That was five and a half years ago! eek.gif

We got the Pioneer 6010 Kuro, and had it calibrated by UMR. It's going strong with one recalibration.

Our Samsung DLP had a new lamp installed at that time. Our oldest bachelor son is still using it. I doubt that he has more than 7K hours on it by now.

I mostly hang out in the new display threads to collect professional calibration reports that owners post. biggrin.gif

I liked the DLP set, but I wanted big, and I got tired of telling visitors that they had to sit down in front of the TV so really see what HDTV was. rolleyes.gif

Are you shopping?

I have the PN51F5500 while i think the picture Quality is suprisingly very good, the blacks are black the colors are bright but i do not think that it can come close to the F8500 the 5500 lacks alot of the sttings that are available on the F8500 so tweeking the picture is lacking with less settings. IMHO

We never can be sure what a given owner has been up to, or how they are reporting what they see.

When we say that calibrators are trying to make the picture look as accurate as possible, we don't mean in relation to real life. We mean in relation to what the director and color correction team intended. So that if the director intended x value for red, the display shows that value of red. Even if x value for red is not the value we see in real life. So if you hire a calibrator to come and calibrate your tv, he will bring it to as close to reference as possible. As close as acurate to what the director intended as possible. Not as close to real life as possible.

Now the term PQ is purely subjective. What is pleasing in terms of picture quality to you can be the opposite for me. PQ can mean accuracy for some but it doesn't have to. That's what I think Vinnie meant by some people will be less happy with the pq after a calibration. I know that my first impression after calibration was that the image looked a bit soft. It wasn't until I started noticing how white the whites were and how black the blacks were that I really started to appreciate accuracy over pop. Now I can't even look at any tv set to vivid mode.
After the pile drive from all the Sammy boys and girls (you know who you are), thank you for the clarification (I've been gone all afternoon). wink.gif

Fierce GT, I suppose in the case of some directors (i.e. Michael Bay and his excessively orange skin tones), you might have a point, but after having a pro calibration and experiencing a reference level calibration for the past 3 years, I rarely (more like never) find myself making picture adjustments (aside from switching between ISF Night and ISF Day). Nothing silly about that.

It's a two-way road, Barger. The fact that you can't acknowledge it shows just how biased you are.

As I recall, Hali asked a simple question as to why anyone would want to have their "perfect" F8500 calibrated, and I gave a reason why. Then several potshots directed at me personally ensued (look through the past few pages for the proof, thanks). I will respond to them as they surface and when the time allows, and you can add me to ignore if you don't like it.

Accuracy and, more appropriately, reference level PQ parameters (grayscale tuning, dialing in color accuracy, etc.) are what videophiles aim to get out of their multi-thousand dollar equipment, and the best way to do that is through professional calibration (or DIY if one takes the time to learn).

Every panel benefits from a professional grade calibration, no matter how great it looks out of the box.

Seems like since 1103 release things have really calmed down. The picture on this set is nothing short of stunning!

yup it sure has, which means not many issues are surfacing at this time. while I'm at it i'll confirm as well 1103 obviously fixes the pops. also to no surprise the brightness has decreased in output. I'm sure the engineers intended, and had to go this route.

Seems to me like the only real remaining issue left is input lag. rolleyes.gif
I wasn't sure what the best way to contact Samsung was to report an issue like input lag, so I tried using live chat support...terrible idea. The horror stories with their customer service are not in any bit exaggerated. Anyways, If anyone knows exactly how to report such an issue, please let me know. I have this little shred of hope that Samsung will pull through once more and reduce the lag for us gamers with the next firmware update. It's worth a shot at least, right?

I will be at shoot out on Saturday evening. Really looking forward to the event! Flying up to NY Saturday morning. It will be interesting to see where the VT60 places. IMO opinion the F8500 is leaps and bounds a better set. I had a VT60 for a few days and I didn't like so it got returned. IMO there is no comparison with the picture quality between the two sets. The picture quality is so much better on the F8500. I think the F8500 will be in the top 2 and could easily take first place.

After I did the update there was no noticeable difference with the brightness. It appears to be just as bright as it was before the update. Your eyes can be very deceiving at times.

Did my update as well and the picture is still outstanding. It would be nice if all programming was 1080p. smile.gif Now we just need network programming to feed us some better HD. The shootout should be very interesting I will be very surprised If the F8500 doesn't win.

I thought the same thing but after seeing how reviews started rolling out (Cnet ect) I now have a feeling the shootout will be another black is best race. Someone once posted it would be cool if they arranged it so the only the screen was visible(block bezel and logos) and they couldn't tell which was which and voted.. Not saying it is fixed, I absolutely believe it is not but I do think previous reviews, opinions and which is expected to win can play a small part in some decisions..
Now if it was a 50" shootout... biggrin.gif

I agree and posted the same thing after updating to 1103 and watching my F8500 for a few hours afterwards, but others say different so my eyes must be deceiving me.. cool.gif

Samsung Doesnt have a chance. That shootout is cut and dry for Panasonic to win. I read what owners are saying and go from there. Thanks ken for all your honesty and unbiased replies You are a great asset to this forum. And I'm a panny owner. Enjoy.

Now if it was a 50" shootout... biggrin.gif

Couldn't agree more. I firmly believe that the reviews play no small role in how people go into the 'display voting booths'. Just as the media can brainwash people into believing one thing or the other, these reviews predispose people to leaning one way or the other. This is no fault of the shootout, that I think is conducted in the best way possible (short of being able to mask off the displays so nobody knows which is which), but human nature is what it is. smile.gif
