Hey all - long time reader, first time poster.

Hoping you can help me decide which way to go. It boils down to this: I can get a 59" D7000 plasma or a 64" D550 plasma for the same price. I've read that the 7000 has a better picture than the D550, as it should, but I'm not sure how much better the picture actually is.

Generally the rule is go big or go home, so my question is do I get the larger TV at the expense of some picture quality? If the picture on the 7000 really is that much better, then IMO the 5 inches I'd lose is worth the gain in PQ.

To give some background, my current TV is a 42" Panny plasma, so whether I go with the 59" or 64", it'll be a hell of an upgrade.

If anyone has any thoughts or suggestions, I'd love to hear them. Thanks everyone!

If your previous set was a 55" or a 59"/60...I would say get the 64....but....

Coming from a 42" set - both will be immersive. I would get the D7000 as it is a few steps up from the D550.

I was thinking the same thing. My viewing distance is about 10 feet, so I don't know that 5 inches will make that much of a difference. I think at the end of the day, you've got to go with the best picture quality you can get.

Seeing as you currently own a Panasonic, why are you not considering one this time?

Why not get the best of both worlds...???
Get the 64 D550 (what I have) and unlock the calibration to get the d7000 PQ. Only thing missing is the filter (that peels off eventually..known issue) and the smart features. (Just plug in a PS3). SOLVED!

Does D550's black improve to D7000/D8000 level as well? I heard there is an improvement, but I'm not sure it exactly matches D7000/D8000 (especially 59~64 model which has better black than 51 inch model)

The pq improved overall...even compared from my calibrated setting on stock d550 the default hacked version is better. I'm liking it alot now. I'm a Panasonic guy coming from ST30 and IMO its clearer.

At the price point I'm trying to meet, I feel like a 59" Samsung plasma is a better value for me than a 60" Panasonic. The ST30 is nice, but I'm not a fan of the design - the bezel is way too thick. If you look at the actual dimensions of the 59" 7000, it's actually about the same size as a 55" Panasonic. It just seems like Samsung gives you as much screen space as possible. I thought about the GT30 as well, but I keep coming back to Samsungs. I have nothing against Panasonic though - my 2008 42pz85u has treated me very well and still looks great. I just wish they took some tips from Samsung's design department.

That's definitely intriguing - is it confirmed that even after unlocking the calibration, the 550 can match the PQ of the 7000? If so, then that seems like the winner. And by "unlocking the calibration" do you just mean getting normal calibration done by an ISF tech, or is it beyond that?

Regarding the peeling issue - I thought that was corrected with later models? I'd hope that if you had that problem, Samsung would make good on it.

The AR filter on the 6500 is well worth it. I see no reflections even with my blinds rolled all the way up.

There is a thread for unlocking and calibrated settings are also provided within the thread itself. I was debating between 64 d550 and 60 Panasonic GT30, after the unlock my mind was made.
The room I have my TV in is light-controlled as I have drapes in my living room. The filter didn't really apply. Also the smart features isn't important to me I have a PS3 as mentioned as well as the LG Smart upgrader. (Free so y not). If those are factors for you then I'd reconsider.

They did, if you go look at the pics for the 2012 models.

I am well aware that colors are improved. D550 practically unlocks all the color capabilities of D8000, so the colors has to be awesome.

I am specifically asking about MLL only. I am only asking because there are no reviews of 59/64 inch D550s. All the comparisons I could draw was from 51 inch models and indeed D550 and D8000's MLL were pretty much close at 51 inch size.

I still say even with reference colors little better MLLs are still important. I know this because I had my PT350 black tweaked and seriously it blew both VT30 and D8000 out of the water in terms of overall picture quality, and with improved MLL, relatively mediocre colors (for LG) came back to life and even surpassed ST30 which I found amazing because it could not ever before the tweak.
