I know this is a 58PZ800U thread, but since we're talking about the lack of a stand on the 58", I wondered if that carried over to the 50". Does the 50PZ800U come with a pedestal stand?

Sorry for the confusuion there guys I was answering a question for someone on a different model, the base stand is not included on the TH-65PZ850U. The base stand is included on the TH-58PZ800U and TH-58PZ850U. The base stand is included on the TH-50PZ800U and TH-50PZ850U.

It looks like you have this unit in a very bright room. Does that create any problems with daytime viewing? I really want a plasma unit, but am very afraid because my main viewing area is fairly light.

This seems accurate as we just received our first shipment of 58PZ800's today.

BB has stock (44) in warehouse close by. Video guy said next Tuesday they will get a shipment. I'm down to 2, the 6020 or the 58PZ800. I'm ready.
FYI, this is in Bay Area California.

Just wondering why you chose Dan over Chris, or Roman, or any of the other sponsors. Did it just feel right, or was it price? I am very close on making a decision too.

Good luck on your purchase.

Well I got my first look at the TH-58PZ800U yesterday. A local store just got it in. One word, FANTASTIC, I spent a half hour comparing it to the TH-50PZ800U (just as good) and the TH-58PZ700U (the TH-58PZ800U is much sharper than the TH-58PZ700U).

One Very interesting note, the store had it set to Vivid so I asked them to switch it to THX, MUCH Darker, more so than the TH-50PZ800U, I think the only way I would want to watch it is set to the brighter Vivid mode, does anyone think this will cause burn-in over time?

Now, if I'm going to always watch it in Vivid mode, I may as well just get the TH-58PZ850U and have the added benefit of the Pro Setting and VieraCast, decisions, decisions, anyone have any comments on the tradeoffs?

Thanks for the info. Looking forward to hearing other's reactions on the TH-58PZ800U.

So are you saying the THX on to 58 is darker than the THX on the 50?

I bet the THX would look just fine in your home. Perhaps it looks darker in the store environment compared to the other tvs on torch.

I suppose you could watch the TV on vivid during the day and then THX at night.

If things go as planned, I will be receiving my 58PZ800U on Tues. I'll let you know if it's really "dark" in THX mode. When you are in the store and all the TVs are totally cranked up bright, anything that isn't cranked looks dark. Did you try and adjust the contrast (picture) or brightness? Did you set the Black level to Light? There are adjustments you can make to brighten up THX mode. Most stores wouldn't let me play with the TV because they were afraid of your reaction. Oh...doesn't look so good now, need to rethink this.

I'm sure that IR will be more of a problem with the TV set to Vivid mode than to THX mode. The harder you drive it, the more likely you should be to have some IR issues. I've looked at many plasmas in stores that are cranked up and really haven't seen any IR issues, so I think the whole issue is overblown a bit. I'm sure it happens at times, but it's a rarity.

After putting the Kuros aside due to the price of entry, I looked closely at the 850U, too, and I decided that THX mode did pretty much everything I needed. Set it and forget it. If I can't dial it in on my own, then it's calibration time. I've had other TVs calibrated and have never regretted paying for it. Hopefully that could be an option for you.

I have very little AV knowledge

question on the 58PZ800U
how many cables do I need to buy?
I will have a DVR, cable box, AV receiver for my surround system, DVD player (not Blu-ray)
they will all be situated on the stand below the TV (not wall mounted)
I assume 6' length will be plenty
is the 1.3a category 2 the version I need?
I thought I saw a hookup post somewhere but can't locate it, if you have a link I would appreciate it

thanks

Are you using your A/V reciever to switch from cable to dvd? If so you will need 3, if not you will only need 2. I would go with the HDMI 1.3a, they are just a little more in cost.

Chris, I use the AV receiver to use the 5.1 system with DVD's. Don't really use it with normal cable TV watching, mainly because nothing comes in with 5.1 (?). I don't have any premium movie channels at the moment. Dropped them all a few years back.

If you are getting HDTV from your cable box, then you are getting plenty of stuff with DD 5.1 soundtracks. Sports, some networks shows (e.g., LOST), etc. all use DD 5.1 at times. Football is great with surround sound active. It's not just movie channels that use DD 5.1.

That is good to know. I had digital cable but just getting the HDTV cable later this week, the Panny should be in this week as well. I usually kept the surround system off except for DVD's.

What's the difference between the 'PZ800U model and the 'PZ850U? Also, does the base all for swiveling?

-800U has 24P playback. THX mode.

-850U adds Studio Ref Mode. Pro Settings. RS232C input. VieraCast (Internet) and takes away THX mode.

850U can be out as early as next week, we will see...... Stands do not swivel on either unit

Well I went back to the store today and asked then to reset both the TH-58PZ800U and TH-50PZ800U to the factory defaults, then I compared both in THX mode and they were equal, not dark, I'm happy to report. Thanks for the tips.

I took my wife with me and she decided on the 58" over the 50" (oh darn) we both agreed that on the 50" when the shows went to some commercials or letterbox mode the picture was no larger than our 32" CRT, so the 58" it is.

Now I will wait for TH-58PZ850U to see how it compares to the TH-58PZ800U. I'll then crank up the brightness on the 800U in THX mode and compare it to the Pro mode on the 850U to see how the colors compare.

After reading the shootout results here in this forum, I am a little concerned that many people found the 800U washed out.

I have not had the opportunity to compare the Samsung with the 800U so I have hope that this may find a reasonable answer here.

I wish someone would review the new panny 58 with lots of pics! I am almost ready to pull the trigger or should I say I almost have my wife talked into letting me pull the trigger. This is supposed to be for Christmas but football season is upon us. Patience, I need patience.

I have seen Panasonic VS Samsung side by side and it is a close race, however I feel the Panasonic has an edge of about 10% overall better unit in my eyes.
