They ain't bright ...

Plasma whites aren't LCD - LED whites ... hockey can look dim ...sometimes grey - why is this ? why can't they get WHITE ? like the screen I'm typing on now is ..WHITE , bright & vibrant ...

They seem to do Sports real well .... movies is where they shine - just really beautiful PQ ....even on some lesser Plasma's ...

Am I correct in saying that the Videophile - the CNET guy ...aren't sports fans ...aren't ESPN fans...aren't big regular HDTV fans ....but more the kinda guy who watches 10+Blu Rays a week ?

Right ?

So when we read these glowing reviews about Plasma's ...about their black levels etc...these are basically the views of film buffs correct?

So in theory is it really fair to just assume they're correct in naming "fill in the blank Panny Plasma " the best PQ every year? based on what ? Blu Ray?

Is it me doesn't THX mode make sports etc look terrible? dark ? dim? I'm not being negative , I just want to know, am I not appreciative of the colors?>

I do have 20/30 vision , so I have eyesight aided by glasses and I know we all see different.

I was in BB today mulling and mulling...staring at a VT50 and a GT50 and my eye always drifted to the LED on a white scene ....I believe it was the Panny LED....

Maybe I'm a moth eek.gif

And yet if you actually went to a hockey game you would see that the ice isn't Ultra Pure White.

They probably use Blu-ray to judge the sets as cable/sat aren't the best sources. An accurate picture is an accurate picture, doesn't matter what you're watching. And as has been said a million times you are comparing the room as well when you look at TVs and listen to speakers in department stores, at home they will be much different. NTM Source and calibration.

Think of it this way.

A boob with tatoos and a baseball cap laughs and says "Hah! My Corvette am quicker than your Ferrari!"

The guy with the Ferrari smiles, leaves the room and laughs his a** off.

RicFlair,

The way your eyes perceive an object is heavily dependent on the surrounding environment. The reason LCDs look "white" is simply because it's much brighter than anything else in the room. Put a bright object in a dark room and it'll look super bright. Put it in a very bright environment (outdoors) and it'll look dim.

If you go to hockey game, because there is so much white, your eyes adjust and then suddenly the ice doesn't look as white it does on a TV. Also, it's not just the brightness that is affected, even the color of an object can change will put against a different colored background (optical illusion).

Viewing in a dark room means nothing else can affect how your eyes see the display, so reviewers generally evaluate picture quality based on how it performs in a dark room. It's the most unbiased way -- they are evaluating the display and not the display + environment.

This has nothing to do with the source of the material. It can be a hockey game or it can be blu-ray. Or it can be a blu-ray that's showing a hockey game smile.gif

+1

Both technologies have their pros and cons. To make a statement that because you prefer watching hockey on an LED, that is the best HDTV available, is just plain ridiculous. I guess the CNET guys (and most professional reviewers) prefer the more accurate overall PQ, which is plasma. And many require good side angle viewing in their veiwing room (which is just not very good with all LCDs/LEDs). If you prefer LED over plasma, then get an LED (and hang out at the LED forum).

Have you looked at the price of Corvette's lately? I don't think your example buyer applies, especially now that idiots can't mortgage their house to the hilt. A V6 Mustang perhaps?

I was in BB Magnolia the other day, and this woman asks the sales clerk "What's the matter with this one?", pointing to one of two identical LED TVs mounted on the wall, one over the other. He said "It's calibrated."

'Nuff said.

Honestly, just buy what you want. You're not seeing calibrated sets though so you're not seeing what eithe led or plasma is really capable of. Brightness doesn't equal whiteness.

On the st50 my white is white. Is the light output as much as an led, probably not.

You do know that you can crush white correct? As in the white is so white you see no fine detail.

But please you keep slamming the Panny Plasmas left and right. Just buy a set and hire a pro. Calibrator you'll get a great picture either way.

there is one thing nobody has mentioned despite 13 replies... ABL

a full white field on a plasma is always much dimmer than a small window... however, a full white field is just as bright as a small window on a LED/LCD

this will be noticeable when comparing the two techs side by side (even if both are fully calibrated and set to 35 fL or whatever), especially with content that has a lot of white across the whole screen (like with a hockey game)

however, this doesn't mean hockey looks bad on a plasma... I'm not saying that at all, just that it can appear noticeably brighter on a LED/LCD

Trust your eyes and buy what pleases them but take note of the surroundings in a store unless you're living room is going to be lit up like the department store your results will differ.
Try and do comparison shopping in an actual lighting environment such as the Magnolia section of BB or a dedicated AV store.
Again to all those worried about burn in and IR take the settings off of torch mode and enjoy thats what I have done with every TV that I have owned.

I think generally it looks very nice. Of course, if your monitor is not properly adjusted (I am not talking calibration here) and is completely out of whack then I can well understand that you perceive it as being horrendous.

Ice..again taken with an iPhone so expect to lose detail in e dark do to the wonky sensor. I'm not breaking out the dslr to make my point as anyone with two eyes, an iPhone and an st50 knows what this would look like in person.

The TV with that picture is not calibrated at all. Looks awful. Yeah THX standards are made up. They're made up to promote consistency across devices to replicate a certain standard.

I don't purchase a device because it's THX certified. But you can bet your butt my 65ST50 looks better than any LCD-LED on your wall.

Why do you post in the plasma forum for over a year if you think they're such garbage? Why waste the time?
