I bought a 65VT30 a couple months ago and absolutely love the picture ... with one big caveat. While watching the tv it sometimes just goes very dark. In other words a picture which was as perfect as I would want it suddenly becomes so dark it's hard to see. I've been reading this and other forums for over an hour now and see lots of threads and comments about "fluctuating brightness", which sounds exactly like what I have. But I have yet to find a simple explanation of what "fluctuating brightness" is to see if it is what I'm experiencing. More importantly after reading for quite some time now I have yet to find an explanation or possible solution.

Is there anyone out there that is up to speed on this issue that can help me out with a simple summary of what the problem is (is that what I'm seeing in my tv) and what, if anything, I should be looking to do to fix it.

You can read about fluctuating brightness in my signature, though what you are describing does not sound like fluctuating brightness.
