Any suggestions on which Blurays to watch that show maybe the deepest blacks etc...?

You might like to try:

**DISCLAIMER**

None of them are exactly masterpieces, IMHO (some beer and popcorn might help and do the trick though biggrin.gif) specially the Alien movie, but as "torture test" for the F8500 i think they are quite good.

They put to shame my C8000 LCD, no matter how much i try, if i wan´t deep blacks, the blacks are crushed and if i wan´t shadow detail the blacks are grey.....

1.- Book of Eli

2.- The Descent (2005)

3.- The Strangers

4.- Sin City

5.- Alien vs Predator 2 (un watchable on my C8000. Thank god biggrin.gif)

Thanks.

This is BB's loyalty program. Historically, it's based on how much money you spend in a given year ($2,500). So, if you buy an F8500, for example, you're automatically in. Personally, I've found that once you're in, you tend to stay in regardless. Besides the 60 day return window, there are benefits (like free expedited shipping from BestBuy.com) and some other special promotional opportunities you'll get throughout the year, but the main reason to get it is for the return window. Recently, BB went to a 15 day return policy for non-Silver customers. Pretty crappy, IMO. It appears BB is testing the waters to gauge interest into making Premier Silver more along the lines of Amazon Prime. At least, that was my takeaway from a quick research survey they asked me to take.

Samsung signed a Capacitor Settlement Agreement March 2, 2012 and it allows 18 months from that date to file a claim. If you have one of the covered sets that was manufactured prior to December 31, 2008 and are in the US you are covered by the settlement. The settlement allowed for repair, reimbursement, or $300 for the old set. The replacement boards are no longer available for DLPs so Samsung has been offering out of warranty exchange with a fee to DLP owners covered by the settlement. I do not have any information that this extends to LCD and Plasma models covered by the agreement. It may or may not.

Three weeks ago I received a PN60F8500 delivered in exchange for my 56" HL-T5689S DLP and $1500. I have chronicled my experience in the 2007 Samsung LED Owner's Thread (HLT XX87/89S) forum at post http://www.avsforum.com/t/827799/2007-samsung-led-owners-thread-hlt-xx87-89s/14300_100#post_23159257. If you have a covered set I strongly suggest that you read that post and all my later posts.

Bad capacitors may be causing problems that you have not noticed. To file a claim, you do not have to have a problem only swollen capacitors and maybe not even that according to a reading of the agreement by someone more versed in it than I am.

I do not know if the forums for other covered sets have the information that I have posted here. I do not have time to investigate or spread the word. Hopefully, others will do that while there is still time to file a claim.

If you spend $2500 or more in the same year you get a Premier Silver status that offers many different benefits including a 60 day return window.

Excuse me if i dont use punctuation or grammar in this post, but im kinda in a hurry and this info should be passed on to owners and prospective owners. Unless this firmware update that we are hoping for is in the hands of just a few people, there is no new firmware update. I spoke to a remote management tech and she spoke to a product specialist on the f8500. They said they are not aware of this popping problem and they are not aware of any new firmware. She remoted into my television and thankfully, i was able to reproduce the pops on the movie, goon, on netflix. I was also able to produce it on savages blu ray, both in which she saw the pops both times. She said the goon pops were almost grey to white. (pretty accurate, at least to me). Then said she noticed it on savages. Thats a good thing. I told her there are plenty of folks who have this set and are experiencing it. She said that she is only one person and may not be aware of the issues and said she didnt hear many issues with this set b/c its brand new. She did a tv scan remotely and said there are no issues. Said that it shouldnt be happening and ordered a tech to come out. Not really sure what a tech can do, but ill take it if they send it out. I will easily be able to show this tech the pops in person. If you are not calling samsung and are an owner experiencing the pops, then its your fault if samsung doesnt know. They arent mind readers and need peoples feedback to make a change. Hell, the tech even admitted to the abl or whatever the hell its called that the d series suffered from. My first two attempts to their support were the old, "wait for a tech to call in 24-48 hours." Thats bs. They wont call back, at least in my case they didn't. They finally transferred me to a tech and then a remote tech. Just wanted to let you all know. Not gonna lie, a little discouraged that im under the impression that there is no firmware fix. I hope there is, the issue is still not enough for me to return this insanely nice display.

Can you please post the time positions and scene descriptions for the movies you mentioned above? It would help others to test their sets and verify if any future firmware updates fix the issue. Thanks.

The latest version of the firmware they loaded totally eliminated both the pops & any floating blacks some of you may have observed. Robert thought the new firmware,1017.2, might begin as early as the end of next week. Robert's version was even newer and won't yet be available. I'm not 100% certain as to whether the update you guys will receive is the 'pop eliminator', but it may be. Either way, it sure looks like it's coming. Do NOT call Samsung for this as they'll have no idea what you're talking about.

I thought you guys were only able to reproduce a single instance of the popping in one hockey scene and never saw any fluctuating black? That's probably too small of a sample size to definitively say it is 100% fixed. Hopefully people can post specific movie scenes where they see these issues to help others test for it.

Like when he was adjusting the contrast he pointed out the lines around the contrast menu that went to the edges of the screen and other menu abnormalities. Forgive me I don't know the technical term he used for it.

Sounds like line-bleed. Here is an image from a different plasma:

Samsung was apparently able to reproduce it in their labs since this software was developed in their own facilities and not Robert's store. So I'm assuming they feel they have a good handle on this. They also came up with fixes for the Cal modes. Robert was able to test it on the one popping scene he had, so at least that's promising when combined with the fact that Samsung didn't need Robert's sample to come up with a fix.

So if this pans out, the issues people are seeing will be fixed. smile.gif

No. Rec. 709 uses D65. If your color temperature seems too warm when calibrated to 6,500, then it may be because your meter is not giving you accurate measurements. If you're using a correction file, then try measuring without it or with a different correction file. If you have a color chart or a display that is already calibrated, then try using that as a reference.

Just got the f8500 64. I will say the picture is amazing but i am a huge sports fan and this is my first plasma. I am replacing my 55 inch 8000 samsung led.

Lets just say what a big mistake it was because you can not watch hockey or basketball on this tv. The screen flashing ( POPPING ) or whatever you guys call it is terrible. I mean awefull I am returning it tomorrow. Wow i didn't know about this problem on plasmas untill I read about this tonight as i am looking for the fix. My led does not do this at all when I watch my Kings hockey games. This thing is like flashes are going off in my room. Im telling you guys its bad. If you guys arent seeing this on sports than I dont know what to tell you but it is there. Baseball is not so bad and I dont see it much at all but any fast action arena sports it is bad. I have tried every option in the settings to fix this and I couldn't. Every single person who has come to my house has commented on this flashing issue. Dont buy this tv if you are a hockey or basketball fan. If you only watch shows and movies it is an awesome tv. I have to say bye bye to this sammy.

Well the "popping" Stv could be seeing are the strobes form photographers. From the description he gave that's what he's seeing not the popping that is getting fixed. If they are bright flashes then its not the TV it's the source most likely. He's also coming from a TV that is almost 10 inches smaller and may not have ever noticed this before.

it may be a problem with the f8500, but not all plasmas. i'll have to look into this when i check out the f8500 again. i'm waiting for the 64's to arrive in a couple weeks, so i've got until then. i've watched a lot of hockey on my plasma and friend's plasmas and i have never experienced anything that you describe. it'd be a shame if the most expensive one of the bunch was the worst:rolleyes:

I cant find any uninstall/install anywhere. There are recommended apps in the app section on the top right that will install fine and preinstalled apps will work but for some reason the other apps are not there.

How do you compare the two TVs?

That's what's sad people seeing things and effects that are source related thinking it's the TV. Then they return them but someone going to get a great deal on an open box

How do you compare the two TVs?

Not clear if it was an F8000 that he replaced one thing I noticed this year is that the cost of the 60F8000 is a little lower then the 60F8500 I think the PQ ON THE TV is superior to the LED they are bright but plasma is so much richer and more saturated. That's just my personal opinion.

Thanks! I asked because I'm moving from un-metered eye calibrated warm 1 (D75) settings.
To me, unless you start frigging around with CMS, warm 2 'out of the box' is just too yellow.

I am looking for a new TV since my HP DLP finally died after many years of faithful service. A few months ago I tried the PNE7000 and had issues with pink blobs, and the VT50 which had really, really bad image retention that would not clear up within my 60 day BBY return period - the IR was very noticeable during regular viewing (not just solid color slides). I have a bright living room with plenty of sunlight and I felt both sets handled it OK, but the VT50 was better.

In skimming the last 10 pages or so here, I see there is an issue with banding on the new F8500s. It would be great if post #1 would keep a running list of known issues, fixes, firmware updates, etc. Many threads (like Denon AVR ones) do this and it saves people from trying to dig stuff out of thousands of posts as these threads get quite large.

So far the F8500 looks like a contender for me, but I was wondering if anyone knows answers to the following:

  • With the increased brightness of the F8500, is there now issues with IR or burn in over last years sets? I have an 8mo old whose baby DVDs are 4:3, and a wife that is not as careful with viewing content as I am - ie - pausing, watching same channel with logo for hours on end, etc. The E7000 never had a hint of IR even with their abuse.
  • I use a Harmony remote and a Denon 3313 receiver and would like to use ARC for the TVs apps. The VT50 worked flawlessly but the E7000 insisted on switching my receivers input to TV Audio about 30-40 seconds every freakin time I turned the TV on, forcing us to switch receiver inputs back to whatever task we started using the Harmony. It was if Samsung was so full of themselves to think that on every power on, the only reason why I would turn on their set was to use their apps. I had to run a separate optical cable from the E7000 to avoid this behavior. Does the F8500 do the same thing?
  • Is there still an issue with the pink blob color uniformity that many E7000s had?
