Hey folks,

I just wanted to add my experience on this problem, and being a UK-based VT50 owner, hopefully it will help others in the same situation over here...

I bought a P65VT50 in Jan 2013, and started seeing the yellow blob issue a few months later, though it didn't get noticeably bad until around late October. I was keeping an eye on this thread ever since noticing it though, and sort of knew that I'd have to get it looked at sooner or later. At some point I decided enough was enough, and got in touch with Panasonic...

This was back in late November and after a couple of calls I got through to the right person at Babber Electronics (London service centre for Panasonic), who was quite direct and honest with me. We decided to delay the service call-out until after the Christmas period due to possible delays in getting any parts they might need for the repair - and since I have a 5-year warranty on the set (and the TV was otherwise still working fine), the extra delay was not a make-or-break issue for me...

They duly collected my TV for repair (I timed it so this would happen while I was away for a couple of weeks), and I got an email from them around a week later saying they need to "order some parts" from Panasonic, but didn't have any idea on how long that would take. A couple of days later I received a voicemail from Panasonic saying they would be replacing my TV with a new one since the parts that were ordered would not be available until March at the earliest (I later confirmed with Babber that the "parts" were in fact a new panel).

I was already a happy camper at this point, and even more so when Babber confirmed that I'd be getting a VT65B as they couldn't find stock of the same model I had (awww shucks!)! smile.gif A few days later my shiny new screen arrived, and life is finally back to normal in the house... I guess it's off to the VT65 forum threads for me now...

So not all doom and gloom over here even though the weather has been quite doomy and gloomy...

I hope others have a smooth experience like I did!

A

^^ Congrats! I was hoping for a VT60 as a replacement, but so far (as I've written above) the panel replacement appears to be successful. Only time will tell if the blobs return at some point. Hoping not!

I would say that THX Cinema is the next best thing to a custom calibration in the ISF modes. You can use a calibration DVD to personalize your contrast and brightness. There at an unlimited supply of opinionated "experts" on this topic.

That's exactly what I did with my VT60 up until Chad B calibrated it (which did make a big improvement).

Here is the before and after result if anyone is curious between THX Cinema vs pro cal on my unit. I had about 400 hours on the display before it was cal'd.

Thought you weren't supposed to touch contrast and such until a number of hundred hours?

You just want to avoid high contrast and brightness. Of course you can touch theses settings. If you set them with the WOW or Spears and Munsil disc I'm sure you'll be safe.

I will add that I do run break-in slides for a good portion of the first 100-200 hours and avoid any non-transparent channel logos as well as "news ticker" channels like CNN and ESPN during that period. I display a lot of HBO and use picture size 1 (overscan) to make sure I'm filling the screen. Once you get past a few hundred hours of this, you should be in pretty good shape for your calibration (optional) and the normal life of your panel.

And yes, I am on Chad's schedule to come back and calibrate this replacement panel in April or May whenever he does his southern tour cool.gif

Just the plasma panel. All boards, connectors and other hardware had to come off the old panel.

I have found the thx cinema to be the best for yellow blobs. I have calibrated the greyscale in the service menu and have very good deltas overall. The gamma is not quite a straight line, but with plasmas the duty is still out on gamma calibrations with different window sizes etc.

I use this setting always now and I think people worry about it because the pixel orbiter is disabled.

After my blob fix this setting is the best as i can still detect a faint blob on normal or bright room. My pro modes are inhibited and have awful blacks so I don't use.

So who knows maybe there is something in using gamma to help the blobs. People have said they show up at certain grey levels more.

I have to say that any traces of my yellow blob issue were resolved by a CHAD B calibration

in case anyone here doesn't already know, he is simply amazing

That's interesting. My blobs showed up after (but unrelated I'm sure) to my Chad B calibration. Had they have been there before the calibration perhaps he could have worked them out of the display. Are you saying getting rid of the blobs was something that Chad was focused on as part of his calibration process, or are you saying that this was a side benefit of the calibration. if the former, this is the first time I've heard of someone removing blobs with a calibration!

Side benefit

It was his opinion that my blobs were not that bad compared to others that he saw

he was well aware of that the fact I had blobs but after he was done they are barely noticeable, if at all.

They were only mildly noticeable during hockey games for me anyway beforehand

Looking forward to Chad's return to North Texas to calibrate my new, "blobless" panel. This has been quite a journey. I just completed the Panasonic post-service online survey and very clearly articulated my disappointment with the warranty process while at the same time letting them know that the service company that was ultimately chosen to replace the panel did a great job.

Congrats. Closing in on close to 300 hours on the new panel and it looks great. Not only are my blobs gone, but I'm convinced that while the blobs were very obvious, there was probably some inconsistency in the whites throughout the panel. This one has much better whites. She's a keeper!

Hey guys I'm gonna try to keep this short and quick....

Purchased my 65VT50 from Best Buy back in Nov. 2012. I than bought the Costco Square trade warranty and registered. Than it went on sale in Jan. at Adorama. Best Buy refused to honor the price match so I ordered the same set from Adorama. Adorama set arrives,I didn't want to bother switching sets and returned the unopened box set to Best Buy for a full refund. I never thought I'd actually have to use the warranty. I had so much faith in Panasonic....and now of course I have the yellow blobs.

So now the dilemma. I still have the Best Buy set. Serial numbers match Square trade registry. I called today to file a claim and told them exactly the truth. They said they could not transfer warrantys since I now have a defective TV and I could call Costco to get refund on the warranty, at which point I immediately hung up. Should I call back and try to file a claim again and lie this time? The TV's serial numbers DO match afterall....

The sad part about all of this is I found the defects BEFORE the manufacturer warranty ended and I never bothered to google until now. frown.gif

I have been experiencing these yellow/green blobs for about 6 months.

I bought the 55VT50 around July '12 and I have 2 yellow blobs on each side of the TV that are extremely noticeable on white screens and it looks they ruin the screen uniformity in all black scenes where the blobs are significantly lighter than the rest of the screen.

My 2 year warranty expires in few months so I'm wondering if it would worth my while to have Best Buy send a guy out. Is this a legit issue and is it even possible to get the parts anymore? What are the chances of them just denying the warranty?

Can someone direct me to a 12v feed on the 55VT50 that I can tap into to power 2 low .30amp fans from?

Id rather not have a bunch of wiring on the outside of the tv. I don't want to splice into the existing fans wiring, because I assume those are controlled by circuitry that raises or lowers the speed depending on the temp sensors. I would prefer the fans to just run at full speed all of the time.

Help would be appreciated. I don't mind soldering, unless its a crazy tiny area. Let me know! Thanks!

I DON'T FREEKIN' BELIEVE THIS!!!!!

Many of you are familiar with my yellow blob history on this forum. Short version is that Panasonic sent a new panel as they diagnosed the panel as my issue. I was never really convinced and thought that the real root cause could be some of the actual electronics behind the boards...

Fast forward to today (and yesterday, actually) and my entire screen is flickering like crazy! What really sets it off is any bright or mostly white material. I put a white slide up via the USB port and it really went nuts. The interesting thing is that when you look at the flickering white screen, you can clearly see the dreaded blobs again. This tells me that something else was beginning to fail and the blobs were the first symptom and perhaps the new panel hid that for a while, but now something else is failing and it is no longer watchable.

I can't tell you how discouraged I am. We've re-opened the original service request and they are sending a tech out to look at it. I've been told that technicians can no longer order replacement parts for Panasonic plasma sets, but they may find parts on a secondary market. Maybe this time I'll get a full replacement. If not, I'm going to be very upset with Panasonic (as if I'm not already).

I took a video of the behavior on my iPhone, but unfortunately mov files cannot be attached to the thread. You'll just have to take my word for it!
