I still don't own a plasma (been researching for a couple of years), so take my recommendation with that caveat, but the Panasonic S1 would be my choice in that price range. You might also be able to find a really good deal on a Panasonic G10 for less than $1,200 if you shop around.

the Panasonic VIERA S1 Series TC-P54S1 54-Inch 1080p is a good one.
