Not exactly right....unless I'm mistaken, the VT50 matched the Kuro 8G black levels. 9G black levels have not yet been reached (otherwise I might have traded my 50" Kuro for a larger Panny by now).

Well, I guess we'll learn something tomorrow? I'll need a translation of the tech talk to "layman". Thanks in advance. smile.gif

Vinnie, I own both (9G and VT) and have owned the 8G. The 8G was about 80% lighter than the 9G. The VT50 is so close to the 9G I can't tell the difference...except the VT crushes the blacks a litle bit.

"Black levels were the best I’ve seen on a plasma since the last generation of Kuros, and I would venture to say any remaining differences in black levels between the 60” 9G Kuro and the 65VT50 would be extremely hard to see except during direct comparisons of mostly black screens in a very dark room. Shadow detail was excellent, with dark objects appearing to be about the right brightness and very neutral in color tone."

https://clevelandplasma.com/store/2012_television_reviews/panasonic_tc_pxxvt50

The colors and the whites are superior on the VT. However one of the nice things about the Kuro was that I could heat up the room on a winters day with it and I can't with the VT.

Would I buy a 65" Kuro if it was able to meet modern energy/eco mandates and be a slim as the VT? Yes. The Kuro has a litle extra something but I'm not goimg to pay someone $3200 for a 3-4 year old TV even if they tell it was "lightly used in a smoke free environment" until they're blue in the face.

I seem to remember discussions among people in the know where they were saying the VT50 pretty much matched the 9G Kuro black levels but not quite matching the 9.5G KRP Kuro's black levels. I also remember D-Nice saying the VT50 is the first TV that would be an acceptable replacement for his Kuros should they die. I'd say the VT50 is close enough wink.gif

I have the Pro-111fd Elite. Not sure if that's 9G or 9.5G.

That's fine. wink.gif I need to see the exact values for 8G, 9G, 9.5G, and the VT50 to be sure...but returns are definitely diminishing and probably not all that detectable unless the sets are side by side. My recollection of the levels from worse to best are 8G --> VT50 --> 9G --> 9.5G. I do know that some folks here claimed they could see more black detail in the 9.5G versus 9G in the past, but that is a subjective observation more than anything.

And yes, I remember D-Nice's claim, Randy. It's a ringing endorsement if there ever was one.

And Glash, you can actually verify the hours of usage if you were to consider a used TV (not something I said I would ever consider, btw, especially with a VT60 right around the corner tongue.gif).

9/9.5G Kuros measure 0.0005 or less, while the VT50 measures 0.0018-0.002. I believe the 9G Kuros measure ~0.0005 and the 9.5G Kuros measure ~0.0001. The differences in black levels would be fairly easy to see in low APL content (black or mostly black screens) in a dark room, but every other condition, they will look fairly similar.

^Thanks for the confirmation that I'm not making things up or going crazy. And I do all "serious" viewing in a dark room. I sincerely hope Panasonic can pull off 0.0005 with the 2013 line.

I might be a little crazy, but I could definitely see the 500m having room for improvement in the black level department amazingly.

It's really the dark room environment where OLED is going to shine, because the brightness and filter for Panasonic is excellent at this point. Viewing with low level light is going to make is seem like a wash between the two. I think we'll all be surprised how close they are if an OLED v. VT60 match up at the shootout happens this year.

is the VT60 series of 65" plasmas expected to be announced today?

i'm debating between the 65VT50 or the 65VT60, and we're right at the cusp, time wise, of the model change!

yikes, always something with each purchase!

is this the best thread to get the VT60 announcement news?

Always something new/different/supposedly better around the corner. I chose to go with the VT50 until the VT60 has been vetted for issues and problems. Can always get a VT60 in December if there are no problems and sell the VT50. But there we are again....will the VT70 be better? Should I wait??? biggrin.gif

so whats the thought, jump on a cheap VT50 or wait for the VT60/ZT60s.

I don't give a crap about all the smart TV features, I have a highend HTPC, just care about picture quality and glare reduction.

I agree. I dont know if I should cancel my GT50 and wait for the 2013 or just keep it. I dont care about those smart features either, I just care about if the picture is better and maybe even if the IR is not as bad on hte 2013s

GT series is gone, so you would be talking about a considerable increase in price.

Though I am an employee of Magnolia Home Theater, the views and opinions I express on this forum are those of my own and not my employer.

I would just go with the ST. I was going to get the ST this time, but the GT was only $100 so I got it.

IMO if Panny had anything new and revolutionary to say about the panels meeting or beating Kuros we'd be hearing all about it. But nothing from them except about "features". I wouldn't hold my breath either. The awards and such were for their LCD improvements/displays.

Wondering if the ZT will be priced closer to the flagship Sharp LCD? Will the ZT offer a step up in PQ or will it include only gimmicks and gadgets?

I hope so. I hope Ultimate black color isn't another Panny marketing term like Beyond Black, Ultra Black, etc.

ok, so they're dropping GT. If this results in VT staying at the same price at it is right now and ZT will be priced into the moon because it's the new flagship set, that decision doesn't make sense to me, even more so that Panny is in the red.

Now, if all the features of VT will retain the same and the price goes down to GT range than it will be awesome and would make more sense.. and to me, personally, if VT could be available in 50" that would finally make me go out and get it.

It will probably be the latter and the GT price will also probably be passed to the ST sets.
