I bought one of the last 50ST50's available in Ontario at a good price on boxing day from a small retailer in Guelph Ontario. After only about 15 hours of viewing time on the television (a couple of 3D movies and a couple of hockey games) I had horizontal white static lines appear on the screen for about 20 to 30 seconds and then the TV's protection circuitry shut it down. A red light at the bottom of the screen flashed 7 times repeatedly but the TV would not turn on unless it was unplugged and replugged (apparently the number of red light flashes is an important diagnostic device, I learned later). After the hard reboot the TV worked okay again for another couple of short viewing sessions but then began shutting down, with the same sequence of horizontal white static lines appearing prior to shut down. The frequency of the horizontal lines followed by shut down increased significantly until it happened every 10 minutes. I contacted Panasonic Concierge service and they informed me that they would arrange for the replacement of a circuit board by the local Panasonic authorized repair shop. After waiting for about 10 days the part arrived and the board (I think it was called and SU board or SVU board) was replaced yesterday. Unfortunately when I got to try the TV later that night the horizontal white static lines reappeared after about 30 minutes but went away briefly only to reappear about 20 minutes later and result in the same shut down sequence as before the repair. I contacted Panasonic Concierge this morning and they told me I had to contact the local repair shop. The local repair shop now says they have spoken to Panasonic Canada and they are asking them to replace the same circuit board that was replaced in the hope that the replacement board was simply defective. My concern is that there is a more serious problem with the TV that is causing the circuit board to fail and a third board will get fried as well.
Has anyone out there heard of this type of problem with the ST50 model? Anyone have similar difficulties with getting an effective repair or replacement from Panasonic?
