I just returned my LG 7600 to BB (55'). The glare and reflection was just too much. Why oh why did everyone have to put reflective glass on their screens. I just want to watch some damn TV when I get home. I don't want to close every blind in the house and turn of every lamp within 50 feet so I don't see it reflected back at me.
The PQ on the 7600 was pretty nice even using the factory settings. I am not a TV maven who spends his whole life tweaking every level. A cable box is fine for me. Hell, I just bought a Blue Ray player 3 weeks ago when I bought the TV.
Does anyone here actually have a 9700 or have they seen one in person. Is the screen really "matte" or is it as glossy as any other plasma I see in BB? Anyone got some real world pictures from multiple angles?
I know there are other LEDs out there but I like LG the best because it is dual voltage and 50/60 HZ so it will work in Germany if we go back (a very likely possibility). I also like that LGs swivel so you can angle it for viewing from the kitchen (for example). The 7600 swiveled 10 degrees and the 9700 is supposed to swivel 20 degrees.
I am just so damn nervous about pulling the trigger on the 9700 and being disappointed. Plus having to deal with returns and re-packing. Ughh..Just getting the 7600 back in the box was a 1 hour PITA and my wife was not to pleased with the puzzle of putting it back together.
Thoughts?

I've seen one in person. And I was really torn on which one to buy. The LM8600 or the the PM9700. I went with 8600 and I'm returning it. Too much light bleed. As of your question of matte screen, yes it is really matte screen. It looks like an LCD screen.

Perfect! Many thanks. That sure does look like a nice matte finish to me.

welcome

Last month I ordered the 60" PM970t (UK model), but after the SONY HX853 positive reviews I decided to cancel the PM970t and I went for the 55" HX853.
I do like the matte screen, slim bezel, menu and the remote on the PM970t, Also it plays MKV and it's bigger by 5 more inches.
I can't find any PM970t reviews frown.gif. That's strange.
The 55HX853 will be delivered before 13/07 and if I find good PM970t reviews before the HX853 arrives I might just go back to LG.

Woot! 55 Inch LGPM9700 received 2 hours ago. Ordered from BB on Sunday and arrive Wed afternoon. Very impressed with PQ out of the box. The screen really is matte! The difference in glare/reflection compared to my LG7600 LED I returned is incredible. Well done LG!

I still have to play with some of the settings and try it with Blue Ray but with cable box on the HD channels its very very good.

The jump to 60" from 55" is very noticeable.

$100 less money than the LED too.

No 3D glasses (Active) come with it from Best Buy but I doubt I'll ever watch a 3D movie on it anyways so no big loss.

Speakers are pretty good for TV of this size (with Clear Voice 2 setting) for watching TV. I don't feel compelled to power up the home theatre at all.

Off angle viewing is better than 7600.

The dual voltage thing for me was really important so LG was the only game in town. I'f it wasn't this one, I don't know what I'd do.

Thx for this videos guys.

I know this sounds really stupid but I have never learned how to upload photos to a website and I can't be bothered to register on a hosting (free) site.

I received my 55HX853 and after a week I'm not happy with my set. It's faulty.
Next week I'll return my HX853 and probably order again the 60PM970t or the 60E6500.

Where are the PM9700 reviews??????????????????

The PM9700 was in the latest VE HDTV Shootout. You can see how it fared at the "Value Electronics" website.

Summary: not well.

I am still anxious to read user impressions though. I really like the idea of a semi-matte plasma.

Edit: AVS forum didn't like the link to VE website. Removed.

Seriously considering this model as my first-ever plasma, smart TV, 3D, etc.

I don't know much about TVs, honestly -- this is my first venture into this forum.

I need some feedback from those who have this TV, please.

I found a couple reviews on Amazon citing problems while watching HD through cable box...For example, "Watching high def programing through my cable box was awful. There was so much motion judder, as if the camera would shake during motion. I played with all my settings and nothing corrected this"

The majority of my TV watching will probably be watching HD or standard def programs through my HDR receiver.

Has anyone noticed this?

I plan to put this in a bright room, so the matte-like finish is a plus. I currently have a 4-year-old, 32-inch Toshiba with a matte finish and it works great. The PM9700 also meets my other criteria of smart TV, 3D. I would prefer it passive, but if I have to tradeoff to get the other 3,I think I would do it, such with this TV.

Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I got the 60pm9700 at Frys Saturday after my LG 60pv490 got taken out with a lightning strike. The 60pv490 indeed had blacks that werent very black but I was ok with that for the price I paid. (open box) Many LG plasma reviews lamented their not so good black level performance. Knowing this I went in to Frys thinking I was going to buy the Samsung 60" 7000 series hoping I didnt get one with the often mentioned buzz problem with that series.
I saw the LG 9700 sitting there next to a Samsung 64" 7000 series and indeed the Samsung looked better. The Samsung had a shiny screen of course and the difference of the LG matte finish was very noticeable in the reduction of glare but as mentioned earlier, the picture seemed more bland. I played with the LG settings some and started getting the 9700 to look pretty good. After 2 hours of back and forth I decided to get the 9700. The blacks looked every bit as good as the Samsung and I thought the LG 60pm9700 could be tweaked to a respectable picture.

I get home and put in Bugs Life full BD rip from my htpc. It looked pretty good but the stuttering/motion was terrible. I played with a few settings to no avail which was disheartening because the actual picture quality was getting better with each tweak....mainly turning of "dynamic xxxx" and things of that sort. Ah HA....i can't get "film mode" to come on and realize my htpc is not putting out a 1080/24p signal. I get that sorted...get "film mode" turned on and then OMG......this thing looks fantastic!!!!! No buzzing.....the picture is bright, sharp, rich colors and NO reflections which was a huge gripe from the wife on the first LG. I go through the usuals..Kung Fu Panda, How to Train your Dragon..... with awesome results and decide to put in Friday. This movie has nothing going for it av wise. Well it looked pretty darn good and the wife and I both noticed how much better the pic was vs the 60pv490 it was replacing. Next I watch some Nascar from my 720p outputting tivo with no upscaling from my onkyo. The front bumper cam shots were amazingly smooth and the detail in the asphalt was unexpectedly great.

My conclusion is this. Yes I did see the Pannys and yes they had awesome blacks but the pictures just didnt seem to be as sharp to me. I would rate the lg 60pm9700 as sharper...less reflections by a mile with 85-90% of the blacks of the Pannys. I do not notice the letterbox bars when watching the 9700 at all. The sound from the tv speakers is not great but I would say that no matter what being used to a 9.2 setup from the onkyo. The picture on the other hand is phenomenal and I am definitely impressed with this LG model. Th 9700 alerted me to a software update which I performed last night via the ethernet connection. No problems there though I was ready for a bricked tv from firmware updates you read about over the years. I love this tv! I came home thinking that I may be compromising a little on the picture pop and richness while enjoying the reduced glare but I was wrong. After some general tweaking this thing looks fantastic. I havent played with the included apps much but will try some media streaming for the heck of it and report back.

I know this isnt a professional review but at least it's something. I don't claim to be a videophile but I do see enough to enjoy the superior picture that plasma offers over lcd so take it for what it is worth. It is a really nice set.

This is good to hear! Care to share any of your settings? Would you say the matte screen lowers overall picture quality/brightness, or is it fine after adjusting picture settings?

@cablebandit - thanks for posting your initial impressions. It is much appreciated. Keep us posted as things progress.

Edit: could you please check in the ISF expert mode advanced settings and tell us if this model has 20pt white balance and full CMS (hue, saturation, luminance) controls? Can't find this info on the LG website. It's been "standard equipment" on recent LG plasmas, but would be nice to get verification.

the matte screen is a non issue as far as affecting the picture. I thought it would be but of course they had the APS mode on in the store. Basically my settings are all the extras off...dynamic contrast....super resolution...aps.........and just used the Picture Wizard to tweak the STANDARD mode which then saved it to ISF 1. I saw some settings on another site and will try those in a few and post back the results. It SEEMS that I dont need as much brightness now since Im not having to overcome the glare and reflections that I was before. I hope that makes sense. Before I could literally count the bricks of the retention wall outside my livingroom in the reflection on the tv. Now it is as if there is no window behind our seating position...awesome!

dont do the firmware update! I am reading that it turns on Trumotion no matter what setting you pick (on/off) giving the soap opera effect. I am trying to find out about that now....it is firmware xxx.29 that does this. I can not see any difference with trumotion on or off so i think i may have the same prob though my blurays look awesome. ill update with any info i find.

Yes he said they could send a tech out within the next few days to swap the main board. I told him I would just wait on the firmware since they are aware of the problem. I dont use trumotion or film mode since everything is 24p from my pc to the tv so I just adjusted the GAME mode to my liking since trumotion and film mode are turned off in that setting. Ironically now my wife decides on some movies she LIKES trumotion better....go figure smile.gif I am still very please with the tv....it's actually a brighter picture than I thought it would be with the matte screen.

Lots of complaining about TruMotion problems in all the 2012 LG owners threads. I'm sure they are indeed aware of the issue smile.gif

Does anyone have any real reviews to provide about this TV?

There are just no reviews for 60PM9700

I am looking to buy this and i am comparing this with a Panasonic ST50. How do they both stand?

I'm curious just how matte is this screen? Is it pretty much the same as a matte lcd screen? I haven't seen one in the store yet.

Also any issues with IR on this set?

Thanks,

I feel pretty comfortable saying that the ST50 would come out ahead on picture quality. This is based on the HDTV shootout results between the PM9700 and the VT50, and what I've read about how the ST50 compares to the VT50.

That said, I've still got my eye on the PM9700 because of the matte screen. smile.gif I would really like to switch back to plasma.

wow what a fun time with LG online chat support. The 60PM9700 does not have TruMotion......that is for their other tvs. Yes it is in the menu and even in the user guide that is installed by the factory on the tv. It is some kind of f'd up firmware isssue. They are coming friday to check mine out and install a new main board i assume. It took a few minutes to convince them that it indeed was an option in my menu because it doesnt offer Trumotion. Look up specs and features anywhere for this tv and you will see it to not be mentioned EVER......not in the manual either. With that being said...this tv is AWESOME. I am loving it and do not regret not getting the Panny. The 3d looks great and the Matte screen kills 90% of the glare without hurting the picture brightness. I would buy this tv again without hesitation.
