Is the extra Costco warranty valid if you are no longer a member when you have to make a warranty claim? For example, if you cancel your Costco membership the second year and your TV breaks? I would consider buying a membership just to buy the S64 since it's not available at regular retail, and the extra warranty would just be a bonus...

lol i'm in the same boat. not a member at costco or sams, but willing to become a member just for the 65" S64. waiting to see if costco's in my area are going to carry it.. they know nothing of it yet...

but yeah, i'm totally wondering about the club membership too. is the free second year valid if you are no longer a member? and what about years 3-5 with the square trade warranty? i'd assume they're valid because you paid for 'em, but do they move to years 2-4?

What's the pricing on the S60? I started out with a budget under $1000 (somewhat flexible for PQ sake) and was looking at the LG 60PN6500, which I've found as cheap as $800 + $65 tax, but everyone is telling me to go with the S64. I would pay 25% to maybe 33% more for better PQ plus the glare filter, but not %100 more.

I finally got my 42S60 delivered and installed! I can't believe how good the picture is! All I did was use cnet setting so far. It looks like a mini version of my VT50, which by the way is exactly what dnice said when he was doing my calibration. When I get more time on it, I will try my best to match it to my VT50.

P.S. The copy picture setting feature is SO nice! If this is the last 42" 1080 plasma ever made I couldn't be happier!biggrin.gif

If any p65s60 owner's care to help me out and chime in, I'm a bit of a dilemma between the p65s60 and the p60st60 (same price now @ BB)... see my post here http://www.avsforum.com/t/1450484/official-panasonic-tc-pxxst60-series-thread/2280 . Just don't know if it's worth giving up 5" for brighter pic and better AR. I'm not a big game, just play ps3 occasionally. I have a pic of my living room there. Thanks!

Psst, did you use his prep-slide method before he calibrated it? Care to post your settings?

The difference between a 65/60 incher is much smaller than something like a 42/50 incher. If twitch-gaming is of no concern to you, then I say go for the ST60.

I hesitate to ask since I know the topic can turn ugly, but could any S60/S64 owners comment on the panel's handling of image retention? If anyone has owned both the S60/S64 and the ST60, could you compare the IR handling of both? Concerns have seemingly made a comeback with Panasonics of the past few generations.

If you already ordered the s60 and keep your room pretty dark like you say, then why not try it out and if you don't like it exchange it for the st60. If you're anything like me and cancel the s60 then get the st60 you might have it in the back of your mind (I wish I would have tried out the s60). Then go out and spend more money on something you should have just tested in the first place.

I'm afraid once I have a 65" in my hands, I will have a hard time going to the 60" even if the PQ is a bit better... then I'll have to hold another 6-8 months out to afford the 65ST60 because then nothing else will do lol smile.gif Point taken, I do have a pickup truck and the means to return it for the 60st60.

Picture quality is awesome on the s60, you won't be taking it back for that reason. The only reason would be the glare, and if it bothers you enough to take it back, then I'm sure you won't mind going down in size. What's the biggest tv you own at the moment?

My signal source is a PS3. I mostly stream Amazon Instant Video and I also play some blu ray disks. I'd like to set it as Yukon Trooper mentions above.

Looking in PS3 settings under "video settings" I see "1080p 24p Output (HDMI)" and the options are automatic, on or off. It is currently set on automatic.

Looking in display settings, I don't see anything related. Likewise, I'm not seeing anything when going manually through Video Output Settings.

I can't find any setting saying 24p conversion or override or anything like that. eek.gif

Is there a way to do what Yukon Trooper is talking about with a PS3? I suspect one of the 3 options in "1080p 24p Output (HDMI)" is the correct answer... or am I all wet and need to look in some other settings menu?

Either way, some guidance would be appreciated on how to execute this workaround in a PS3.

Thanks! smile.gif

Set it to off. Setting it to Automatic and having the TV set to 60Hz should also work.

coming from 10 year old 42" jvc, no 60 or 65, big upgrade. I'll just post the pic of the room here too, I was just trying not to cross post.

Okay, if you're not use to a 65 inch, then testing one out for a week probably won't accustom you to it enough to miss the extra screen real estate. If you've had one for a while then it is hard to go down, and you will miss the extra screen size. If the 65 doesn't work out then 60inches will still look huge compared to 42. If you were comparing a 65 inch led to a 60 inch plasma, I would tell you to get the plasma. Since you're comparing plasma to plasma, try out the 65 first. What are your concerns about the s60?

my concerns would be the glare and brightness mostly, and others have said the picture on the s60 is dimmer than the st60.

The glare should be your only concern as the s60 can get plenty bright in certain picture modes. It will definitely look dim out of the box, so you will need to play with the picture modes as soon as you get it.
During the day I put mine in vivid mode (even though most people on here say never to use it) because it does make the picture a lot brighter and cut down on the glare. Have you looked into the s64 with the AR filter?

Considered the s64, however I'm using the BB 2 year no interest financing and saving my cash for other stuff for now, so those are the only 2 possibilities for me right now. That definitely sounds like a great middle ground though!

I'm coming from a 42-inch ST30 (2011 plasma) to a 60-inch S60. Once my slides get done Thursday morning I can post up some impressions on here. It looks like your living space is pretty light-controlled (venetian blinds/some curtains), so glare shouldn't be an issue in your case.

Yeah, I'm not sweating about 5" either — I don't sit that far away from the TV and currently have a 47". Others might need the full 65" though.

My only desire is a set with great PQ in 24p mode. However, I'm not particularly pleased about having to pay for 3D to get one, and I would've liked to take advantage of Costco's extended warranty. I also don't want to have no worry about burn-in from all the pillarboxed and letterboxed content I watch, and am a little nervous about that simply because I've never owned a plasma.

Then considering everything, my advice is to try out the 65 keeping in mind that you will probably return it because of the glare. The s60 is a mirror and the glare will probably bother you. That being said it doesn't hurt to test it out. You won't miss the extra size as a 60 inch is definitely a huge tv, and as el matadurr said not as much a difference as a 42 to 50. It's only 17% more screen so it's not that much. It seems to me like you want a 65 inch and that's why you're in such a dilemma. I think it won't really matter going from the 65 to the 60 unless in the back of your mind you really want a 65.

I'm trying to say test out the 65 s60 and if your not happy with it exchange it for the 60 st60, instead of getting the 60 st60 and then exchanging it for the 65 st60 and spending a thousand more. which you're probably going to do. Who knows, you may be happy with the s60 and if not, then you may realize it's not that big a difference and save yourself a grand in the end. Good luck, and let us know what happens.

Sam's does 0% for 6 months on items I think. Might be worth checking out if you are concerned about not having the AR filter. I don't know what their 0% programs are currently though.

On a related note, I buy all my BF Goodrich tires there as well because tires seem to be a lot less expensive at Sam's.

Just a heads up- I asked the Panasonic Insider when the 50" S64 would hit Costco and Sams Club, and he informed me of the following:

50" ships last week of may. Out on floor in June.

Hope this helps answer some questions.

Harmony One users;

Rejoice!

While the software interface has always been panned as kind of clunky, Logitech has the TC-P65S60 in their database. A standard Device add and Activities set up worked for me on the first try.

Meanwhile the 42" s60 is already no longer available for direct purchase (just store locator, then nothing). Not that I'd ever buy direct, & would rather have the s64 anyway in whatever size.

Can anyone comment on the difference between this set and an older Panasonic from 2011 like the S1?

I'm going from a 54S1 to a 60" or 65"... And I'm wondering if the s1 has a similar AR coating to the s60? Or is it closer to the s64? The s1 is perfect and I've never noticed glare. I've got a decently light controlled room, but still wouldn't want to take a step back.

I don't care about 3d or apps, so this set seems perfect for me if the AR coating isn't worse. If it is, I could prob hunt down a s64 at a Costco.

Thanks!!

I looked at an S60 and ST60 at Best Buy yesterday and came away very disappointed with the S60. With whatever default settings were being used, the S60 was significantly dimmer than the ST60 and appeared to have more aggressive ABL. I wanted to compare them at Sears, where I would have access to a remote to change the settings on each TV, but my local Sears doesn't have the S60 on display yet. Has anyone (besides David Katzmaier) measured full-screen white on an S60 or S64? And why are Katzmaier's measurements so much lower than Chad B's? Is that because Katzmaier is using low panel brightness and Chad is using mid panel brightness? I would hate for full-screen white to be only 11 fL. It is 17 fL on my current plasma, and that is bad enough.

Using a 50S60 as my primary monitor for a few days now and the thing looks phenomenal. Mass Effect 1 feels like an actual movie. I am using Fairchild's 4th calibration from page 7.

I do have a question for anyone with more experience. I am having issues with the TV's overscan, I can't seem to turn it off. I use a PC with a GTX 680 connected via HDMI and the image is always slightly larger than the display unless I turn on screen resizing in the nVidia control panel. I have HDMI 1 set for Game mode and Screen size 1 with zoom set to Justify. It still overscans.
