Im on the market for a new HDTV, and after countless articles and forum threads, I think I have finally decided to get a Pioneer plasma. To be honest I wasnt even thinking about getting a plasma when I first looked because I heard all the horror stories about burn in and image retention. However, after some research I found that this is largely a thing of the past (let me know if this isnt true, lol)

Well anyways I seem to be stuck between the two 50 inch models, the KRP-500M and PRO 111FD. Besides the obvious diffrences in build, are there any differences in picture quality? is one supposed to be "better" than the other? It should be noted that I dont really care about slimness since I dont plan on mounting it.

2 things that I also would like to know about plasmas. First, why the heck is the 60 inch elite $2 grand more? I understand if it was $1k more, but I refuse to pay an extra $2k for 10 inches. Anybody know if I could get the 60 inch around $4k? Also, some readers mentioned a "break in" DVD where the picture is white or whatever. Does this DVD come with the plasmas or do I have to hunt that down?

Thanks!

You could find a 60" non-elite for less than 4k, but not an Elite (at least not that I am aware of).

As far as the KRP-500M vs the PRO-111FD, that should be an easy call. What country do you live in?

I'm interested in this, too. It seems that Pioneer updated the 500M to achieve noticeably deeper blacks. Is the 111-FD any better at video processing or anything like that? The 500M seems to be in my price range, but poor video processing could ruin it for me, or if it's just not on par with the 111-FD. Anyone want to comment? How would I know if I'm buying an updated 500M or the old 500M?

It seems like Pioneer will never be bested

Pioneer had never updated the 500M. The deeper blacks had always been a part of the 500M, right from the very beginning since they were first shipped.

I've heard in a few posts on this forum that shipments from the end of the year and the beginning of this year have noticeably better black levels than when the 500M was released.

It seems like Pioneer will never be bested

I could have sworn D-nice said something to the effect that ALL the 500Ms had some of the 10g tech in them.

lol...sure did take a while to make said discovery. If you want the peace of mind of buying locally, stick with the 111FD.

that 10" is 44% more screen. the $$ differences have been discussed many times here on avs.

you could get the 600M 60" for under $3000 delivered.

No, a breakin dvd does not come with any plasma. you can download it to thumbdrive or burn it yourself or order it by mail for $6.50 at

Does anyone know what the actual difference is between the two models besides the price, and tv tuner/stand? Why would anyone buy a Pro-111fd for twice as much???

Because if you care about the absolute best picture quality, the 111 has the ISFccc option built in.

Personally,I would buy a 500m before any 50 inch kuro right now.
but thats just me.
If a Pro-111fd, Pro-101fd, 5020fd, and a 10G kuro were cross breeded,
thier baby would be the 500M. lol.

You're right. If I understand correctly, the 500M's ISFccc patch is purchased seperately.

Edit: I'm not explaining it right.

The 500M has the benefit of a better Panel as well (as does the 101FD).

Either would be an excellent choice though.

With the release of turbe's ISF patch for the 500/600M monitors, it would be really difficult to recommend a 111 over a 500 right now.

The M will give you a better picture, it just boils down to whether or not you already have an existing external audio/video source to couple it with. Or whether you would be willing to purchase those in addition to the monitor.

Do you think I would even need the patch if all I was doing is gaming? (I would have it in game mode whatever that does differently lol) Since all the patch does is just provide another mode for the tv other than for example PURE SPORTS or GAME right?

All *I* do is gaming, too.

The patch opens up the ISFccc modes which gives the KRPs the potential to output picture quality noticeably superior to Pure mode.

My plan in the future is to hire a professional who could install the patch and calibrate my display, so that I could get the absolute best picture quality that my KRP-500M can output.

I see no problem with going for a 111FD if you can find it for $2500 or less. The slight difference in PQ wouldn't be noticeable unless you put both models side-by-side in a light-controlled environment. Secondly, if you need a stand or a QAM/ATSC tuner on-board, you'll have to purchase them separately (the same goes for speakers).

Anyone know what the price difference would be for adding the Pioneer stand and speakers to the 500M? I guess I'm wondering if it's a wash at that point.

Isn't the only reason to purchase a 500M over the 101FD is price, right? Both use the same panel, and the 101FD has more inputs.

The 101 offers a better warranty, as well.

PQ wise, they should be identical.

My credit card doubles the standard warranty, but only if the original warranty is 1 year or less. So I'd get 2 years either way. Check your CC policy it may offer similar protection.

I think the addition of a tuner, stand, and speakers makes the 111FD the better option here.

Though having only owned the 111FD, I can't offer any opinions about the difference in picture between it and the 500M.

Also keep in mind that unlocking the ISFccc modes on the 101 is completely warranty-friendly. Doing so on the 500M could potentially present an issue.
