Hey PrimeTime,

Very interesting comments on Store vs. Home mode during setup. Sounds like it would make sense to go with the store mode every time, which I assume would include all the adjustment range of home mode plus some extra brightness and power if/when one needed to call upon it. Does that make sense?

After reading this entire thread as well as many articles and reviews I just picked up the Panasonic plasma that Walmart carries (TH-M50HD18) because I prefer the flat black/grey finish of the bezel rather than the distracting shiny frame. And I understand this is basically the same as the px80, minus an HDMI front connector.

Also, the display at Walmart appeared brighter than the X1 which I have seen in a couple of BBs (I had each one in Vivid mode). I hope your concerns about the new plasmas (brightness and power) turn out to be non-issues, but they do make some sense and sadly I think I have observed the same.

Hey Joe,
I also noticed the dimness of the x1 at the stores compared to the others but once in my home It is plenty bright for myself. I have it set on standard with 80 contrast and 50 brightness right now. It can go allot brighter on vivid. I am no expert on this, it is just my 2 cents I am very happy with my purchase! D-Nice is the expert here. He has break in info and setting info.

Just got my tc-p50x1 yesterday. I notice loss of sound every now and then for just a second or two, and the picture is fine when it happens. Anyone else experience this? Could it be a defective hdmi cable? Only have one cable and no other hdmi device to test with.

They are.

I really can't understand all this brightness talk. Once you play with the settings in your HOME it is as bright as you would ever want it to be. The PQ is beautiful.
Then again I don't watch TV in a sun lit room so it may be an issue for those folks?

I have not had any sound issues while playing with this yet. What was the source at the time of the sound loss?

I have my tv hooked up to multiple sources and have had no issues.

HeadRush, source was Comcast HD box connected via HDMI. Didn't experience any problems with this box and the previous tv, but was using component video cables with that tv. Thanks.

Hey guys (is there ever a female on these threads?),

I will be setting my Panny up in a very bright, sunlit room (and I won't always want to pull down the shades) so I will want the most brightness possible. A bright plasma display is why I chose to go with a Panny (will not consider lcd because of poor colors during angled viewing). Can anybody concur with PrimeTime's assesment of the store vs. home modes? Thanks!

Try running it via comp cables for a bit and see if it happens.
Maybe a bad HDMI cable or port on TV/Cable box?

Have you switched to a different HDMI port on the TV?

Well, Best Buy brought our 50" Panasonic today, and they promptly had to take it right back. We could get sound but no picture. Tried hooking up via coaxial direct TV and HDMI and hooking an Xbox up over HDMI. Even the menus wouldn't appear, though the TV's power light would turn red when we powered on and we would get sound. I was suspicious that we simply were missing something, but neither we nor the two guys from Best Buy could find a way to get a picture on it. Did anyone else run into this type of problem?

Unfortunately, Best Buy doesn't have any more and the guy told us it would probably be until MID MAY before they could get us another unit (unless they can find one at another Best Buy in the area). We don't want to wait until May, so we may be looking at other Plasma models, such as 50" LG. I guess its time to start reading reviews again...

Thanks very much, for what I can tell with this picture the blacks are pretty good aren't they? Could you please also make a picture in the evening with some night view of a city or something else? In that case it's more of a comparison with the pictures of the G10.

2 things come to mind, First-why are you so locked in to Best Buy only? Second-they could probably get one from another store in your area or you could go on the BB website and have one delivered.

I am really starting to wonder if 720P makes more sense at a 10' viewing distance. I am not just talking about saving money, I mean maybe it is simply the smarter thing to do if you only watch 1080P content about 4% of the time with the rest being native 720P or 1080i. I know you can't see the screen door effect at 10'. Maybe there would be a little more noise I guess. Can't think of any other down sides. And BR movies should still look awesome even at 1080i.

I mean aside from future proofing what reason is there to go 1080P at 10'? Hell for the cost of the X1 I could buy a TV every two years easily.

Gunga Gulunga..... Gunga Kunga Galunga..... On your deathbed you will receive total consciousness. So I got that goin' for me.

Well, Best Buy because it is the only place close to us that has the TV and will deliver it. Dont' want to order online incase something happens just like with this one and we are in a mess to send it back for repairs and I am the only in my household that can do any heavy lifting and I can't manage it by myself.

As far as Best Buy's website goes, for some reason you can't order this model from the website for delivery in my area. Already tried that.

.

The X1 will accept a 1080p signal from Blu-ray, and it will look sharper than if you just sent 1080i from the player. You can also send 1080p from your computer and that will look better than 1080i as well.

So the pics of the grass and city were or were not with his settings?

Was the service menu easy to navigate through?

The pics were with out of the box settings on.

The service menu was kind of tricky. Weird how you have to navigate through it using numbers.

But I found the things I was supposed to change and got the heck out.

I then applied his settings for the custom menu, not the cinema.

And tweeked a tiny bit to my liking.

Thanks for al your pictures! If you look at the blacks on your X1, does it look like (for instance with viewing at 21:9 movie) that the black somehow fades in the bezel or is it really more grey black?

(sorry for my "good" english, I'm Dutch )

Its pretty damn black.

But the two are a little hard to compare because the bezel is very shiney compared to the screen.

Why don't you post some pics then with the new settings so we can see the difference?

Sure why not.
My camera totally sucks so it does this tv no justice!!
First one is the same image of the city from before. Others are dark knight in 1080p (obviously this tv is 720p for the smart guys about to point that out)
and transformers.

Edit: Call me crazy I'm sure everyone will, but right now I'm watching the lakers and I like the default game mode better. So does my wife and kids. :O

For me all I wanted was the 720 P 42".

Getting right down to it, it's just TV for me anyway. I'd be watching DVDs more that TV shows.

I've never paid more than $300 for a TV before and what's being asked today for the Flat Panels is insane.

It costs less, takes less power to run.

I have a Laser printer at home and when it first turns on the ceiling fan lights dim just a bit in the room, so I'm a little sensitive with power consumption.

Sorry for getting on a tangent here, but the average circuit for a room or even rooms in a house is 15 to 20 amps. Typically the constant draw for the circuit breaker should be no more than 40% if it's ratings. If the 50" 1080P draws 395 watts, thats 3 amps, add a receiver and a HTPC add another .75 amps and if there are other lights in the room or in that circuit in other rooms.

Well it doesn't take that much more to approach that .75 to 10 amps.

I'll wait a while for the 42X1 to have a drop in price, hopefully $699, then I'll be interested.

Finally, I've read for any screen 50" and under there is not a noticeable difference between the 720P and 1080P.

Mid-may sounds like an exaggeration or an outright lie by their sales staff. I think one will appear in the next couple weeks, and they are just trying to get you to buy something else that they have abundant stock of right now, perhaps for more $$. Stores always like to sell stuff that they have too much inventory of, while the popular stuff sells itself.

Keeping an eye on the online stock is not a bad option. In your case, the in store purchase includes a delivery option anyway so they are esentially the same. In both cases the set is delivered from the warehouse and all the usual BB policies apply, including refused delivery if its broken and a return policy. The only difference is that you make a payment in store vs. online.

Basically I am saying wait it out for some stock to appear, at least for a couple weeks.

Or ditch BB completely and order from a forum sponsor who has it in stock now.

Thanks for your comment. What I really hate about my bedroom LCD are the grey area's when you watch a 21:9 movie. On your pictures it looks like it's really black black, however on a picture it's also very difficult to really judge .
