I'm trying to buy a 42" Panasonic plasma for my daughter but can't find any. Panasonic shows a UT50 on their website but no price. They don't even show a ST50 in 42"s. Could someone explain the situation?

Panasonic discontinued the North America 42" UT50 earlier this year and didn't produce a 42" ST50.
Their plasmas from UT50 and above start at 50" size now.
Only the lowest end 720p plasmas are available in a smaller 42" size now.
LCDs/LEDs have pretty much taken over the sub-50" size on TVs.
There were some good quality 42" and 46" size plasmas in 2010 and 2011, but not anymore for 2012 - would have to look for a used one.

I don't know if they made a 42" ST50, but I think not..

Here in Europe we have the 42 GT50, so If you really can't find what are you looking for, I suggest you to buy from an european site^^
You'll definitely find it.

You'll probably have to settle for an LCD/LED if you want 42", unless you don't mind getting an older plasma model. The Samsung EH6000 series and the Toshiba L5200 series are both viable options, unless you can find the UT50 somewhere (that would be the better choice but it's not available anymore).

I was looking at Craigslist in my daughter's area and found quite a few flats in the 42-46" range, around two years old, that were around $300 to $400. Most of them were originally around $800. New 42 to 46" flats of any quality seem to be around $600 minimum. The reasons for selling were either moving across country by young person or upgrading to larger screen. Not a bad idea, don't you think?

You can get a new Samsung 43" 720 plasma for $399 to $450, better idea.

Good point, the Samsung PN43E450 isn't a bad set at all, especially for that price (you can also take a look at the Samsung PN43D450). If you do find a better plasma on Craigslist, I don't see the problem with going for that either, as long as you're certain that it still functions well.

Buying used is risky if there's no warranty left. Also can warranty still be used if it's another owner.
