Most people on this site seem to post that they have the "black level" setting setting to "off" rather than "dark", "darker", or "darkest." I'm curious why this is so. Is this because setting the brightness level sufficiently low is better than engaging extra processing to get deep blacks? How do the brightness and "black level" settings differ from one another?

Any guesses would be appreciated.

I believe you lose detail in shadow if you set it to darker

Has anyone verified whether you can activate cinema smooth on the 550 to make it like a 590? Also is the Samsung cinema smooth black level issue still a problem with the C series?

That setting doesn't affect how black the set gets, it just affects the shadow detail above that point (ie low end gamma).

So you can "upgrade" these sets to properly handle 24p?

On Samsung's website they have the C series priced cheaper than B series for the same size TVs. I don't understand why the new series would be cheaper than the old series for the same model numbers.

My new PN58C550 arrived last night, and I eagerly set it up. After turning it on, I was immediately disappointed - it made a high-pitched buzzing sound. It's going back.

I'm really bummed. I bought a B550 a few weeks ago, but returned it because of the buzzing. I had hoped Samsung would have fixed the buzzing issue in this year's models. I guess not...

I do think it's a great value - very good picture quality and impressive features for the price. But I just can't get past the buzzing. Our current 2006 Panasonic plasma does make noise when it's on, but it's more of a "hum" that is easily covered up by the sound of whatever you're watching. The Samsung makes a much higher frequency noise that isn't easily masked.

I entered the service menu and changed from 550 to 590. However, I still don't see a Cinema Smooth option. Will it just apply it automatically anytime 24fps played? Also, I was hoping to get the color management option like what is on my B860, but I don't see any change. Actually, other than all my settings going back to default, I didn't see any change in any of the menus. Help would be appreciated.

Edit: I take that back, I found Film Mode. Now anyone know if the 550 has an option in the service menu to add the color managment option rather just auto & native?

I purchased a 58B860 for my living about a month ago and got spoiled so decided I would also upgrade the bedroom. Since I didn't necessarily need all the interactive features of the 860 I thought I would buy a lesser expensive model. I researched and found the new C550, which can be changed to a 590 adding Cinema Smooth. I assumed it should be same picture quality as the 850/860 since all features and specs look about the same. However, I did notice the contrast ratio to be lower on the 550, but everyone seems to call BS on all the contrast #'s game played by the manufacturers. But other than than that, looks like they have the same tuner, 600HZ, little diff. color enhancer, but overall pretty much the same, from what I can tell. The problem, the C550 looks horrible compared to my B860. The C550 doesn't have the color management feature of the the 860, which I feel I have gotten a real good picture out of thanks to the settings given in this thread and others. Am I missing something? Does the 860 have things I am not realizing causing the picture to be dramatically better than the C550? Thanks for any help!

I feel that way too. I haven't seen much about the C550 compared to the B series which has lots of great reviews. Is there something wrong or drastically changed between the C and B series? Considering its the new series, shouldn't the picture be at par or better than the old series?

My biggest problem is poor color, mostly skin tones, and a lot of grainyness/pixilization with SD & HD tv shows. Since I bought this for the bedroom and most of that viewing will be recorded DVR stuff, I need something better. I'm sure it would look similar to the 860 with a blueray, but that will mostly be viewed in the living room with full HT & larger screen. Nevertheless, I just ordered an 860 to replace the C550. Atleast I know I am getting one of the best Samsung has to offer and anything I don't like the looks of I'll just have to blame it on the programing content.

Mine has the buzz but I'll deal with it for a little while.

I also moved from a 42 inch Hitachi, to this set and I do see more grainyness etc. But this could be due to watching Cable HD content on a much larger screen from the same short distance.

The color, well right now especially during the day I find my myself stuck on the dynamic setting even though I used the recommended setting from that Amazon review on the movie mode.

I went through this with my Hitachi at first, so we'll see what happens.

In addition to Costco now selling both the 50 and the 58 C550, BB sells the 58C550...

As for the C540, Sears and London Drugs sell both of these models...

As for the differences, that is a tough question, they are very similar, don't believe what is written currently on the Samsung USA site about these models, they are in the process of updating the information, there is nothing on the Canadian site.

The 540 series might have one less HDMI port but I have to take a peak at one to be sure, they don't mention AllShare or DLNA for this model but I looked in the menu and it is there. They also don't call the PDP an E3 panel but the do call it an E panel, IMHO just marketing games. Physically if you look at the 2 models they are impossible to tell them apart.

I opted for the PN58C550 from Costco as it was the same price as the C540 at Sears on sale, reasoning was a better return policy at Costco and an included 2 year warranty, that and a measure of "just in case" there is something the C550 has the C540 does not.

This is a tough question, they are very similar and the differences might be only settings controlled buy the "model" as set in the firmware. Read else where in the thread that this can be changed, but as usual: YMMV.

As I have posted above, don't go what is written on the websites about features, a lot of this is pure marketing and has little to do with what the set actually offers, see my comments about DLNA...

The owners manual you receive says on the front C540/C550/C590...

There are a lot of included files types and containers supported, quite a lot!

I tried to add this information but it doesn't translate well from the manual so I suggest that you download the pdf from the Samsung site and look at pages 34-36 for the details.

http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/t...il&tab=support

I have tried a number of them and they work quite well.

I'm also coming from a 42 Hitachi and I felt that it served me well even after all these years. I'm a bit skeptical about this C series because something is just not right. If its the new series from Samsung there should be much more news about it than what is. I'm comparing this series to the LG PK550 and the LG seems to have many good reviews. Chad reviewed and it said that apart from glare, which I don't care about as I'm putting it in a room with no light, the LG performs even better than the Samsungs and Panny G10. So I'm not sure yet. Hopefully more news comes out about this series.

Wow! I looked at the C550 thread and there is a lot of information there, too bad I don't read Spanish(?)...

At least with the screen images that are also posted there you can get an idea of what is going on.
