Hi...

I'm not a frequent poster and I'm scared most experts get annoyed at "which is the best" posts, but after about two hours of searching and reading (and royally overwhelmed) I figure it would be best to just ask.

I'm ready to upgrade my old Panasonic TH-42PHW5 bought in 2002 for $5300. It's still working perfect -- but it is now looking rather small.

I'm picky. I want something really great. Plasma. In the 60"-70" range. I'm willing to spend $5-6K again. I also want to work with the dealer to assure I'm not dissatisfied with any bad pixels (i.e. I can't see any from 8'). My purchase timeframe is now to 6-months.

Which makes and models do you recommend I research further and look at? (Including soon to be released models.)

Thanks in advance for your advice. I'll contribute back with what I choose and why.
Erik

Here is a starting block...

Panasonic 65PF10UK
Pioneer 6020FD
Samsung 63A650
LG 60PG60
Panasonic 65PZ850U (this should be your choice when it is available this fall)

I know this the wrong forum....but the Sharp LC 65D64U can be throw in for size.

BitJumper,

I have, I guess, the 2007 model of the 63-inch Samsung 1080p set, the FP-T6374. I guess there's a new one out or about to be out in the fall.

Anyway, I'd agree with others in this thread. Samsung, Panasonic, and Pioneer are all quality displays.

When I was shopping around, I went to a few local shops and checked them all out. Really, the store is probably the worst place to go because the material they show is always garbage and getting to really play with the settings can be troubling.

But equally so, relying on forum chatter can be equally frustrating. If you follow AVS heavily, you'd be left with the impression that Pioneer is the only choice and everything else is substandard flotsam. Nothing could be farther from the truth, of course. Panasonic and Samsung would not be in business and have such high market share if they produced terrible displays.

I think that if you stay with any of the "majors" above, you'll be able to find plasma bliss. I'd be hesitant to put LG in as a major (even though I know they manufacture a dearth of displays) because they always seem to be more "cost conscious" in their products and Sharp always seems to be overpriced and obscure (difficult to find and thus difficult to service if needed).

Regardless, they will all produce amazing pictures with a bit of finesse!

Good luck!

Robert

The Panasonic TH-65PZ750U is out and current. Probably the best bang for the buck right now. With that being said the lowest price flat panel right now is The Sharp LC-65D64U, they are giving them away.

Panasonic 65PZ800U will also be a viable choice. That one will be most comparable to the PG60 in that both are THX certified, if that has any bearing on your decision. The 850 has more tweakable settings than the 800u, but less than the PG60.

PQ...regardless of which you choose, I cannot overstate the importance of seeing them next to each other. Eyeballs are organic and unique...you need to decide what looks best for you. You'll also need to build up a rapport with a sales person if you are going to want them to help you with bad pixels that annoy you but are within the "allowable" range before being considered a panel defect.

If you are in the SE, feel free to PM me and I can share my recent purchase experience and provide a refrence...for which I get nada..btw ;-)

This list but with a Pioneer 141 or 151 on top and no LCD.

I would say just get the pioneer pro-151 or 141. Pretty much guaranteed to be the best display of 2008, although of course it is the most expensive. But at 60 inches, quality is pretty important.

my list would be:

1. pioneer Pro 151/141
2. pioneer 6020
3. panny 65pz850 when it comes out (just under the 6020 because it likely will be slightly below in PQ but a bit bigger)
4. LG 60PG60 (has gotten pretty good reviews and the blacks are apparently panny-level on the 60 inch version, meaning second best of any flat panel. plus the design looks really nice)
5. Samsung 63A650
6. Panasonic 65PF11UK - only if you like the pro series and don't mind a bit less simultaneous connectivity

Is there some confirmation that they will produce a 65" 800U series plasma? They didn't do it last year (700U) and I would actually prefer the 800U in that size, but can't find where such a TV is referenced.

HD DVD, I hardly knew you....

The disc toll:
Blu: 85
Red: 107

Yeah I thought the initial press releases suggested the PZ800 would top out at 58" and the 850 would be the only 65"..? But I admit I'm not sure about that.

I'd vote 65PF11UK when it comes out later this year, depending on whether the OP needs the speakers and stand or not.

Currently the best PDP on the market is the Pioneer PRO-151FD, which has an MSRP of $6,500. The street price by this fall/winter should be considerably below that.

Being an experienced PDP owner it is doubtful you will be happy with some nickel & dime upgrade (e.g. Samsung, Panasonic) and I doubt you will be satisfied with the non-Elite series Kuro PDPs.

I have a Panasonic TH-50PX50U and a Pioneer PRO-150FD and at this point will consider no other manufacturer other than Pioneer for a plasma TV.

any of the pioneer line up even the older 8th generation is better PQ out of all brands, that doesnt mean other brands suck but if you want top notch PQ get a pioneer.

if you like playing with the settings and picture adjustments get the elite version or if you like just to set it with D-nice settings and forget it then get the 6020.

then theirs also the moniter only series with ip functions ...

if i had money to blow once in a great while i would get this orderd

141
PRO-151
6020

in the 60"

good luck

Pioneer Elite PRO-111
Samsung 60PnF5300 af
panasonic px75u

+1 but I would add Pioneer 6010 to the list (or in lieu of the 6020), there are still a few of them out there and IMHO I like the 8th gen non-elites better than the 9th gen ones due to more extensive user controls.

^^^^

really? i thought all 8g were out. in that case then add the 8th generation family.

even though the 8g non elite have more functions then the 9g non elite, D-nice thought his 6020 was better then his 8g ELITE 1150.

i think he saw that pioneer nailed it on the head with the 9g non elite for those "set it and forget it" people that dont play with settings much
