Hi Guys

I just bought the PDP5010FD from sams club auctions. I have 48 hours to keep it, or cancel it. Can you tell me if this is a good deal? I know its the older Kuro, not the 5020, so it has no internet, and less deep blacks.

Alternatively, i am considering the 60 inch pioneer purvision 768p set which could be had for similar price if you wait for it.

thanks for your help!

The 5010 is the 1080p version of my 5080 and I love my 5080. Great blacks, tons of color tweaks. Now you can get the 5020 from a forum sponsor for a few more dollars. As far as the 6070. Well depends how far you will be sitting from it but thats a big set to have only 720p. Price wise amazing but theres a certain size after 50 where not having 1080p will or may affect your viewing habbits. Go ask in the pioneer 7 and 8g owners thread. Also try to modify your post so it doesnt show pricing. MSRP is ok just not sale prices. Contact sponsors up above and you might flip at ther prices that they can offer you on last years technology.

As an owner of a 5070 and a 5080,
I would take the Deeper Blacks and the Higher Resolution of the 5010 over the extra size,
drop in resolution and drop in Black level performance on the 6070.

I looked at a 6070 in person on clearance at heavy discounted price last year, and even the 5080 beat it by a long shot.

The pixels are quite a bit larger on a 60" (6070) at 768
than they are on a 50" (5010/5020) at 1080 ...but in the end its the Blacks that sold me on the Kuro.

The 5070/6070 are NOT Kuro's

The 5010FD is a great plasma tv. The newer 5020FD only has incremental changes. For that price I would keep the 5010FD without hesitation.

It has all the good stuff, including the 72Hz feature.

I joined that "membership store" so I could also bid on the Pioneer Kuro model above. I've been researching LCD's/Plasmas/DLP's for about 6 months now, waiting for my Sony trintron to die, it's very close to last rights! I saw your post, and took the plunge, sight unseen, for $19 less than you paid! All the reviews seem favorable and at that price I certainly won't complain! Thanks for the post, can't wait to get it! Will any wall mount work on this tv?

Arrives tomorrow before I go to work. How long to install the stand and speaker?

How do check for bad pixels? Can I do that before the delivery folks leave?

the stand is attached on the 50" models.

you should get the delivery guys to stay at least long enough to check the screen for cracks (a good flashlight will do) if no visible cracks then plug it in to check that it powers on so you know it's not doa if they do that give em a tip and let them get on with their workday.

to check for stuck/dead pixels, use a full color screen source like on the breakin dvd. once you get it unpacked and find the screws the speaker should bolt on pretty easy too. congrats, good luck and enjoy.

When this TV came out, I wanted it so badly. The 1080p version of the PDP-5080HD. I was hoping the 5020FD would be the ULTIMATE TV, but unfortunately the inaccurate colors changed my mind on that. So, the 5020 has amazing black levels and inaccurate color, and the 5010 has great color accuracy and very good black level (but not as good as the 5020).

Very, very tough choice. Some people think the 5020 colors can be fixed by a proper calibration, but who knows. You probably wouldn't notice anyway. I'd say either TV will be amazing.

edit: Oh, you already got it. ENJOY! It's a great TV.

The 5020 has as good or better colors than a 5010.

Any 8G/9G Pioneer PDP will produce deeper blacks and provide better contrast than what Panasonic or Samsung has to offer.

I'd rather own a 50" 1080p display versus a 60" 768p native resolution PDP.

Unpacked and plugged in. Straight outta the box, WOW! Excellent picture! I am having an issue with the one and only authorized repairman not travelling 10 miles outside his county for house calls though. Pioneer is working with them, more as that progresses.

Is anyone having tuner issues? I searched my outdoor antenna on ANT-A and found only 2 digital and one analog channel. I am about 38 miles from the transmitters, and yes, all channels are pretty much co-located. The outdoor antenna has been (and still is) rated at 60 miles and has a signal booster (TRUSPEC-25).

-The antenna was hooked directly into ANT-A
- Previously a D/A converter was used on an old SONY to capture the HD signals, no problems! I got all (and then some) HD channels in the area, but at 480i!
- I've reconnected the D/A box and get all the channels, but not in HD quality....
- The firmware version was checked via phone on today (3/17) and is current

I didn't see a setup disk anywhere in the 5010 box????

That would be because there is no such thing as a setup disk.

If you mean the "break in" disk that is mentioned in many places here in the forums. You must D/L the files for it and burn one for yourself, that is not something that is made by, or provided by Pioneer with their sets.

This is because the manufacturers who produce PDPs do not recommend using one. During the break in period avoid using torch mode picture settings, black bars and watch full screen content. You will see the image rendered by your display improve after approximately 300 - 400 hours of operation once the phosphors have worn in some.

Google the Internet, you won't see any major HDTV web-site advocate using the break in DVD or thumb drive images. This procedure is geared towards those who are too impatient to break in their PDP the way the manufacturer intends. Also, many of the individuals who use the break in DVD do not intend to keep their displays more than a couple of years. I know I won't be buying another $7750 PRO-150FD anytime soon so I'm not going to risk abusing my panel by raising the contrast level to torch mode or run it for 100s of hours at a time while unattended.

Read and follow the instructions in your owner's manual. IMO the manufacturer knows best how to maintain its products versus some anonymous guy or gal we met in an Internet chat forum.

To the OP, I would not hesitate to recommend the 5010 to anyone. I've got a 5010 and a 151fd (the current 60" Elite model). Obviously, the blacks are better on the 151, as is the TV as a whole. However, if I were to go with a non-Elite model, I would go with the xx10 models over the xx20 as they allow better tweakability and calibration. I have all my displays ISF calibrated, and the picture that the 5010 produces is very, very close to the 151.

Wait, you are some anonymous guy or gal we met in an Internet chat forum. Why should we listen to you? Then again what makes an expert? A lawyer that prints up an instruction booklet so as to cover the manufacturer in such a way , an individual that works and calibrates TV's for a living for many many years or a best buy employee that spends most of his time walking past TV's. The answer is it doesn't matter. It's a TV. If plugging it in and not being able to use it in a certain way, well then I don't want to own it. I use full screen, no black bars, no extreme brightness/contrast or other picture settings! Matter of fact I'm using it set up exactly as it came out of the box last Friday! I'm not impatient and have no plans of replacing it anytime soon if ever! Which poses a question, is the estimated lifespan of the 5010 60,000 or 100,000 hours?

I was only able to pick up 2 digital and one analog signal on ANT-A. Firmware version is current per Pioneer engineer. Sadly I've resorted back to using my digital/analog converter box at 480i....but at least I'm getting the channels! The not exactly local service/repairman is working the issue..

The 5010 has a CableCARD slot, which the 5020 doesn't, if that's important to anyone. (It is to me.)

Do you see the "builds a better box" beneath my user id? I wouldn't say it unless it was true.

I'm not sure what all that up above is supposed to mean!

Back on topic, I was thinking about going for this, but then I remembered the 10.25% sales tax I'd have to pay for being in Chicago. It really makes buying from out-of-state (from a company without an in-state presence) a necessity for high-buck purchases.

Does Sam's Club Auctions charge a lot for shipping?

Our local Sams has the 6010 for about 1500.00 less than what I have seen the 151 going for. I have been wandering the same thing is this a good deal.

No offense but I am a Mac guy. Your tables are gibberish to me, what's your point? Anyways, you posted why listen to some guy on the internet, YOU ARE THAT GUY, we all are so who cares get over it. Manuals are like I stated, written by lawyers for big corporate companies. Just like my shotgun manual states don't point the gun at anyone. Duh, but if it didn't say that and I accidently pointed it and shot someone I bet I could sue.

I would say yes yes and yes go grab the 6010 just depends what the actual price is. If it's only 1500 off MSRP of the 6020 then no but if it's 1500 off of what sponsors charge for 6020 then yes.

Right, I am that guy who keeps reminding AVSF members to read and follow the instructions in their owner's manual; but what do I, Pioneer or Panasonic know?

Correct, and this is because too many individuals refuse to follow the instructions in their owner's manual or use a little common sense to manage their viewing habits with so they wind up ruining their PDPs.
