Went to go get my 59d6500 today. Didn't have it in stock. Actually they were out of stock at all their stores in Manitoba and in most of Canada. Said it would be another month for sure. So I told my buddy to hook up a crazy deal. Wound up going with the 64d550. Pretty slick I must say. I paid $2300 tax in for pn64d550 all the shriek movies and 3 pairs of 3d glasses. Think it worked out pretty decently. Here's some pics.

Just got mine today! Unbelievable picture! Will be tweaking settings this weekend. What's really cool is that I found a Samsung remote app for iPhone that mirrors the remote that comes the tv. iPhone controls my Tv now.

Was watching avatar tonight and noticed the brightness of the screen change about 3 or four times. Any ideas what that is? Can it be fixed with altering settings or is it a dud tv?

Switch to Movie Mode. In my case at 1080p/24Hz I didn't see any of this, but on standard mode, I think the settings are too hot.

I'd love to see some of the pro's calibration setting recommendations.

Looks great, i am in the same boat as you were, my only concern with the 550 is the rear inputs. The power cord sticks out a bit doesn't it at the back as will the aerial cable as they aren't flat mounted like the 6500, as i wanted to use an ultra slim mount (13mm) so it was basically flush with the wall.

How far does the back of the plasma stick out from the wall?

Any dramas mounting a tv that big on the wall?

It was happening in movie mode. It's odd cause this didn't happen with the 51" (had 51d550 previously) I did play with the settings a bit to make the picture a little more crisp. Maybe it's the settings I used. I find it a bit harder to adjust the picture on the 64" over the 51". I'm using the Cali cd off the site.

I'm using a evermount. Wasn't too hard to mount as I previous had a 51" mounted and the mount supported up to 64". The hardest part was plugging everything in. It took 3 ppl. Then putting the bar that runs along the bottom of the mount to keep it from moving in was a pain. Had to get my fiancée with tiny hands to put it in and the cotter pin. I was concerned about getting the thinnest tv mounted as close as possible before as well to. Mine sticks out maybe 3-3.5"(the front of thr tv) from the wall. Don't really notice it. And for the price difference I didn't feel it was worth it. 64" is just epic! Once you have it on your wall it's just amazing.

But to answer your question the power cord and hdmi and so on stick straight out so if you did want to go closer you'd need at least to get a 45 degree hdmi cable and you could go a bit closer. Maybe .5" then the power would start to get pretty close. After work I'll take some pictures of how far away it is from the wall. I use a tape measure for reference. Hopefully that'll help you. I'd say go with the 550 and get the 64" don't bother with the 6500. If anything I'd go the 64d8000

Godson, the glossiness of the screen actually enhances the look of the picture IMO when being viewed under optimal settings.

As for "blwn281" who got that sweet deal on the 64" package for $2300.00, that's awesome! I bought the exact same package in Toronto from futureshop for $2800.00. The retail value was $3400.00. I thought I did a great job of bargaining until I read your post lol.

I am loving this tv so far. Does anyone have any good calibration settings on a pn51d550 hooked up to a ps3? Thanks in advance for any help. I don't have a calibration disk yet.

I have a D450 and am seeing this happening A LOT. Black levels increase within the same scene and if the scene is lengthy enough, they'll pop back (need I mention that I have every energy saving feature and PQ processing feature OFF). HDMI to PS3 with div/xvid material, not tested other inputs or content but I think it's an image processing issue either completely internal or due to the HDMI input. Also blacks are decent in certain scenes, but in others where I feel they should be consistent and therefore similar, they're a lighter shade.

I've downloaded and applied the latest firmware but didn't fix a thing.

I had the D550 on order but have cancelled it (for the lounge, D450 is for bedroom). The D450 will stay as it's not a train-smash and completely livable but purchasing another with this same inherent defect? I think not.

Seems a problem across the D4 and 5 series units. By the way, I've tried it in 'movie' and 'standard' modes, then calibrated the latter, didn't make a difference at all. I have the cell light down to '3' or so for dark conditions, don't think pushing it up would help and my eyes would hurt, so it's not an option.

Anyone have anything to offer? What a lemon Samsung is.

I had the same problem with my 50c6500 ,none seemed to have that problem at that time , but it seemed to get better with time so that the pops didn't seem annoying, but is was still there .

Try to keep the cell light above 15,watch movies in a better lit room.

For the folks who think they dont have the pops, test your set with the following clips.
1.watch survivor (watch nignt scenes & tribal council)
2.watch movie mummy returns(watch scene where o connel returns to london and also the scene where they dig up imhotep from the dig site)

The brightness pops are very pronounced at these scenes, even when they have diminished a lot after a few months of heavy use.

What firmware??? Is there a US firmware download for the 64D550? I have the wireless USB adapter on mine and it says there are no updates available.

the black level sounds like a dynamic contrast ratio/iris that is in many projectors.

BTW I don't think 2300 bones is an awesome deal for the 64 (shrek movies suck), and you can get it for less on amazon shipped.

Current Projects:
IN PROGRESS (80%) - Building 3D Theater room.
IN PROGRESS (30%) - Building Lounge/Hallway Area.
IN PROGRESS (15%) - Building Home LAN (4 PCs).
ON HOLD - Building Home Gym.
ON HOLD - Building Simulation Room (Eyefinity).
ON HOLD - Building Theater room (Sim2 HT380, 2.35 14ft wide).

It's was 2300 tax in 2054 b4 taxes. I searched amazon and a few others couldn't find it for less where did you find it for less? I would like to know. Plus shipping to Canada from the us is quite a bit. Espically for a 64".

I'm having the same problems with the brightness pops. I'm wondering If anyone has any idea as to why the sets do this? Is it just a bad tv? Should I exchange it for a different one? I have all the different settings that could cause it turned off. I noticed it watching avatar 3D last night.

Interesting regarding the brightness/contrast pops. Black levels are awesome on this set. I've tested my Pioneer Elite 05-FD on HDMI port 1 and 2 with a Monster HDMI 1000 Ultra cable with 1080p/24Hz.

With factory default settings, then changing to movie mode, Eco settings off:

If I Cinema Smooth disabled, I get occasional pops.

If it's enabled, I get absolutely NO pops!

Maybe we should compare source equipment, HDMI cables, etc, and see if Cinema Smooth fixes the problem for those that get the pop

Thanks,
Jason

I asked this a few pages back - not about the pop but about the buzzing. No one responded.

I would think given the level of concern on these that someone at this point has called this in as part of their warranty. I am very curiuos what the feedback is too. On my 64D550 I do not have buzzing. I do have occasional brightness pops - very minor but again am curious as to what adjustments will ultimately correct this (per Samsung).

I called my local shop and they tried to walk me through changing some settings (ones I had already turned off). After they suggest I called my local samsung authorized repair agent. They are closed till tuesday. I'm going to be calling them then. I'm also noticing that when calibrating (using the disc off this site) on the flashing color bars pattern I cannot seem to get the colors perfect no matter what I alter. When I had a 51" 550 it was easy to do. I'm almost thinking I'm gonna talk to the shop about getting the 8000
