I purchased a 60" GT50 back in August and absolutely love the TV. It is perfect for my bright room and is terrific for watching hockey, which was a major factor when choosing this tv over an LCD.

However, I noticed some slight IR in the lower right corner thanks to the fine folks at the Cartoon Network about two months ago. I immediately checked my settings and ran the built in slides every night for about the past month. The IR isnt really noticable unless your watching something with a bright background ...like hockey! Any other viewing is next to impossible to see.

Thankfully I had purchased the extended warranty through Best Buy and IR is covered. The TV rep came out the other day and told me they would have to come out and replace the panel. He would schedule it in about 10 days and he estimated that it would cost them about $900 to replace. None of which I was concerned about since I have the warranty.

Now, I received a phone call informing me that it is not cost-effective for them to replace it so I will end up getting a replacement at Best Buy.

My question is two-fold:

Should I try to wait it out another month to see if I can get the "new" version of the GT50 for 2013 (admittedly I havent looked to see what the comparable model would be yet)?

If I get a one for one replacement, should I look for a specific manufacture date or rev in hopes that maybe that might make a difference?

I'd wait it out. Chances are you wouldn't get another GT50 as the stock would be out and they are already sending out new models. I have a VT50 that is getting replaced due to some bad lines running through it and I'm waiting it out. Either going with the Samsung F8500 or ZT60 when they are available. Depending on which one I like better. Really leaning towards the ZT60 myself. But if the Samsung is as good as they say and IR is better on it, I might just shift that way. Not sure what a GT50 replacement would be as there is no GT this year.

Panasonic has discontinued the equivalent to the GT series for 2013.
For 2013 they have the ST60 and VT60, but the ST60 models are kind of in-between a 2012 ST50 and GT50.
The ST60 has fewer HDMI and USB ports than the GT50 and lack the THX picture modes. However the ST60 will add some of the VT50 unique features such as 96HZ display mode and extra calibration functions.
I've found stubborn early onset IR does eventually go away but it might take getting to over 1000 total hours of active use.
I'd recommend using the built-in screen wipe bright vertical white bar feature often when not watching regular TV.

The ST60 will not have the dual-core processor.

Holy smokes. The exact same thing happened to me. Cartoon Network is banned in my house or least on the main set. Two months old and after the kids watched some shows Saturday morning on CN the logo was permanently burned in. Three friggin hours was all it took! i waited a week watching all types of content and it would never go away. anyway Geek Squad came out and confirmed BI, gave me a ten day window for repair and called with a replacement ra# as Panasonic would not repair it ( which I hoped). The local warehouse had another GT in stock and we scheduled the replacement. Next day they came out and swapped it out. New set is fantastic! If this one goes then I guess I'll find something else but the GT as of last week was still the best choice for me. I know BB gets a lot of deserved heartache but the burn in warranty is for real.

Aside from not wanted to pay the parts and labor to repair your TV, the bigger reason that they want to replace your TV instead of repairing it is not just because it's an expensive repair, also by giving you a replacement they automatically cancel the remainder of your extended warranty - it does not carry over to the replacement TV so you lose any remaining time you have left on your EW and they won't have to risk having to pay for any future repairs. It's in the fine print - take a look. You should insist they replace the panel and repair your TV, or at least give you a free extended warranty on the new one equal to the one you're being forced to forfeit.

It doesn't make a difference. The date of manufacture doesn't really matter since some panels are randomly prone to persistent IR while others are not. And the "build date" on the back of the TV in only the day the various parts were assembled into a TV - it doesn't tell you if the panel was manufactured in April or July or December. And there's no way you'd be able to choose your own build date anyway.

Actually they reimburse you for the unused part of the plan. Understand it is not an extended warranty. Extended warranties only cover the things manufactures do.

After many discussions with Best Buy, I finally had my 60" GT50 replaced with a 60"VT60 yesterday. They were initially going to steer me into a "comparable model", which was the ST60, but since they were out of stock, and there was no supply coming in from Panasonic, I convinced them to upgrade me to the VT with no cost to me for my troubles. Win! Hope it is everything it is made out to be..

Can you please do a comparison. I think my 60GT50 will have to be replaced under warranty..........at least two green blobs have appeared and are not going away. I may be having to consider the 60VT60 too.............it sure looks nice in the stores, but so did the GT50.

That's unfortunate but if it was me getting a replacement, I would also look in getting nothing less than an VT60.

Congrats on ending up with the VT60 !

About the extended warranty - did Best Buy reimburse you for the remainder of the plan per adupree's post above? Or did they consider the terms "fulfilled" and terminate the EW when they replaced your TV? Or were you able to negotiate a new warranty on the replacement TV? Curious how they handled this particular situation.
