Hey guys,
while searching for a new TV, I stumbled across this forum. I've read through some of the threads here and I believe this is the right place to ask my questions. I hope you can help me deciding which TV I should buy.

As you can see from the title, I'm thinking about getting the Panasonic 42GT50 or the Samsung 51E6500. The GT50 recieved very good reviews on every site I've read, so I chose it as a favorite (the 50GT50 is still too expensive for me, though). However, the Samsung 51E6500 seems to be very good too, some reviews declared it even better than the GT50. It's also the same price as the 42GT50, but it has a bigger screen, so it's a big favorite of mine, too.

So now I'm unsure which of the 2 TVs would be better for me. Gaming doesn't interest me at all, I would mainly use the TV for watching movies.
Even though I'm expanding my Blu-Ray collection, I've still got lots of DVDs, so the TV should handle SD-stuff without problems.
I've heard the Samsung can handle SD-stuff better. Is that true? Also, the Panasonics seem to have problems with Crosstalk and Ghosting when watching 3D. Is the Samsung better in this department, too?

So, which of the both TVs would you recommend to me?

The GT50 doesn't come in the 42 inch size smile.gif if you are comparing 50 vs 51 inches both of these sets would be good choices. I do believe the blacks on the smaller Samsungs aren't as good as the larger sizes. The Samsung does handle SD better in most cases. The 3d performance is pretty close on both sets.

Okay, so I assume 3D is fine on both TVs. Are the black levels on the Samsung visibly worse than the GT50's or is the difference rather small?

Oh sorry smile.gif welcome to the forum, I think the black levels are better on the Panny but it is not a huge difference. Yes from what I have heard 3d is good on both sets.

The black levels are noticeably worse on the 51" than on the Panasonics. Think 0.015 fL for the former as opposed to say 0.003 fL. The 60" and larger Samsungs are much closer to the black levels of the Panasonics. Black level and resulting contrast ratio are very important but not the end-all and be-all. In any event, here are UK reviews of both TVs:

Well, that's not good to hear. The 60" Samsung isn't an alternative for me, because it is too big and too expensive. Does the Samsung has any other advantages over the Panasonic GT50, besides handling SD-stuff better? Is it brighter than the Panasonic?

I gave you links to two reviews from a highly respected UK site. For the most part, the European models will be very similar to the UK ones. You will find your answers in those reviews I believe.

In the UK, the Samsung 51" E6500 can be bought for £665.

I'm considering this or the Panasonic GT50. Not sure whether I want 42" or 50" in the Panasonic. The 42" is £999. The "50 is £1199.

I've read lots of reviews but remain undecided. I'm not convinced by the Samsung but can't ignore the price difference between this and the GTs.

I don't like the grey/crystal frame border on the STs, so that's ruled them out.

Is the Samsung overrated?

I can't stretch to the 60" Samsung, so the above ones are my only real choices. But I'm not sure which to go for.

Any help or advice welcome!

Thanks.

You might check the pricing on the Samsung PN51E7000. Here in the USA the E7000 is less expensive then the E6500.

I don't think that model is available in the UK?

Is it a 2012 tv?

Thanks
