Brightness pops of the whole picture while watching Star Wars IV almost made me turn it off and go back to my tube tv. Between the buzzing, peeling filters, and the incessant brightness pops this TV is a piece of crap compared to my much older XBR960, and aside from the size, the picture is not as good.

Tech replaced my panel yesterday. Still pops. Also replaced main board again. Old one bricked the TV when she pulled the plug during some kind of upgrade. She tried logic board before. I have a little hope from the situation, she said she is going to try and contact Samsung over this and see what there response is. This was her second visit. I basically have a brand new TV all new parts is what she said. I told her doesn't do it with cinema smooth engaged, maybe Samsung will look at this and find a fix.

Someone needs to start a class action and we can all sign up for it, then they will fix, like Panasonic did

Still for sale, any takers?

I've had 5 D8000's all of them do this. It depends on the source material.

I have a very recent august build and it does it as well.

I watched The Fellowship of The Ring extended blu-ray yesterday with cinema smooth on and it looked AMAZING! I didn't notice a single brightness pop. Perhaps I just wasn't looking for them this time around. I don't know. I am going to try and ignore this issue and if I can't, then I will figure out what to do.

It's fine when you watch blu ray with cinema smooth, but you can't engage this on other sources.

So i got my TV (PS59D550) and it looks great. Have played SD, HD, 3D, and PS3. All looks good.
I have the very slight buzzing, but you only notice it when the TV is mute. As soon you put some volume it's gone.
To the brightness pops, i'm not sure if i've noticed it or not, if i have, i've so far seen it happened 2-3 instances while watching. I'm going to update more when i've had some more viewing. Just got it yesterday and have only watched a few hours so far, but it's a brilliant TV. Dominates my room.

Isn't there a petition going round for Samsung to enable CS on all sources?

So this should fix the problem then?

It seems to fix it, but I think the pq may suffer slightly. I would be willing to accept this, to not have brightness pops. You got link to petition?

Stop beeing stupid because Samsung will think we are all stupid and we don't really know what problems we have and what fixes we want.

60Hz input (US TV) -> 60Hz panel refresh, MLL ~ 0.035 cd/m^2
24Hz input (BD without CS) -> 60Hz panel refresh, MLL ~ 0.035 cd/m^2
24Hz input (BD with CS) -> 96Hz panel refresh, MLL ~ 0.06 cd/m^2
50Hz input (practicaly CS without control) -> 100Hz panel refresh, MLL ~ 0.06 cd/m^2

I think a 60Hz@120Hz implementation would require a new hardware revision and has an MLL about 0.07 cd/m^2, while it wouldn't really solve anything.

The belief that your problem isn't there when CinemaSmooth is engaged is probably nothing else but a cincidence.

CS is basically a panel refresh rate setting for 24Hz input, it shouldn't change anything else. (The MLL rise is a direct consequece of the higher refresh rate.)
I doubt if the panel refresh rate directly playes a part in the brighttness issues, but even if it does, they should find another solution to fix it for the 60Hz refresh mode.

I believe the problem is always there, and it's only less noticeable with CinemaSmooth.

I am not sure if I have another problem too (an uncommon error over the common error) but I have brightness problems with CinemaSmooth too.

I did notice the brightness shifts also with cinema smooth on, but - as janos wrote - it's difficult to notice it: you have to put your attention only to the dark spots where it appears (mainly black bars for me)

Just purchased and received Samsung PN59D550 Plasma from bestbuy.ca for $999 with the 3d Shrek Kit, with an August 2011 build date and the buzzing is horrible. I hope to get a few exchanged hoping to reduce/eliminate the buzzing.

Update - Best buy said they "may" replace it, but more then likely just refund my money. Not happy, but optimistic.

I ordered a 59D6500 last week. It arrived today. It's an August build and it definitely exhibits the brightness pops. I saw it happen immediately after bringing up the Comcast guide menu, but they were easiest to see in scenes of extreme brightness - I tried NHL HD and Resident Evil After Life and it was easy to spot in both.

I also had the 2010 59D590 (great TV) and can say without question that the 590 did not exhibit this same problem. I'm still well within the return period, but not sure whether I want to go through the hassle of the exchange. I'm hoping Samsung can come out with a firmware to fix it.

Got a similar bundle from BestBuy UK, 4 glasses and the last airbender for £1100.
I love N. American prices, just flip the currency sign and pay half
AFAIK, BestBuy are usually very good about returning things, so you should be fine.

I didn't receive my 64D550 but I watch it for a long time in the store and could not see any brightness pop! I will see tomorrow if I'm happy or not.

I was playing around with my 64D7000 and found a reliable way to reproduce the brightness pops with a specific animation, and a setting that appears to stop them from occurring. Wanted to pass this along to the community to see if they see similar results...

I'm set to Movie mode, with all the extras turned off for my baseline.

When I set the Cell Light to 0 I got the "pops" to stop occurring. Anything higher than 0 and I could see them in varying degrees (once I passed 3+ they seemed to "pop" equally). With it set to 0 the image is really dark so it's not really acceptable like this, but the Cell Light might be at the heart of the problem?

Motion lighting on= no help. I thought it may have tamed the fBr to some degree but watching a 2.35 movie last night was obvious it did not help. In fact it was so bad the wife noticed and said what the hell is wrong with the tv, it looks like a strobe light.

This is concurrent with my own testing, in fact if you go below 10 on the cell light the brightness pops are much less noticeable and probably wouldn't be detected by someone who isn't looking for them.

I hope you are all calling Samsung to complain, that is what the tech has said to do, if we ever want to see this fixed. The tech on the phone said that everyone should go to every site they can think of (Samsung, CNET, Amazon, etc...) and leave one star reviews. Just copy and paste. They said that once it really stats to hurt them on these sites, they will address it.

Please do, that is the only way we can really effect this, besides filling a suit.

Funny. I submitted a review on Samsung's site and it was rejected. I specifically rated it poorly because of the brightness jumps.

Hey all, just wanted to report some stuff I've noticed.

First, here's my settings (from memory):
59D550
laptop 24hz connected via HDMI
HDMI black level: full (extended)
all proccessing off.
cell light 10
brightness 45
colour standard
sharpness 20
cinema smooth on

Ok, I set my extended desktop to all black, no icons on the TV desktop.

If I have brightness set to 45, there is a glow to the TV. It is the TV's MLL (not very good by the way). If I drag the mouse to the TV the brightness does not pop.

If I set the brightness to 44, the TV is dead black. No glow. It looks off.
As soon as I drag the mouse over to the TV the brightness pops back up to glow "black" like it did earlier. Drag the mouse away and the brightness drops back off to pitch black.
If I watch content with brightenss set to 44 the brightness changes as the input changes. If brightness set to 45, i get no pops at all.

Now, I know that there is a factory calibration, and everybody has it a little different due to the cal stored in the service menu.

In order for me to get it to look good with no pops, I need to raise the brightness to the point where the TV doesn't turn the cells off when there is an all black input.

Hey guys, I found this thread after someone in the official PN51D550 thread mentioned "brightness pops". I had noticed this only once recently on my 550, and I did a google of it and found this thread. Like I said I have a 550 july build with the 1018 firmware. So I decided to see if I could replicate this. I tried several sources found in this thread. I tried Inception snow scene, Harry Potter philosophers stone (first few minutes), The Ninth Gate (beginning credits), Lord of the Rings Beginning scene with the Map, and finally a SBS mkv of 3D Narnia. And the only place I saw any fluctuating brightness was the scene in Narnia when the guys dive off the boat in the beginning. But for me it went from light to dark, instead of getting brighter. So Im not sure what thats all about. But someone in this thread had mentioned that specific scene so I tried it. And these are my settings Im using.

Picture Mode: Standard

Cell: 16

Cont: 85

Bright: 60

Sharp: 50

Color: 50

Tint: 50/50

(Advanced)

Blk Tone: OFF

Dyn Cont: OFF

Gamma: 0

RGB: OFF

Col Space: Auto

Wht Balance: Default 25

Flesh Tone: 0

Edge Enh: OFF

Mot Light: OFF

(PICTURE OPTIONS)

Color Tone: Standard (Dont like Warm 2)

DNF: OFF

MPEG: OFF

Film Mode: OFF

HDMI Level: Normal (If not greyed out)

I know some of these settings arent what others will like of want, but these work for me with no real noticed brightness pops. Other than one time, and the other was the Narnia scene I mentioned above.
