If you have the space for it, think outside the 50-inch box...

For $2K, I'd be looking at the 58" Panasonic TH-58PH10UK. It's a monitor (no speakers) and 768p, but don't let that stop you.

Another worthy contender in that price range is the LG60PC1D at 60 inches.

For a few bucks more, Samsung has a 1080i model, PN58A550, 58-incher that's coming down near that price range these days.

You could probably get a 5020fd with 250-450 dollars more if you wanna see what all the hypes is about on the Kuros.

there is a powerbuy on the LG 50pg60 above which will save you money. Also you can get a 5010FD Pioneer still some units left as well for your budget

You don't have to go the LCD route if you don't have 3k. You can get the 5020FD under 2.5k if you shop around. I remember seeing a 6020FD for under 3k (opened box), but probably will be over 3k including shipping.

Well, most of the displays end up feeding "p" to the panel. I was speaking in broadcast lingo, where "i" is the only game now.

Go to a Magnolia room (Best Buy) and check these out for yourself. I personally can't make the connection between "Pioneer" and "budget." I'd rather have a 58" or larger than ANY 50-inch, Kuro or otherwise.

Just don't let your wife (which I'm presuming you have, since you used the "B" word) see any of these displays next to the Panasonic PX80U. She'll say, "What's wrong with this one for a grand?" (thinking: "Gee, that extra $1K will buy a lot of shoes!")

It all depends on what screen size your looking at. 50" is generally a good size these days and for $2000, I'd really look at the Panasonic TH-50PZ800u!!! If you want Internet features, there's the TH-50PZ850u also for a couple hundred more.

If he can get the 5010 for that amount, that would be a good choice.

The Pioneer crowd reminds me of an exchange I heard yesterday on local sports talk radio...

LISTENER: I love the Lakers. But, sheez, it costs me $300 to go see a game with my kids. I just can't afford it -- what can I do?

TALK JOCK: "Get a better job."

Well it depends on how you look at it. If he can swing his budget greater than $500 the 58PZ800 is a solid choice. However, under $2k the 50PZ800 is the most logical choice.

Man i cant belive some of you are saying to get the 58" panasonic, thats a Size / price over Picture Quality.

size vs Picture Quality is a bad choice, i would rather have the best picture at 50" then a 58" that is less but normal picture.

Picture Quality then size man!

Pioneer then panasonic

That's your opinion, thanks for contributing. Most disagree, and I would hardly call the 800u "normal picture".

I'll bet if you put the 58" Panny sets next to the 50" Pioneer sets, 90% of the men would pick the Panny, and 90% of the women would pick the Pioneer. For reasons having nothing to do with "black levels."

If I lived out in the middle of nowhere with plenty of space ("Vermont woods"?), I might consider a projector system with an eye towards a summer outdoors "drive-in movie" setup.
