Since your experience suggests Kevin tends to calibrate the brightness lower than even you prefer and most calibrations result in final brightness being lower than the panel is capable of displaying, its also fair to posit that the calibration of cal-day could be mitigating the ABL and not just(or even) the enabling of cal-day in and of itself.

Also, wasn't the night calibration at a different cell light # which we've attributed some of the ABL behavior to?

The power supplies simply can't handle what's required to produce a full-screen white of the magnitude that a smaller white window produces.

I don't know what the exact settings were. I only used the Cal Day as an example where there was no popping, yet the dimmer Cal Night mode did have popping.

I can't figure out why but the built in video player on this model isn't nearly as functional as it was on the D series. None of my movies that I try to stream will let me fast forward or skip to parts. This is a bummer for some of the TV episodes and stuff I have on my computer to stream. Maybe they will fix this in a future firmware update.

Although strange, I'd rule out the cell light values before comparing so that you get a good apples to apples comparison. In this case I'd think the easiest way to test would be setting the night calibration cell value to the same as day's cell value and re-verifying that the popping is still happening.

It'd be nice to think they let cal-day get away with higher threshholds because they can be ensured that a professional has come in and calibrated it to a 'reasonable' level, but on the other side of that coin you'd think they'd warn the pros so that tvs don't melt down after some consumer asks their pro to 'crank it up to the max' on cal-day.

PH8TE - you're very welcome smile.gif

Robinson - I was considering it, but it seems posting calibrated settings is taboo if done by anyone but the calibrator. I was thinking maybe it'd be alright as long as I left the white balance values (where the real magic is) out? What do you all think? I have no problem posting my settings if you all say it's cool.

Ken - you're also very welcome. I had it professionally calibrated by Ken Whitcomb from Avical (he's on these boards). He left me with both Cal Day and Cal Night settings and 3D cal settings as well. I'm happy to help. What specifically would you like me to do?

Also wanted to mention that I just picked up a Darbee to go along with my new tv against the advice of David Abrams at Avical. I must say that when its good, boy is it good. I honestly didn't think I could get a more pleasing to my eye pq (notice I didn't say "better" or "more accurate"), but this thing does. It does actually make some things worse though. I am the type who is always adjusting things (much to my x's chagrin), and its easy to tell what material is appropriate for it, so I just keep the remote handy and shut it off as needed. It made Samsara, Skyfall and Zero Dark Thirty look better, but I had to turn it off for Lincoln and Argo. Video games also seem to greatly benefit.

LJ - I asked Ken during the calibration if he was ok with me posting settings to the board. He told me he didn't care personally, but that I should really ask David (the owner). I asked via email, but didn't receive a reply, so I'm not totally sure what to take from that. I want to help the members here, but not if it going to affect anyone's livelihood.

If you can, put your display in either Movie mode or Cal Night mode. Then search for any scenes with brightness popping that will enable you to replay the scene. Either a DVR or a Blu Ray player would be the obvious choices.

When and if you locate a scene with popping (verify by replaying and looking for a 2-step brightening), then put the display in Cal Day mode, replay and see if the popping is still there or gone.

Ok but just to let you know I've been watching almost exclusively in Cal Night mode and haven't noticed any pops at all. I used to see it every day on normal programming with the D series set. The only thing I can think of that used to consistently pop for me was Game of Thrones and True Blood (terrible show I know but...boobs). I haven't seen any with GOT and I don't have any True Blood DVR'd. I'll try some normal watching in Movie mode, but that's what I had it set to before the calibration and I didn't notice it then either. Any blu ray suggestions I can test this with? I don't own the Jaws blu ray. I do have Prometheus, but it seems people are only noticing that pop in the beginning in 3D.

If you have Harry Potter Deathly Hallowsd pt 2 try starting at Chapter 12 (Death easers attack hogwarts) it starts off very dark but then there are some very bright flashes etc, I would think if was goign to show up it would there due to the large contrast of whats on the screen......

Drapes are good but if you really want to cut out the light install plantation shutters. My room is 26"x15" with windows @ 5"x8". Middle of the Arizona afternoon facing the setting sun I am required to turn on a lamp to read the paper. I also bought a Darrbee Darblet and the PQ difference is very nice. The Darblet uses a different and unique algorithm. My totally uneducated description is that it allows you to turn the TV's sharpness way way down and adjust it back up using the Darblet which does not seem to have the same adverse effects created when turning the TV's sharpness up too high. I've read that many Panny owners are happy with it.

Have you noticed both the PN60F8500 and the UN60F8000 are both the same price either plasmas are getting more pricey or LED' s are coming down. This is just an observation. Because last year there was a bigger more expensive difference between LED AND plasma i know we are not supposed to talk price.
Or are we starting to get steered towards LED

My main setup

For some really high quality streaming videos, go to the youtube app on your 8500, and search for "4K Video". A sample 4k UHD (Ultra HD) video download by HQMEDIA was nice!
