Buzzing comes from coils on the power boards and upper scan drives, 3 separate boards from each other. All 3 have coils and all 3 buzz. So, you'll hear buzz mostly around the back center, upper right, and upper left.

Wow this is all really bizarre. Can any of you that DID get the "optimizing" message check if 3D brightness pops are gone or not? That was the message we all got when the 2D pops were fixed. I didn't get the message this time and no pops fixed. So maybe the updater has a bug, etc. If someone that DID get the message can verify pops that would be interesting.

To state an opinion isn't misleading. FWIW some of the expert reviews even mention the fan noise might be irritating to some people. For someone that is very sensitive to plasma buzzing it is possible they will be sensitive to the fan noise. I don't understand why you and others are always trying to correct what someone states in a post. The post was a response to one person.
You're exaggerating about the contents of my posts because you're getting defensive. If every unit exhibited this glaring fan problem, the owner's thread would be filled with complaints, which a quick scan of that thread reveals is not the case. Since there are some who own it and don't experience these loud fans, I can be reasonably sure they don't all exhibit fan noise that resembles that of a jet turbine (there, some more exaggeration for you).

I updated my 8500 firmware tonight, ota, and did "not" see any "optimizing" window pop up like it did on the previous rev. I saw a camera update with this revision, however, like some others noticed. Picture looks the same as before the update.

Maybe the 55" VT60 won't have the same level of fan noise as the larger models (which presumably have higher power consumption and get hotter)? Who knows. I would just go for the ST but I watch in daylight as well as at night, hence choosing the F8500 in the first place, and the filter on the ST60 seems quite poor from what I've seen.

EDIT: And I should add my retailer has been very helpful to this point but I don't want to push the friendship, hence why I don't want to just keep swapping models if it's just going to be pretty much the same on all of them. I'll add in response to Larry that I am only 25, and 25-30 is when high frequency hearing loss generally starts, so that may be a factor.

If I could get an LED I was happy with I'd do it, but I haven't seen any that come close to plasmas in picture quality.

I have a gt50 plasma and an Led tv mounted in 2 seperate rooms, on the same side of the wall, , about 7 or 8 feet apart, and if i keep the door open i can view
both and compare.. Trust me,, you can find leds that are right there as far as PQ with plasmas.. Ive done a lot of comparing, and although u can tell a bit
of a difference in them, each has their own strengths and IMO, the plasma does a bit better in certain dark scenes, but the led does better in the brighter scenes (more pop)
and the led defintely does better with BR... Although I'm not sure how leds compare with the new F8500, the added brightness may make the 8500 very close to being the ideal panel..

Not to be a nitpicker (some might say "not again"), but the best LED at the recent shootout (a Samsung) in NY still lagged in most areas next to the 3 plasma contenders. If anything, full-array LEDs (Sharp Elite, Sony XBR65H95) are the closet one can get to Plasma but have been all but phased out. An edgelit LED definitely doing better with BD (Blu-ray disc) is even harder to fathom.

I updated over the air on my 60" F8500 from 1103 to 1104 and got the optimization window. However, 3D still pops like mad just as it had before this firmware, so no change or fix there. Hoping they're still working on it ...

Wonder if there's a Samsung sanctioned fix that one of their techs could do as far as dampening goes. Or even a home remedy. Vantec makes dampeners for computer case fans which are basically silicon rubber gaskets that fit on the edge of the fan where it makes contact with the case. Wonder if something like this would work with the power coils.

Unfortunately I briefly owned a 55HX950 full array local dimming LED, probably the best LED you can get apart from the Sharp Elite (which you can't buy in Aus), and I found the contrast, colours and blacks were significantly worse than even the VT30 from a few years ago. Technically could go darker than any plasma but the blooming killed it. So I think I'm definitely a plasma guy as far as picture quality goes.

JRWalker,
Is this an actual picture of an F8500 plasma???? If so notice the stand part, looks to me then that the TV could be modded to use an e or d type stand.

What you think???

I will reiterate again, I never said they all exhibit fan noise. Again why do you have to nit pick a post by another user? The fact of the matter is some VT60's have excessive fan noise and there have been complaints by other members. I am done bickering with you and we need to get back on track with this thread.

Finished about 150 hours with my TV.
The PQ has been impressing me all the time even while watching DVDs. Just loving it.

I have to say something about the picture presets in this TV. The F8500 has some of the best out of box presets that I have seen on any TV. I really love the movie mode, it is the main mode I watch. Then there is the relax mode which I find to be really good for watching anime. Standard mode is quite decent too. Dynamic mode is the least I like and needs fine tuning until it becomes acceptable. I feel the TV is excellent for those who cant get it calibrated for whatever reason. The F8500 is one plasma TV that looks super gorgeous with out of the box settings and im sure it will be outstanding with calibration. I'm so glad that I got this TV over any other plasma or LED.

As of June 2013:
2,712 Bluray movies
1,593 DVD movies
356 bluray+DVD series
1,322 bluray+DVD Anime

I did but instead of buying it at the store where I purchased the TV (cost was around $600 for 4 years), I bought the Sqaure Trade warranty from Costco... 4 year warranty for $99.99! smile.gif

Samsung will sell you their warranty for about $300. How would you compare Costco's vs Samsung's? It seems to me that for and extra $200 to Samsung, the warranty would be better, correct????

Never checked into Samsung's warranty. I live in Canada so I'm not even sure it's available. I was going to go thru my B&M store's warranty... I got it down to around $450 and if I don't make any claims in the 4 years it comes back as store credit. I still found it pricey as I have never brought warranties in the past for my TVs. Then I read about Costo selling Square Trade warranty for TVs bought from Costco and for TVs bought outside from them. I heard good things about Square Trade so I thought I would give them a shot. I would imagine they would offer the same coverage as Samsung. Maybe someone else can chime in who have bought a Samsung warranty.

Samsung will sell you their warranty for about $300. How would you compare Costco's vs Samsung's? It seems to me that for and extra $200 to Samsung, the warranty would be better, correct????

Costco is just the place of purchase wink.gif SquareTrade is the actual place that has the warranty.....

If I were buyin g thorugh Best Buy I might get thiers depending on if I got a deal or not, otherwise Id probably go the squaretrade route just for the cost savings alone.....Im not sure what the Samsung covers vs the Squaretrade though, but it might be compareable...
