I'm debating about going to CES this year. I didn't make it last year but it turns out I didn't miss anything as last years plasmas left me quite underwhelmed. I haven't heard any rumors about new plasmas yet.

I could use a new BR player as well but other than that, not much I can justify looking at. I don't know if Oppo will have a new BR player in time for CES.

Nobody, you will probably be alone. Be preperared to spend some hours alone in a big, empty, silent, dark and cold room. Once you enter, pray for some luck to find the EXIT alone in the dark.
(Me personally: no. Mainly because I live in the EU but I skip every similar events nearby anyway.)

CES is a lot bigger than comparable EU events.

Can just anybody go to CES? Or do you have to be in "the business" to attend?

I think you have to have credentials. I remember one time it was here in Chicago. I made up my mind that I was going to get in there (lol). I took the day off of work went to McCormick Place and walked right in. True story. I remember seeing tall, slim David Robinson (The Admiral) there. The next year they let regular Joes in for a fee then it was back to credentials.

I used to go nearly every year (when financial times were better). At that time there seemed to be some pretty big jumps in technology but with R&D getting cut there doesn't seem to be much to get excited about. I'm hoping things will be different this year but it would seem unlikely that Panasonic will have something revolutionary.

Actually I think(/hope) Panasonic will show something interesting this year (speaking about consumer level PDPs).

I don't expect Samsung to make another big step this year. It will be nice if they fix their current issues but other than that... I don't expect miracles. They took a relatively big step between 2010-11, so it's the time for small refinements.

But it would be a good time for Panasonic to finally show something after this current „small refinements year”.

Panasonic is *rumored to have a new, not reworked, filter and panel driving system, along with a sleeker, more modern, design (both bezel and stand) for 2012. 3D glasses are going to be standardized across the three major brands (Samsung, Sony & Panasonic).
Personally, I like this years design a lot... something similar to Samsung's 'spider' stand is to be expected with a much thinner frame for next year.

*basically from the horses mouth.

Panasonic *may* have larger sized panels for 2012 too.

I definitely DO want a larger than 65" plasma but I'd want it to be 4K. Granted not much for native 4K res media but 1080p media upscaled to 4K would look a hell of a lot better on an 80" screen than 1080p native would.

I think 3D will be decline in interest unless it is glasses free. For goodness sake I had my eyeballs cut with a laser so I would never have to wear glasses, why would I willingly put them on to relax in my home?

Panasonic has just been phoning it in the last couple of years so i'm wondering if this is the year they actually step up to the plate or Samsung steals my heart. I was fiercely loyal to the Kuro's while they were in production. Panasonic became my consolation choice but hasn't stirred that much in me like Pioneer used to. Samsung was my fall back from Panasonic but Samsung seems to be putting more effort in than Panasonic as of late.

I would disagree on that. The fact Samsung even refuses to acknowledge the fluctuating brightness issue (which to me is absolutely unacceptable) says something more about Panasonic which went out of their way to fix it - even though it was seemingly fairly expensive to do so. The rising blacks seemed to be fixed, and they have attempted to fix some of the color issue, but I get the sense some of it is "unfixable" but the color can still look excellent on the Panasonic with proper calibration.

I think the key is that it "seems to be fixed" and it is something they denied or avoided commenting on for years. They didn't eactly admit to it as far as I recall.

The new filter and panel driving system sound great, the more modern bezel and stand design do not, if by "modern" they mean that awful trend towards almost non-existant borders and cheap spider claw stands.

I hope Panasonic sticks to a more traditional look just to stand apart stylistically from both Samsung and LG.

No, I won't be able to attend CES but I would have loved to check out new electronic products and upcoming technology there. Keep checking this forum for the updates though.

Hopefully that doesn't mean introducing new issues, like previews years with rising blacks and whites and all that... I really hope that 2012 will be the year I finally buy one.. Yeah I've been patient, very patient.

The tech geek on the local news just reported that Spike will air 12 hours of CES coverage.....

http://www.deadline.com/2011/10/spik...er-ces-confab/

Spike TV Lands Deal To Cover CES Confab

Spike TV has struck an exclusive deal with the organizers of CES to provide live coverage of the giant technology and consumer products trade show in January. The male-centric network said today that it will air more than 12 hours of CES All Access Live programming beginning with a five-hour block on January 10, featuring breaking news, interviews, and the unveiling of new video games and devices. CES, which is becoming increasingly important to the media and content industries with its focus on high-profile product launches, is set for January 10-13, 2012 in Las Vegas. Last year, Comcast's gamer network G4 claimed the most coverage of CES; the network said today it is planning the same amount for the upcoming confab via its program Attack of the Show! and that Spike's deal does not affect its coverage plans.
