Spears and Munsil say the following concerning their similar pattern:

1. These patterns are for checking the effective gamma of the midtones on your display without requiring a light meter or colorimeter.
2. This is only a single data point; measuring the complete curve requires using a meter and the Equal Energy Window patterns.
3. Most LCOS projectors and plasma panels cannot display fine-grained patterns like the ones used in this pattern accurately. For those displays, a the Equal Energy Windows and a meter must be used for correct results.
For my 50ST60, I needed to use gamma 2.6 to minimize the changes to the 10 point controls to give me 2.2 gamma with 5% windows, and this calibration measured 2.4 against S&M's Equal Energy windows. The gamma (and everything else) varies with the APL, and the pattern discs really can't be used to confirm anything, because they're going to have different APLs between themselves, they measure only one point, and they don't work on plasmas anyway per S&M.
