Well I'll verify it when it comes. It should be the end of next week.

Confirmed. My (free) TV now boots and I only paid $37 to fix. God do I love eBay. Under $50 including a remote? Man is today a good day.

Thanks for the tip on the compatibility of the D8000 main board. There was one available for cheap on eBay. (The D7000 boards weren't.)

I just installed it last night, and it works. There was one additional connector on the top of the board that didn't exist on the D7000, but everything appears fine without anything connected to it.

Now to recalibrate my set...

A question regarding calibration:

In the main calibration thread, the settings appear very different between D7000 and D8000 displays.

Is that just due to the additional settings on the D8000 board, or is there a difference in the actual plasma panel or drivers?

In other words, would you expect settings for a 51D7000 with a D8000 board to be closer to a normal D7000 or a D8000?

I don't know about settings, don't really care. It's a free tv so factory defaults are good enough for me.

As far as that connector, I didn't have it on my new board and only have seen them on pics of uk-euro boards. Not USA ones on eBay. But considering my d8000 board doesn't have it is guess it might be some diagnostic port or something.

But my limited cal knowledge is that each individual panel is different and each room is different so you can't just copy-paste settings anyway.

Interesting. See this one (the board is rotated counterclockwise from your picture, so the extra is on the left):

Still going strong.

So do I have a 7000 or 8000? Or A 7500?

Samsung PN64D7000 Saga

050511 – Samsung PN64D7000 plasma TV purchased four and one-half years ago.

112915 – TV malfunctions during a Samsung-initiated software update. TV enters endless power cycling sequence. Online suggestions regarding entering remote codes don’t work.

113015 – Call to Samsung Tech Support. She offers a few suggestions; none fix the problem. She gives me a special case number so I can schedule a repair.

120115 – Authorized Samsung Repair Technician visits home. He confirms problem and diagnoses a faulty main board. Cost to repair is $314. He determines that part is unavailable and will not become available from Samsung. No new/used part available on eBay.

120915 – Samsung TV Exchange Dept. Representative calls me. She offers a TV exchange of a new Samsung UN65JU7100 for my old TV plus $1,000. I counter with a UN65JS8500 upgrade model. She agrees for $1,100. I accept. This includes one year warranty and free shipping. As part of the process: She said there was no TV I could get without some $ payment; Samsung would not issue a refund of any amount; Samsung would not issue me a credit for use at a retailer.

122815 – Samsung UN65J8500 delivered to home. Evaluation to follow.

I just updated the firmware on my PN64D7000 for the first time in several years. Did Samsung ever enable the ability to use Cinema Smooth from any source? Did anyone ever find a way to change the model of the TV to a D8000 with any benefits as had been found with some of the C series?

PN64D7000 Replaced by UN65JS8500

See my post above.

Brief Comments on Samsung UN65JS8500 4K LED TV
  • This TV replaced a broken/unrepairable Samsung PN64D7000 Plasma TV.
  • I was very satisfied with the picture quality of the plasma TV.
  • If it were still working, I would not replace the plasma TV now for a new 4K TV.
  • The 4K picture is very detailed. Even upscaled 1080p source material looks very good.
  • The jump from standard definition (SD) to high definition (HD) was substantial and worthwhile.
  • The improvement from HD to 4K is noticeable, but not quite a “must have now” for me.
  • I would have preferred to use the plasma TV for another year or two then buy a new, larger 4K OLED TV when the prices come down.
BTW: I could never configure the new TV (with HDMI 2.2) to work properly via Audio Return Channel (ARC) with my Yamaha receiver (with HDMI 1.4). I have resorted to using a Digital Optical Audio Cable to output the TV Smart Hub sound to the receiver.

Thanks for that post. As a D8000 owner your post helped to reinforce my hope to hold out for an affordable 4K OLED.
