The picture quality of Life of Pi was spectacular on my VT50, but the movie fell short of my expectations.

It was certainly a lofty undertaking given the source material, but I guess that discussion is better suited for the review thread.

Just over 50 hours on my slides now....this is killing me!! Kind of like going out and buying a new sports car, parking it in the garage and staring at it and waiting 4 days before driving it!!

The D-Nice settings are nice to have, but not a panacea. They produced too much red and yellow in my display, for example. Don't go crazy running slides exclusively. Watch your TV, that's what it's for.

Wanted to chime in, I came here from Elite 70" that I constantly tweaked, calibrated and tweaked again, tried someone else's settings and still no good. When I got VT50 I just did basic adjustments of color, tint, brightness and contrast and just watch and watch and the picture is absolutely to my liking. Have not even touched CMS. I am more than picky when it comes to PQ and VT50 just delivers. Life of Pi being an uninteresting content does have amazing PQ on uncalibrated VT50 and I am torn if pro calibration will make it superbly better or simply duller but true smile.gif)

I didn't run the slides. The second set of D-Nice settings that are posted over at the control cal forums look really, really good on my TV. His posted settings for the slides are too dark on my TV and there's too much red. Nothing negative about his settings, it's just that as is constantly stated, settings will vary sometimes greatly from TV to TV.

Looky here!

... and as D-Nice has repeated many times, his settings are not a substitution for a professional calibration. They are at best, a good starting point.

Calibration won't make it duller unless you're used to really pumped up settings, like vivid mode. ISF Day mode especially can have tons of pop.
If you do decide to go the pro cal route I will be in IL with quick stops in IA and WI next week.

Chad. Talked to your wife. Was trying to get you squeezed in, but we are in Vegas from the 19th to the 28th. She said you won't be back this way until June ish. If you can overrule her and be here the 18th or 29th, that would be great! Was watching American idol. Swapped out my gt30 just now with the vt50 with dnice settings and looks ABSOLUTEY fantastic!

Can you explain what you're trying to say in more objective terms? You like 96hz? My experience has been 48hz is terrible, 96hz is better, but 60hz looks the best on my VT50.

I have noticed that the majority of the "settings" talk in this thread is in regards to picture settings and professional calibrations. Is there a master list of optimum settings for all of the menu item features? I understand to each his own based on intent, audio (avr), other devices in the setup, but I'd like to know what other users are configuring all of their other menu settings to also. I'd like the best technical performance and viewing experience for this set, in conjunction with the ideal resolutions so highly talked about in this thread. Is there a master list of other menu item/s/features, line itme by line item, to help achieve reference levels the way the contet was meant to be viewed?

Thanks,

DtF

Or if you want the best of the best in terms of Calibration, I would suggest you read at-least these two threads.

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1462960/eecolor-processor-calman-3d-luts

http://www.avsforum.com/t/1461363/ee-colorbox-lightspace-and-3d-lut-calibration

I am running a 3D (not stereo) cube LUT 16^3 calibration as I type. This is the cutting edge (holy grail) for calibrations.
You don't have to be a DIY calibrator, you can hire a pro calibrator that really knows how to do this cutting edge calibration and has the tools to do it.
However you will need something like a eecolor-processor that can hold and process this type of calibration.
The only pro calibrator that I know of that does this type of calibration is Buzz, he also sells the eecolor box-processor at the cheapest price I have ever seen.

ss

btw, if you are a DIY calibrator and are using the Radiance Mini 3D to do a 5^3 LUT calibration your calibration is still very good. However if you go to the very large LUT calibration your Mini can serve very nicely as a triplet pattern generator, as it does for the 5^3 LUT calibrations. .

Have you been able to determine that the 16^3 is any better than the 5^3?

See the link in my signature area.

I'm not referring to the ISF picture settings, but also all of the other feature settings.

C.A.T.S. On or Off?
Video NR Off/Weak/Medium/Strong/Auto?
HDMI Settings?
Content Type?
Block NR On/Off/Auto?
Mosquito NR
Motion Smoother

ECO/Energy Saving
VIERA Link Settings
VIERA Connect Banner On/Off

These type of settings. If I'm not able to squeeze from my budget (or convince the wife of) a Professional Calibration I "read all about", and I'm using some of the shared settings from this thread or D-Nice's posted settings, maybe there are some users that are open to discussion and sharing of thoughts on these other settings.
