I can certainly see the logic in a "you can do this at home" approach.

(But I'm enough of a fiddler that I look forward to entering the forbidden zone when I buy my set, just like I got hooked on overclocking with CPUs and graphics cards. Love squeezing out all the value and quality I can get.)

Yes I have seen it posted that altering SM controls can void a warranty if done by a non-factory tech., if they find out you went in there.

They changed from including SM settings before.. why remove them if they didn't get sued by somebody who fried their set by monkeying around in there?

they position themselves as technical experts... to not have the information would be against their positioning...

Just my $.02, but it seems likely.

It is my understanding that the Panasonics don't offer any control over manual color temperature settings and/or CMS. Does this limitation only apply to the lowest ranking models?

I'm a bit confused, sorry guys. What's the difference of settings in post 1 vs post 2?

Post 1 = during break in period

Post 2 = after break in period

?

Thanks! So the out-of-box settings are actually different from the settings in post 1?

So take out of box. Dial in settings from post 1. Stick in thumb drive and start slideshow. Run that for 120 hours. Dial in settings from post 2.

Is that it? Sounds simple enough Thanks!!

Just goes to show you how different people can take different meaning out of the same words.

Black level: The S1 performed admirably in this area, and if we had to guess (and we do, since we didn't have a direct comparison on hand), it equals or exceeds the black-level performance of the best Panasonic plasmas from last year. Compared with the displays we did have on hand, it couldn't compete with the Kuro, but handily beat the Samsung and compared well with the Sony in terms of delivering a deep shade of black and preserving shadow detail.

Topper is correct he was referring to black levels when he said "it does not compete".

But I do not see his statement as a contradiction according to the english language.

"Nearly rivals" means it does not Rival. It means it comes close to being a rival.
Being a Rival means to be in direct competition with.

therefore, He did not say the panny competes the first time.

So saying "The blacks nearly rival" and "do not compete" is not a contradiction. at least if you are going by the english language.

I have seen David contradict himself many times before but I don't see it here.

But still, from how it sounds, the pannys blacks are very good! And for the price, well worth it.

Store mode resets the picture to vivid every 5 minutes. There is no point using store mode at home.

I using the break-in dvd now, and it seems the center of the screen seems more "white" than the edges. Is this normal or should I be worried?

I just got this TV yesterday, and put about 3 hours of normal viewing before using this break-in dvd.

It's quite possible, as it seems only the more pastel-like colors cause this effect. But I'm not sure...this is my first plasma so I guess I'm over-analyzing everything...

This is precisely why I prefer reviews that actually measure the black level.

Hey whiteboy,

what custom settings are you using... i went through the same you have with dnice's "suggestions" (he's the ****). I bumped the contrast a tad and lowered the brightness a bit also... oh and slightly increased the color (all within a notch or 2). I use normal for temp also. how bout you? I love the TV. MUCH more than my ole a550 LCD

A break-in is a good thing, with plasmas. I put on 50 hours before I researched break-in ideas and made the SVCD. I've put on about 50 more hours using the Evangelo2's SVCD, and Sunday night will put me near 150 total. Then I'm going to hop into the service menu (okay, carefully navigate after my kids are asleep, write down the settings, etc). Yesterday I googled D-Nice's pre-post reports and learned a lot about colors and perception. I'm used to exploring tech things anyways and I feel comfortable now going in and just changing those settings that he indicated, but not touching anything else.

Just waiting....

Yah I did the same, something just wasn't quite right for me. And then I figured it out like I see you did too.

I didnt like the color temp on warm, seemed too green.

I also bumped up the contrast a little bit.

And yes I love this baby I had a 27" crt before so I'm in HD heaven

No I think the black was on high for a certain mode when I got it cause I only saw it once.

After that everytime I cecked I had it on low. Yes high was no good for sure.

Dnice, Really appreciate all the info you have provided. I am considering purchase of X1, not rushing you but do you have a rough idea when your review will be posted? I would like to read before deciding which model to purchase. Again thanks for all your info...Fantastic!

Yah its the s*** dude for real. A lot of these people are not real owners and just bashing it based on numbers or what they saw in the store.

That being said if it looks this good on the entry level set I'd love to see the high end models

I'm with you guys! I have the 50" but only about 40 hours on it. I couldn't be happier with my purchase!

I'm not sure if I feel comfortable with going into the set for changes though. )
