Hello all,

New Sammy D550 review online at DigitalVersus.com

It comes off with four stars, which isn't bad for a budget TV, but for the same money the reviewers still prefer the Panasonic TX-P50ST30.

For full test results and comparison tool go to the DigitalVersus 'TV Face-Off' - there's a link right at the bottom of the review that takes you straight to a comparison of the D550 and Panasonic ST30 side by side.

Well, the TV went on Back Order while they fuddled around with my order. Beyond frustrated, over here. No way to get this set now and have to buy something else. New Egg really screwed me on this one.

Both Vanns.com and Crutchfield.com have this model in stock at under two grand.

It might be becoming more uniform pink across the entire screen as time passes (not sure though). Note: I'm at approx 70 hours on it now.

At any rate, the only place I have noticed it so far is on the ice when watching hockey (well, I can maybe see it at times in sky/clouds if I really look for it).

Even by my picky standards, it's not a big deal, and I'm pretty sure that I can live with this because (a) I really don't notice it when watching other content, and (b) I am otherwise loving the colors and picture quality of this TV.

I did some googling, and I couldn't seem to find any "pink tint" issues with the D550's, so maybe it is rare. At any rate, if anyone has any thoughts on the matter, I'm all ears.

Otherwise, I'll just hope and pray that the problem at least doesn't get worse over the next few weeks, because I really don't want to even consider returning it.

Thanks,

Wayne

Update after approx 300 hours: no change. One week left in the return period. As I said though, the thought of going through the hassle of returning it is vile, and considering how much I like the beast overall, I think I will most likely take my chances that the tint won't get worse.

Can you pls post sample picture(s), just for reference? I myself notice pinkish tint at right part of my screen and greenish tint in the center area of my screen, especially visible on light/white background like you said in clouds, or even the scrolling pattern, and would like to know how bad it is. About 200 hours but just noticed these tints recently. I've tried adjusting white balance to reduce the effect but these 2 are still prominent in those areas. Thanks.

Is there any way to name/modify a folder on a USB drive so the TV (D550) doesn't scan it? I want to hide a backup folder full of photos, mp3s, flacs, etc. I'll stick it in System Volume Information as a last resort.

EDIT: I stuck it in the $RECYCLE.BIN folder and it doesn't show up.

I think I got a lemon because there are plenty of happy people with that tv. But I could not overcome the issues, and I had to return it.

The same day (yesterday) I also found a PN59D500 for the same great price so I impulsively bought it without really knowing anything about it, except that it would probably have more glare than the 55ST30, and probably not as good black levels.

To sum it up, I went from two weeks of plasma stress & frustration to a day of bliss. I am really happy with the PN59D500 so far. Yes, it has more glare, but it's in a bat cave so that's OK. Maybe the black level is not as good as with the 55ST30, but I guess I am not discerning enough to notice. What I am noticing and loving about the PN59D500 though is the larger screen (awesome!), the ability to get the panel brighter when desired (hockey looks great), the great colors right out of the box, and the general PQ. I can tell that with some playing around with the settings, I will be very happy with this set.

So far so good!

Cheers,

Wayne

YAY!!! I am glad to see someone likes the Samsung better than the Panasonic. I'm tired of hearing that Panasonic is better, bla, bla, bla.
I've had both and love my Samsung 59D550!

Yup. Like I said, 2 weeks of frustration and stress when I had my lemon st55, and so far a month of joy with my 59d550 :-)

Hey all,

Came back from holiday and the 51d550 won't switch on!
The power led is lit up but when i try to turn it on the led goes off for a second, then the tv clicks a few times from the back of the monitor, the screen stays black and the power led just flashes repeatedly....

Anyone know if the issue is fixable?

Thanks

Have you tried pulling the power cable and plugging it back in? These are computers after all. Had to do that to get my 3D glasses to sync.

I also lost the functionality of the touch sensitive buttons on the panel (don't know if this happens to everyone).

The tweak was worth it to me, but it took a lot of time to dial it in just so.

I went into the SM last summer to change the panel name, did a bunch of calibration, and my brightness pops all but disappeared.

I don't know if it's the programming I've been watching recently or if something else has happened, but the brightness pops seem to have returned. I know there's a firmware update available for the PN59D550 that's supposed to have addressed the issue.

My question is this- can I do the firmware update while my TV thinks it's something other than the D550 (because of the change I made in the SM), or do I need to go back into the SM, change it back, and then do the upgrade?

Exchanged the next day and wow... A huge improvement over the B550. Deeper blacks, no IR whatsoever, much brighter, and much more stable picture. The b550 had noticeable flicker and dancing pixels, mostly on static images like my PC desktop I always thought that's just how plasmas were, the D550 has a more still picture on static images. I had a hard time deciding between a few different sets around the same price, in the end size won and I'm very pleased. Now back to the Game of Thrones BD set.

I have the same HDTV and the Game of Thrones look awesome on it. Plus Avatar 3D is terrific too. Three months with this HDTV and I'm still tickled pink with it. Before now, I was on the NET more than watching TV, not anymore! This HDTV rocks!

Yeah, I'm pretty thrilled with mine as well. It had (or probably still has) a bit of a "pink tinge areas" issues, but now that I'm not being hyper-critical, I don't even see it (the only time I could see it anyway was with hockey, and I don't notice it anymore). In movie mode for regular content or blurays, the D550 more than rocks. Especially when you consider the price. Very happy!

I have noticed these pink areas also on my unit. Has anyone tried the pure white screen for extended periods to get rid of them?

Are there any developers that work on firmware for this T.V. I am new to this site and I was wondering if somebody developed something where I can access the internet with my T.V.?

Yes, the firmware is called PS3 :-)

Seriously, even if you could, I bet it would be slow/sluggish and somewhat useless (that's what I found with the ST50 that I briefly had).

Hi all, my 64D550 has developed two (1 pixel wide) vertical lines about 15mm from one and other and about 250mm from the right edge of the display. One is mostly green and the other purple.

Any suggestions on a fix would be appreciated. Otherwise I purchased it in July last year so is covered by warranty.

Dave.

Hi All,

I'm thinking of picking up a portable speaker for outdoor parties and such. The one i'm looking at is the Jawbone Jambox. It has a 3.5mm stereo connection. Will I be able to connect my d550 to the speaker using this connection and if so, does it only work with certain inputs?

Thanks.

So the 3.5mm connection on the d550 is for input only i guess?

Can it connect to an external speaker using bluetooth?

A local repairer has ordered a new screen under warranty. Once it is here I take my tv in for repair. Samsung tech support, the repairer and the store I purchased from all provided excellent service.

I found the screen to highly reflective, far far worse than my 47" LCD Vizio. The picture does look good though. Any words on realiability? For $500 more I can get my hands on this model PN60E530A3FXZC. Comments?

Hey all,

Just picked up this set last week and had it professionally calibrated. Thought I would post the pro-cal settings here

TV Settings

Picture Mode: CAL-Night
Cell Light 19
Contrast 85
Brightness 66
Sharpness 17
Color 47
Tint G51/R49
Advanced Settings
Black Tone Off
Dynamic Contrast Off
Gamma -1
Color Space Auto
Flesh Tone 0
Edge Enhancement Off
Motion Lighting Off

Whit Balance
ROffset 23
GOffset 16
BOffset 25
RGain 13
GGain 33
BGain 18
Picture Options

Color Tone Warm2
Digital Noise Filter Auto
MPEG Noise Filter Auto
HDMI Black Level Normal

I'm pretty happy with it, though I will say I upped the gamma to a +1, changed the color temp to cool and the hdmi black level to normal. I found their settings a touch on the dark side for my tastes
