Would you buy a 2013 Panasonic plasma if it was the last year for them?

Sure, why not?

Last year there were people saying there was no way they would improve in 2012. lol The 2013s are already essentially designed. I don't expect drastic improvements from last year, but some improvements in some areas none the less.

Of course, we should find out for sure during CES. But I think 70" is the largest that anyone can realistically hope for. I think the market is just too small for expensive, 75" plasmas.

I agree. 70" seems to be the logical replacement size for my 50" KURO. I hope Panasonic comes through with such a model and size. 60" isn't enough of an upgrade and anything larger than 70" gets pricey for me. The only other choice it seems for plasma people would be Samsung but I've never been overly enamored with their sets and I'm not sure if I could buy one. What I do know is that LCD is still just not gonna work for me. Maybe the high end Sony HBX line would but I ain't paying those prices!

I could justify the jump from 55 to 60 if the PQ is improved appreciably (Kuro blacks?) and the price is right. I'd have to sell my new VT50 first though. Any guess as to the used market value come March?

The used market is tough on sellers. I seem to recall people getting about half of what they paid for their 65VT30s when they sold them off earlier this year....perhaps others can chime in.

Hopefully they've changed some of the materials so that all the Kuro stuff they have works well with neopdp tech.

xrox, what do you think? separate initialization cell for 2013? Changing to SrZrO to allow CEL to work because of the high Xenon gas content for neopdp?

Sure would. That being said, 2013 IMO is just another incremental advance. Panasonic has done a good job since 2010 making baby steps and killing off the nagging issues like floating blacks and rising blacks. 2012 models were very good, I expect the 2013 models to be a smidge better. Reduced MLL and improved filtering would be a fine start.

I am sure no one purchased a pioneer knowing it was their last year of producing plasmas, right? I purchased a FS 5020 from best buy to go along with my 8th. gen. elite...I know the 5020 is not an elite...but it beats a lot of TV's that are being shown right now.

Great post! Looking the 60", and stuck between the UT, ST & GT

Everyone says the GT is the best (well from the price it should be!)

I have not seen an ST, but my understanding is it is the same as the GT but not calibrated (I assume and hope more, as there is about a $500 price jump)

I have seen UT and GT and both look great. They were not beside each other, so was very hard to compare.

Can you really see the difference??

What can I bring to the store to really test and show the differences?? Particular movie or ???

That articles says "weighs whether" to cease research. Old news, there is a Panasonic insider on HDJ that says the exit from Plasma display manufacturing is too early to speculate.

He's hardly going to come out and say "I think that we are getting out of TV all together" now is he?

The president of Panasonic said they are going to look at what divisions are in the black first half of next year and dump non-profit making divisions. TV hasn't made any money for the last 3 years, doesn't look good IMHO.

If people believe they are leaving the plasma market that soon, they haven't been paying attention to what industry insiders have been saying about it.

Mourning the disappearing usage of the -ly suffix. Words being cut-off before they've had a chance to fully form, left incomplete, with their shoelaces untied and their zippers undone. If I quote your post (or post in your thread) without comment, please check your zipper.

That is why they have been improving their plasmas and LCDs year after year - using new phosphors for 2013 - and pouring money into OLED - all to get out of the TV business in a year. Sure. Keep smoking....errr...eating that weed!

I don't think they will be out of the tv business. They may abandon plasma in favour of a newer technology, like OLED, maybe.

I think we've seen the best plasma television can offer at a reasonable cost. Pioneer priced itself out of the market. Panasonic has been sitting on the technology for a few years now, giving incremental changes to its models. They are apparently not yet to Kuro quality, not by lack of means, but by lack of financial return: there's not enough people willing to pay 6000$ for a tv. So a 2500$ tv has to make some compromises. This forum is packed by hardcore users, so it's kinda skewed toward the big elite models.

So if Panasonic plans to stop plasma research, it's because they found another niche wich they think they can exploit. That means they'll keep producing tvs for a few years after their research is done, they probably have enough "new" technologies to produce fair priced plasma tvs for a few years, wich will give them time to create fair priced tv of better or equal quality to their current plasma line with a newer tech that has some future. they might even start introducing these lines parallel to plasma, for the bigger models by 2014-2015, wich will gradually replace plasma as it is phased out.

The demographics are changing. I wrote extensively about this in another thread. The now and the future is in mobile. Santa Monica, NY, SF and other cities are passing ordinances for construction of apartments as small as 200 sq.ft. Panasonic should've gotten out years ago. They've done nothing but lose money. Anything new you see is the execution of plans developed years ago. Takes years to make and execute R&D, manufacturing and only a very short time to stop them.

Businesses are in business to make money not to provide money losing novelties. Panny is a business losing money making TV's. Finally just because something is new doesn't mean it'll be better. People buying 1st gen tech from a company losing money are it's beta testers....and they'd better hope the support is there. What if new means materials that are of less quality but give a larger margin?

The VT50 panel is fully optimized.
