I'm probably going to get an ST50, but want to consider some back ups. What are the equivalent 2012 plasmas from LG and Samsung that match quality with similar price as an 50 or 55 inch ST50.

I don't think either of these makers offer any models that can fully compete.

The Samsung PN**E6500 would be the level of the ST50. I doubt it's the equal in picture though but we've only seen a couple of reviews so far.
I have a friend that had the E6500 and exchanged it for the ST50. He is very happy with his ST50

So would the E7000 and E8000 be a higher level than the ST50 because they'd have a better picture, or because they have better features, or both? (And I realize that there are no professional reviews yet of the Samsungs, so maybe an unfair question.)

I could guess but I really would like to read a couple of reviews and get more feedback from owners. I'm just going by model levels and cost.

How about one thread instead of 3+ to help you decide on your ST50 purchase? Just pull the trigger already!

How about making sure everything is covered before buying an expensive product. Sorry I'm paranoid about my purchases. Seems like Panasonic new 2012 lineup is the way to go.

The most likely LG would be the PM6700 - it also offers 3D, and has a much larger array of user controls than the ST50, including LG's "Picture Wizard," and user accessible ISFccc modes.

Unfortunately, have not seen any "professional" reviews of the 6700 yet, but the 2D only PA6500 looks impressively bright in person, although apparent black levels varied widely on the examples we've seen.

Based upon a single calibration report - of the 6500 - would expect the LG to give you better Color, OOTB, than the ST50, but the black level on the Pan clearly trumps the 6500, and presumably that advantage would also apply against the 6700. And the LGs tend to have very reflective screens - the 6500 seemed on about the same level as Pans UT50.

Still, the excellent color, user controls, & feature set - at very competitive pricing - makes the LG panels worth taking a peek at.

Samsung E7000s and E8000s might be subjectively superior to the ST50/GT50 for those with brightly lit rooms if the 2011 models' performance is any prediction. I own the D7000 and GT30 and the D7000 does a much better of perserving blacks during the day. At night in a dark room, the GT30 wears the yellow jersey.

I got the 50ST50 a month ago (already?)...my suggestion go as big as you can afford, within the day I was wishing I had the 55 or 60. This is from someone that upgraded from a 32" LCD.

I'm probably going to shoot for the 55 if prices come down.

Well this is the same question I have. 60PM6700 v 55ST50 vs PN60e6500. I can tell you that for price the LG has so far been the lowest. However I've only read one review somewhere here in AVS by Chad from Cleveland Plasma - it was not very favorable. He is suppossed to compare the PM vs ST head-to-head...still waiting on that comparison. As you know the ST50 is the darling of all professional reviews so far. I am yet to see a bad review on this panel aside from televison info which only gave it a less than stellar review and some think that it was biased. The one thing I read about the Panny ST (found it today actually) is there are some complaints about IR. Until today I had not found any negatives towards the Panny. Now the Sammy - the thing about the sammy is the buzzing - seems like hit or miss. PQ should be great but to keep it in the same price range you drop down to a 51" panel as oppossed to 55" or 60". I am very hesitant to go for the LG at the moment. After reading its thread here - it's nothing but issues about firmware updates (LG's as a whole...) not correcting problems and creating a soap opera effect that cannot be controlled - also a fairly reflective screen after seeing it in person at the store compared to the Panny, but the again we are talking 60" rolleyes.gif
so far I am leaning ST but not sold yet. If one of these sets comes bundled w/ BR Player or sound bar then all bets are off biggrin.gif

I agree. I upgraded from a 32" LCD to a 50ST50 but the 50ST50 looks big since I'm sitting 7.5 feet away and the room is very small.

I know way too many people that buy 46" tvs for living rooms where they are sitting 11 feet away and then get used to the size within a day or 2 and are bummed. The average full size home living room would probably need at least a 60" tv to be really impressive and if I was sitting 11ft away I would want a 65" easily.

I like the upper end of the THX Screen Size Recommended Range for everyday viewing.

THX Screen Size Recommended Range
35" 3.5' – 5.0' (1.0 – 1.5 m)
40" 4.0' – 6.0' (1.2 – 1.8 m)
50" 5' – 7.5' (1.5 – 2.2 m)
60" 6.0' – 9.0' (1.8 – 2.7 m)

I got the ST50 about two weeks ago and there is no IR that I can see. I watch all different sorts of programing and source material. I cant find any burn in or IR or whatever , really happy with the ST50. Cant beat value for price in my opinion and the opinion of a lot of professional reviewers.

How about Sammy PN60e550? Or perhaps the PN59D7000? The 7000 is last year's model but it was regarded as one of (if not) THE best plasma of 2011 for PQ/value/features. Probably the same title the ST will earn for 2012.

Would these models be a fair comparison for the ST50?

I believe Samsung's E550 models are closer in comparison to Panasonic's UT50 models, one step below the ST50.
Samsung's E6500 models are closest to compare to the Panasonic ST50.
The 2011 Samsung models reportedly had fluctuating black issues and some buzzing, but they were high rated displays if you can find one that has no issues that might concern you.
The 2012 Panasonic plasmas however are rated as brighter than the 2011 or 2012 Samsungs if thats important to you.
