Thanks for posting that.

How well do these picture settings translate to lower models in the Samsung line?

I will be setting up my 64d550 tonight and will test out these settings. I will post the results tomorrow. By the way, I am a novice and this is my first plasma tv.

It's technically my first plasma also. I don't have any kind of calibration disc, or a dvd/bluray player to play one, so the best I can do is eyeball it all.

Anyone who has their 64D550 would it be possible to snap a pic of the rear input/outputs for me, I can't find a rear pic of the TV anywhere.

Also can anyone confirm or test if the USB ConnectShare Movie plays MKV files or do they list what file types it will play.

Thanks

Could somebody with a D550 take a look at the "Arri 8 Bit Grey Gradient" test pattern (or additionally any other 8-bit R, G, B patterns) from this page and tell me if you see any noticeable banding, luminance or color temperature fluctuations, etc or it's a smooth gradient from black to white (monotonically increasing luminance and stable white temperature with equally sized steps...)?

Could you guess how many shades does it have? (You should be able to distinguish 256 steps but I never saw that much on any plasma displays which I saw. So, I am curious about the new models with updated chipset... -> It's easier to guess if you can watch this test pattern on a proper LCD [like an IPS or PVA] display first).

And could you tell me about the dithering noise? Is it as noticeable as it is on Panasonic G20 plasmas? (Is it noticeable like hell if you watch a relatively dark and homogeneous picture area? ; I hope they improved the dithering noise pattern with this new chipset...)

"DIY certified hobby-calibrator" (based on ChadB's "warning signs" list

Pictures are in the Quick Guide and the TV does support MKV files.

Here are my settings after a good deal of tweaking. I used the settings from the above post and then dialed everything in with DVE.

Picture Mode: Movie
Cell Light: 17
Contrast: 81
Brightness: 64
Sharpness: 0
Color: 52
Tint: G49/R51
Advanced Settings:
Black Tone: Off
Dynamic Contrast: Off
Gamma: +1
RGB Only Mode: Off
Color Space: Auto
White Balance: RO-25, GO-23, BO-24, RG-18, GG-24, BG-25
Flesh Tone: 0
EE: Off
Motion Lighting: Off
Picture Options:
Color Tone: Warm 2
DNR: Off
MPEG Noise Filter: Off

I've got about 30 hours of burn-in slides under my belt...going for 100, then I'll recalibrate. Loving the picture!

Frank, Thanks!!

I had to go out last night, so could not set up the 64d550. So, today, I will get it out of the box and I am going to use your exact settings and see how it looks with the new panasonic blu-ray player.

By the way, for those who are plasma shopping, I got the tv at ABT for a very good price and with two free sets of 3d glasses. Had a very good experience with the folks at ABT.

going to try those out, I have about 80 hours of break in slides done. Going for 150.

EDIT: Yeah I tried these, very good. Much better than the previous settings posted in this thread (which were from a c550)

I will use these as my starting point for WOW once I get 150 hours.

Thanks a ton.

Think I may have figured out that flickering problem. I was watching Akira last night and at the very beginning where the "camera" pulls out of the crater, the black level was floating, rather, flickering between dark and super dark; however (I'm not in front of my tv right now so I don't think I have all the terms right), I went into the picture adjustments and changed "HDMI Level"(?) from "low" to "normal" (I had seen the setting before but it was greyed out until then.) No more flickering... at least on that scene.

In regards to the Dynamic Contrast setting, has anyone checked yet to see if that's merely adjusting the brightness or extending the ANSI (or on-screen) contrast? I was thinking the black level was lacking in high contrast scenes (Quarttrich's (sp?) intro scene in Avatar for example, the blacks looked really grey) so I changed it from "off" to "low" and it seemed to be an improvement. Didn't toy with it much last night other than that, and lowering the contrast level a bit.

As I stated in my review over on the "Samsung 2011 plasma" thread, mine has a really bad buzz. It's a long-shot but I think my wall mounting screws might be a bit long so I'm going to put a couple of washers on to see if that does anything, if not, I'm taking this unit back and swapping out for another one. I really like this TV but the buzz is just about unbearable; since no one else seems to have a serious buzz going on, think it might just be my unit.

OK, The 64d550 is now set up and I used all the settings from Frank. Tested with scenes from a blu-ray "Fifth Element" and looks great! Really great! No Buzzing at all and, even in the living room with windows open, very little glare! I am thrilled. Can't wait to see the same scenes on the dvd tonight after sunset to really get a good look at the set.

Does anyone know what the difference is between auto color space and "native" color space?

PS: Sforza, sorry, when I said 2 sets, I meant two 3d glasses, not 4.

Just got it back to sears. The glare was a killer for me, hello ST30!!

Can you compare the 2 sets, PQ-wise? I'm torn between the 60ST30 and the 59D550. I preferred past Sammy's due to their sharper, cleaner image...but seems the new Panny's have improved on their noisy/grainy PQ.

Oh, and for all, how are these new D models at handling IR?

IR for the 3d glasses or the remote? They don't work with IR 3D glasses, only the 2011 blu-tooth glasses.

Ah... well, in that case, I haven't noticed a single case of IR. Seems to be pretty good. If a set is prone to IR, as my old Panny was, the PS3 menu really seems to bring it out and it hasn't yet with my Sammy.

Can anyone tell me the difference between using 16/9 screen setting and "screen fit"?

i had my PN50B550 in the living room before i bought the 59D550 and it would flicker every so often, the sound would go off and back on, sometimes the picture to.. i allways thought it was in my cable or something to do with direct TV.. but now with the 59D it does not do it.. the 50B is 1 year 1 month old, so i called samsung and told them this.. they said to fax a copy of the receipt and they would extend the warrinty and have someone come fix it.. i was like Thanks that would be great ! then a day or so later i get a call from samsung.. they do not have anyone around here to do the work and asked if i would be inrested in a white glove exchange... i asked what that was ? he told me they would swap out my tv for a new one, they would drop the new one off and take the old one.. i asked what tv they would swap it out with ? he said they do not have any 50B's so it would be with a 2011 model.. i was like wow... that would be great ! so i take it i will be getting a 51D550... now that is great customer service !! so now i will a 59D and a 51D ... the 50 in my bedroom is sure nice having a screen that big.. i have it hung on the wall to and have my logitech Z-680 hooked to it for surround sound.. i had bought the 680 for my computer 5-6 years ago then found it sounded pretty good so have always used it for my tv in my room to..

Does the D550 have internet apps? As far as I can tell it does not.

Also, looks like the USB port is limited to audio and pictures? It can't play a wide variety of video files like the D6500 and above?

Thanks.

16:9 seems to zoom a bit, whereas Screenfit fits the whole picture in the screen. The only reason I know this is because the THX optimizer on my Incredibles DVD has a test for this. With 16:9, I see two yellow rectangles; with screenfit, I see all 3. However, I left 16:9 on because on 2.35:1 movies, the black bars take up way too much space on screenfit. I'll compromise losing a tad bit of picture info for the slightly larger picture... especially since I've apparently become accustomed to 16:9 over the past couple of years.
