These are very sad times for us videophiles. OLED is at a standstill and plasma is gone.

The Samsung PN51F8500 can be had for 999 on Amazon or Best Buy. Not a bad deal, but being a spoiled Kuro owner, I'll be disgusted by the .002 black level (.004 if using correct film cadence according to CNET).

If only someone would discover service menu black level tweaks for the VT/ZT60 and/or F8500.

The cinema smooth bug has been fixed and Zoyd has tweaks for the F8500 blacks.

Pioneer Kuro Elite Pro-111FD
Pioneer Kuro BDP-320
Displays are like 100% cotton t-shirts. Always buy a size larger than you think you'll need, as they tend to shrink over time.

So the F8500 is now able to maintain .002 black level with cinema smooth enabled? Was this fix via a firmware update?

How low can the black level go with Zoyd's tweaks?

I recently purchased a new Samsung 51" F8500 (although it hasn't arrived yet). I am in no rush to buy a TV although had wanted to get my hands on a plasma before they stopped being manufactured. Was wondering if it may be worth returning/selling and waiting for a Pioneer to pop up on Craigslist for a good deal and purchase over the F8500. Are the Kuro's worth getting over the F8500? And also which of the Kuro's have the 9.5G tech, or how can you tell the difference between them?

Are the Kuros better? Yes. Are they so much better that would make entice me to buy an almost 7 year old display over new? No.

In no hurry? Good thing you bought an F8500 because supplied are all but dried up.

I own a 101FD and just purchased a 64F8500.
If your 51 is anything like my 64, you will be very happy with it.
Having a KURO to compare it to side by side I can see deeper blacks on the KURO but better dark scene definition on the Samsung.
Watching sports (Hokey/Nascar for sure) look better on the Samsung.
The Samsung performs better in a bright room.
The Samsung has 3D and SmartTV features as well which are just icing on the cake.

So, enjoy your brand new plasma and don't obsess over finding a used KURO.
[Unless you find a dead pixel or it buzzes too loud. In that case return it ASAP]

You already have the F8500 so keep it. Unless you want a bigger size? Still, since you already bought it just trade it for the 64". If you were still choosing then that's a different story. Actually no.........Any kuro you buy now is going to have thousands of hours of use and probably other issues. You wouldn't see the true potential of it anyway sadly. If you can find a kuro with under 3000 hours, no red tint, and was taken care of properly, then i would definitely get that over anything else. imo anyway. These new displays don't really have anything over the kuro as far as pure PQ goes. That's just how i feel. I make no apologies for that.

Regardless, you have one of the last best plasmas.

I can get a Pioneer 6020 for $800. Is this a good deal and anything I should be checking for?

You need to check how much hours are on it and if it has the red tint. A kuro for $800 to means there's something wrong with it. I'm betting the hours are really high. A perfectly working kuro with low hours wouldn't go that price i think. I know if i were to sell my 151 (not gonna happen) in the state it's in now i would ask for over $2000. $1800 with negotiating.

How do you turn off the picture on the display while it's still playing? I forgot how to do it. I went to the setup and options menu but i see anything about it there.

So I dreaded the day my Elite Kuro would start to show signs of aging, but that day has finally come. Today I noticed a 2 pixel wide vertical line in the bottom left of the screen. It's barely noticeable during dark scenes but pretty visible during more colorful scenes. It also changes color depending on the background. Here's a couple pics showing the line. Is my Kuro dying? Would repair be an option? What sort of cost am I looking at? I really have no desire to go new TV shopping, I love my Kuro too much

I won't pretend to be an expert on these issues, but I believe another common issue could be on of the drive boards. If you are inclined you could take apart the back and reseat cables and see if you have any other responses for which board may be broken.

Damn. Would taking it to an authorized Pioneer repair location be a waste? The line is barely noticeable from a distance so I can live with it for now. Are more lines going to start appearing?

I had the exact same issue with my 101 , D-Nice told me it was not repairable, Pioneer took one look at it and sent me a new display , thank goodness it was under warranty
