Considering a budget plasma TV

LG 42PA4500
Samsung PS43E450
Panasonic VIERA TXP42X50B

Sources are DVD, a HTPC, freesat sky (SCART RGB)

Which is best for picture quality and scaling SD?

I know these are not full HD screens but since the sources aren't high resolution (apart from the HTPC) I think can get away with it.

Do these offer 1:1 for the HTPC and easy to set correct resolution?

I've gone for the Panasonic. Just noticed it's 1024x768 not 1366x768. Hoping the low resolution isn't off putting, I know not going to have HD sources, and doubt they'll notice the drop in resolution anyway.

Is this a problem for the HTPC? 1024x768 is 4:3 resolution, so if I set that in the desktop resolution does it set ratio as 4:3 when playing movies?

I have the Samsung 43e450 and the picture is indeed great with an hd source and it does handle SD very well. I think its been running around $379 at my best buy lately, so for the money I can't imagine you will find a better TV.

plasma arrived, parents are happy with it. One great surprise is that it plays video files! I didn't expect that at all (my pio lacks this) And even more it plays 720p MKV files! So does the same as my Oppo 83. So they don't need a dedicated HTPC/Media player as the TV does it. 720p HD files look great, although I guess technically there is some scaling going on don't think they care or notice.

No dead or lit pixels, and good picture from SCART RGB SD Sky box. Bargain, can't believe plasmas are £300 with 5 year warranty.

Have a Pioneer LX-5090 personally.

Anyone know if USB hard drives work, and if so what partition system? I know FAT32 works but NTFS? I have a feeling it won't support it. Also if 2.5" HD can run off USB power, rather than having 3.5" and requiring a separate PSU.

You can also try to format the drive in exFAT; large SD cards use this format, it can handle larger than 4GB files and can be read from and written to from almost any operating system.
