'm not applying any unnecessary processing to the image.

Thanks for the feed back. I take it that you find the black level with "Light" setting to be more that satisfactory to you.

What about the Floating black levels(Fluctuations) that bothered some people in previous generations of Panasonic panels? Do you see much or any improvement in that area? Thanks.

Zaxx92 is there any signs of retention with your screen? Seeing that it was evident in the PX80 to a minor degree.

er? I'm asking, because both the new samsung LCD and the Viera 85u is comparably priced, which is more worthwhile as far as playing games go?

Nope, haven't noticed anything, but quiet frankly, I've been more focused on setting the correct black level and the details in the shadows. If anything, I'm bothered by what appears to be posterization or noise that I've noticed in very few instances.

It's not as if that setting actually changes the black levels. Setting it to dark absolutely destroys shadow detail, or atleast it has for the last 2 generations. I've played around with test patterns on my 60u and what should be nice gradations become completely solid with black level set to dark. I guess with the floating blacks of the 6/7 series then more solid black on the screen = a slightly darker shade of black but at the expense of any decent picture. Of course we don't know enough about the 8 series to know whether it even has floating blacks or what the black level control does.

Gaming on plasmas is far better in my opinion. No input lag, no blur, amazing picture. I've gamed lots on Panasonic's 6 series and 7 series displays and they've been excellent. I expect these 8 series sets to be even better. Also the 46" 85u should be quite a bit cheaper than the 46" a650. This is the owners thread, though, and probably not the place for questions like this. Look in the other non-owner Panasonic and Samsung threads.

I was very unhappy when I learned that Panasonic removed native 24fps from the PZ85Z series, in contradiction with their original press release. But if there really is NO judder at all, then I'm really happy. But how could it be possible without 2:2 (or 3:3 or 4:4) pulldown ??

I'll look for it in the movie credits. I was more concerned about seeing it in slow-pans on film based content. I did not see it there.

Yes. When I am within 7 ft of a 46pz85 watching the credits on Spiderman 3 in Blu-Ray I can definitely see judder. Honestly, its the first time I have ever noticed the effect.

As for the warranty, if it is bought from an authorized company you can get an extended warranty from anybody. As for if you need it, it really depends on personal preference. Weight the pros and cons and you will find your answer.

[quote=rimrattler6;13369391]hi all,

long time viewer, first time poster. JUST ordered the PZ85U last night and it says ships early-april. I know a bunch of people have gotten it earlier, but just wondering if anyone has ordered within the past 24-48 hours gotten a confirmation that it will be shipped earlier?

Thanks!![/QUOTEI

I ordered mine yesterday and they called the number I left them (my cell) with the conformation info today and that my pz85u will be delivered on 3-20 between 1 and 5. I think I will take next friday off.

I am worried I won't want to watch my 61" dlp any more. That is what I watch all my movies on.

I play games on last gens th42pz700u and I'm very happy with it. 360 & Wii look great...The only image retention I've ever had is the white & hearts from Zelda on the wii.

I did about 150 hours of brightness all the way down to zero. I'm not sure how much it helped but I'm very happy with all games, Gears of War, Halo 3, Mass Effect, Mario Galaxy, et al.

wait, higgins, so you had imag retention? What do yo mean reducing 150 hours of brightness down to 0?

I'm also concerned about the power consumption. On the official site, it says it's taking 650W.

That's huge compared to the 350W from LCD. I saw a cnet comparison, and that's a $100 price different a month.

The manual is available online but I'll save people the trouble. FYI, this is on page 53 of the manual.

TH42PZ85U
MAXIMUM Power Consumption=573W
Standby Consumption=0.2W

TH46PZ85U
MAXIMUM Power Consumption=628W
Standby Consumption=0.2W

TH50PZ85U
MAXIMUM Power Consumption=690W
Standby Consumption=0.2W

Note, that's maximum draw, not average.

My set is showing between 1 and 3 amps draw depending on the brightness of the image on the screen. Let's average that out to 2 amps draw. 2 amp x 120 volts = 240 watts

Please try the search function. There's already a ton of info about gaming on plasmas and other generic topics like warranties posted to this forum. I'd hate for this thread to stray off topic. Thanks.

anyone have any Canadian info on the PZ85s (availability/pricing)? I know sometimes futureshop carries an exclusive series, so it may be the PZ85s. I'm going to email a few retailers to find out!

I just ordered the z85 from Amazon and got a March 31st-April 14th ship date. Has anyone bought from Amazon and had to wait that long?

I have a rule to never get an extended warranty on anything. I may someday have trouble but I'm sure the one time I get burned, I can use the money that I didn't pay for all the extended warranties and still come out on top. No issues with folks who have them but I just don't get them. That's just how I roll . . .

You're supposed to break a plasma in for the first 100 hours. Basically, don't have the brightness up all the way. I turned it down to 0 since that was dark but still watchable for me.

The retention I had goes away after 20 seconds or so of discovery HD in full screen. And that was after about ten hours straight of zelda...

So now when I game, I finish my session by putting on discovery HD for about a minute then power everything off. I've only ever seen it a time or two.

I don't think there are any PZ80's released yet to compare to.
