It's strange to think that I just bought a Panny 65VT50 plasma for close to the same price as the 40" XBR and I've had to do all sorts of stuff like burn-in slides, calibrate, watch for IR, etc while the old Sonys I had to pretty much plug it in and that was it right outta the box. And the overall picture quality ( at least color and black levels) on those old CRTs is arguably *better* than today's Plasmas which I expect to last only half as long as the CRTs.

That Panny will last much longer then your old CRT. As far as the PQ is concerned, that's a very subjective point of view. Regardless, I think as you put some mileage on you new Panny and calibrate it properly, the picture may surprise even you.

There's no comparison. Yugos were crap, plain and simple. Panasonic has always produced a quality product.

You don't have to be so insulting. Crap is nowhere near as bad as a Yugo. biggrin.gif

As for the CRT being reliable, i've had 3 high-endTube TVs during the 80's and into the early 90's which developed serious problems during the first few years of use and had to be repaired. But i have four Plasmas dating back to 2005 and haven't had a single problem with any of them.
