I am always puzzeled by how people rate blacks/colors of a TV set based on photos they view on their computer monitor.

The blacks will only be as black as your computer monitor (probably LCD) is able to go. That put aside, the camera being used will have completely mangeled with the blacks/colors as well.

As a sidenote... speaking of the new Panasonic ZT65... this may well be the last Plasma Panasonic ever produces: http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/17/nikkei-panasonic-may-end-plasma-hdtv-production-soon/

^That hasn't been posted enough. I hope we can see it in all the prospective Panasonic 2013 panel threads, too.

It is hard to tell just how deep blacks are unless you are comparing side by side, or better yet to objectively measuring it. These top of the line plasmas (ie VT50, F8500 and iam sure VT60 and ZT60) are all very close. Another reason to wait for the reviews and see if there is a concensus winner on who is the current black level champ.

I imagine the black levels between the VT50 and F8500 would be more obvious in a dark environment.

But then he said it was played through a DVD player, so I dunno. If it was a DVD, well, what's the point in 'testing' out or forming an opinion on an HDTV while looking at SD content.

You realize that Blu-ray is just a format for HD content, it's still on a DIGITAL VIDEO DISC...

Blu-rays and DVDs are two different things. I just want to be sure that the preliminary real-world reviews of the F8500 are being done on HD content. rolleyes.gif

You may want to get your facts straight. DVD should not be used when talking about BD. They're two different formats.

Adjusting settings according to personal preference is not calibration.

The 8500 and the VT50 are the same except that the VT50 has a 10 point gamma module - very handy and time saving.

No consumer TV that I know of comes from the factory pre-calibrated. If you want a calibrated TV delivered to your door contact Value Electronics or Cleveland Plasma.

Absolutely true. Even small differences in black level are noticeable in a totally light controlled environment.

Since Blu-ray Disc is a unique digital optical media format, I agree that in the effort to limit confusion the terms should not be used in combination.

Thanks, I just wasn't sure if I was missing something my other Samsung that has an HDMI labeled "DVI" is tied to a set of analog audio inputs, seems kind of pointless to label it as such without them.

As for the output I guess I will just have to look and see if the optical can be forced to do PCM stereo as those adapters are only like $20 on Monoprice and would save me from having to upgrade my stereo.

On my E8000 panel you can set the TV to output PCM through the Optical out.
