Okay, So i just picked up a 55gt30 for $1400. Its almost sounding like I should wait and maybe pick up a 55st50 when it hits that price. Does anyone know if the st50 will have a better picture than the gt30 or equal to it? The brighter panel on the st50 would be nice though.

Plus I'm now a new member.

Interesting. Kind of like 5,000,000:1 contrast ratios on LEDs?

The onl;y worry I have about getting the Panasonic 65vt50 is that last year the vt30 was hyped up and now look, so many complaints about ir and burn in (2 tv's from a very reliable source that owns them) green blob, fbr, white pops, etc... . So I am hesitating cause spending $4k is a big deal for me 9 especially on a tv), not that I don't have $$$ but I hate paying alot for something that in the end was a bad purchase. Can anyone , and I mean anyone with real knowledge, be willing to stake their reputation on the new vt50, that it will be as advertised and will not have the flurry of problems the vt30 had ? Yes I know all display's have a problem here or there, but I am not talking about 1 or 2 sets here and there, I am talking about a large number of sets, with more than just the occasional symptom that is easily fixed. So, anyone want to put it on the line and back these new vt50's ???

That's kind of silly to ask, nobody can do that because nobody has a VT50 yet to comment/review. Its all pure speculation at this point.

Gee Tony, you're asking a question - or for a Commitment - that no one can reasonably answer (give) yet.

Might expect pretty much the same people to "stand up for" the VT50 as were willing to do likewise for the VT30 - and you've already pointed out how well THAT worked out!

We have a 60" ST30 - our 4th 60" 2011 Pan plasma - that still has (just) over 60 days remaining on its return period, and right now it is 50/50 whether or not it will be HERE at the end of April.

The 2012 models SOUND enticing, but then so did the 2011 panels.
However, will NOT be an Early Adopter of ANY of the 2012 sets - from any manufacturer, and regardless of any "introductory" bundles or special bundles....
It is clear that Quality Control has taken a dive over the past several years, and I am not willing to be a "Beta Tester" trying to uncover the manufacturer's Current Year's Glitches....

The 50% brighter is ostensibly when the screen is at 20% overall average brightness. What I don't honestly know is how terribly far that is off from normal content. My sense is that's pretty close to normal content, but that there is definitely real content that is somewhat brighter.

Perhaps someone else can chime in though with more specific info.

There is no difference in HDMI cables. If you can see the picture without visible dropouts or sparklies, the cable is working at 100%. No other cable will display a better version of that picture. You're simply wrong if you think there is a better digital cable than one that is already working.

Oh, and by the way if you can't tell, patience is not my strong suit. lol OK guys what else do we know about the vt50 ? how much better will the 3d be ? will there be any 3d adjustments ? and does the vt50 have a full web browser ( i think i read it does , but not sure.)

OK, let's speculate a little bit: In 2 or 3 weeks we will have the first real reports about the entry level models. If they are significantly superior to the entry level models from last year, chances are the VT serie will also be noticeable better.

Is it bad that the 2012 model I'm most excited about is the 55" ET5? I mean... it's NOT a plasma...

Panasonic stated it's 50% brighter with 20% APL material if you read their marketing documentation in detail. Using the past 2 years as reference. I'd probably use Panasonic marketing documentation to wad up and put under your fire logs to start the fire.

Wait until the TV is out for 3-4 months. Then assess it. All of the marketing stuff was created to stir excitement. That's basically the main goal of marketing...

How does that saying go.

Panasonic may release a fantastic TV. But Panasonic's VT50 quotes like "A reference model in both function and picture quality" is what really makes me second guess them... If you actually deliver those goods you *don't* need to make those statements. Everyone else will do it for you But I guess the marketing can't hurt...

Anyway, I hope all of this pans out I need a TV this year...

I take the reference model marketing as a good sign that they may have corrected the color decoding issues.
It makes sense that they would not want to be behind Samsung in accuracy this year since it makes it into the reviews.

I haven't yet found a chart that shows the specifications and features of all three xx50 models on one page. I'm having a tough time deciding which to focus my attention on, and I have a big blank wall right now that needs to be filled soon. Any links to single page comparisons would be most appreciated.

TIA.

QFT. What kind of reference TV has false contouring for 24p? They should either finally fix it this year or ess tee eff ew re: the reference PQ bragging.

Not a complete chart but I came across this on the bottom of the 50ST50 page on Amazon that has a chart for a quick features comparison (no specs) between the VT, GT, ST, UT, XT and U series for 2012. Link

Who said that?

I was just pointing out their recent product history doesn't match to their new bold 2012 marketing statements.

I hope they do deliver on their marketing promises and deliver a reference TV. Like I said, I'll buy one

In the meantime I'll keep a level head on all of the marketing hype and see what people really think once their honeymoon period is over. I.E. 3+ months after they've bought it. Should be some good reviews out by then as well.

There is an excellent comparison of features for all three models at the site of Value Electronics, with similarities and differences. Look at the link for the new 2012 Panasonic models. Also, the site for Panasonic Global has a very detailed description of all the features for all three models.
There are also some preliminary reviews at 'plasma tv buying guide' of the GT50 vs the Samsung E7000 (and first impressions for other models. Also, there is a first impression of the ST50 at TrustedReviews in the UK. The former is a bit more thorough, although I can't vouch for its autenticity.
I hope this helps.

Interesting read. Seems that the improved brightness will translate more to savings on power consumption as most of us here don't pursue torchy pictures.

The reduced "pixel afterglow" and 2500 hz field are what I'm curious about. I experience "rainbows" on my GT30 and am very sensitive to the motion of an image. Perhaps these new specs will improve upon both.

The thing is, it always sounds so exciting at this stage. Hopefully these sets are a step up. I wouldn't be able to afford the 65vt50 til the end of the year, so I guess that's a good thing

I saw that the comparison page says the vt50 has "96hz playback of 24p". Can someone tell me what that means?

I have the same problem with Panasonic plasmas. I don't really understand this. I see more of this "rainbow effect" on a Panasonic than I do on an LG, or Samsung. I'm hoping with the new drive system, and overall panel redesign, the effect is lessened. I actually made a thread about this issue a while back.
