Plasma Flat Panel Displays > Samsung PN60F5500 (Mid Tier 2013 Model)

So I just saw this Plasma on Amazon for pre-order at $1,197. Anyone have any thoughts on it? I can't really find much online but looks like it will be releasing soon. I just ordered a LG 60pm6700 but now thinking this Samsung would be the better way to go. It will cost a few hundred more then I spent on the LG but might be worth it. Haven't received the LG yet so can't really comment on the picture. Also thinking that Samsungs would be better on glare then the mirror fronts that LG is known for. Any thoughts?

I just purchased the 60"F5300. I have been extremely impressed with the picture quality so far. I'm coming from a 64” Pioneer CRT RPTV and can say the picture on the Samsung beats the Pioneer, better detail and color, blacks are great. The screen glare is not bad at all, I have a window on the wall to the right of the TV, with the blinds closed, no glare, with it open it washes out the picture some but it is still viewable. I've only had the chance to watch one movie on it so far, Gladiator Bluray, but was totally impressed with the set.

I am also interested in more info/thoughts on the F5500.. I've been scoping out the 64 inch model. Does not look like these are REALLY available yet (Amazon says "ships in 2 to 5 weeks", and the Samsung site does not have any info on this model yet), so there may not be any real "hands on" info from users for a few weeks. The F5500 series does look promising though. PQ should be better than last year's mid range Samsung plasma TVs. Active 3D (2 pairs of glasses included), dual core processor, IR blaster (included), and it also comes with the "smart touch" remote. This looks like a good option for those of us who don't have the $3500 to throw down on the F8500. I'm excited to see some reviews on this TV, and some comparisons between this and the Panasonic ST60.

Just an FYI, Amazon raised their price on this TV to $1,397 but still has no stock.

Rakuten.com (formally Buy.com) has the TV in stock and is still selling it for $1,199.

Amazon does price match this site but will probably tack on a $50 enhanced delivery charge.

Wonder why they upped the price while they still don't have it in stock.

60" F5300 I saw at bestbuy was pentile. Wonder if this is as well.

My brother might be buying the 51" F5300 today. If so, I will do a basic settings calibration with the Munsil and AVS test patterns and will post my overall impressions of the set.

Looks like he will be getting this weekend instead.

I spent about four hours tonight with my brother's 51" F5300. I have to say I am really impressed.

I used the Spears and Munsil along with the AVS test patterns to calibrate basic settings. Movie mode, Warm 1, contrast at 90, brightness at 46, color and tint at default, sharpness at 3, and gamma -1. Cell light will vary to what you want or need. I turned off all of the gimmicky features and set the Black Optimizer to Dark Room.

The unit gives a very detailed, really crisp, bright natural image. Colors and grayscale out of the box looked good and natural. I was expecting just a bit better black levels, but the smaller size panels never seem to match what the larger sized panels produce, so it may vary.

Motion looked fine.

I looked closely for fluctuating brightness/pops with a variety of channels and Blu-ray (didn't check hockey) and I saw nothing. (I briefly had a 64D8000 before the firmware update and that was a nightmare for me).

Definitely recommended.

Thanks a lot David of ur impressions! smile.gif I have a terrible itch for upgraiding my lg 50pk550, and 60f5500 seems like a solid pick!

Ive heard that midtier sammys are pentile, but I take u didnt notice anything negative, even if the panel was pentile?

Meh, need to wait couple weeks still, we dont have them at stores yet here in northern europe frown.gif

I experienced nothing negative during the four hours with the set. It surpassed my expectations especially for the money.

It's a better set than my Panasonic 65ST30 although the F5300's blacks are not as good.

Wonder if the F5500 is using the same screen as the 5300 but adding the smart and 3d features. I am surprised there are no real reviews out for these models considering they are already being sold and in stock.

On paper it seems they are the same panel but I wonder if the 3D might add some 2D benefit to the F5500 (better blacks?) This has been seen before with other displays.

Well I certainly hope so. Did last years e530 produce lighter blacks than 550? Theres so little reviews from those sets also frown.gif
Afaik panels at f series midrange is same as last years e550/530.. Hopefully theres improvements at ansi contrast smile.gif

Yeah I'm wondering this also. I have been deciding to get a Plasma or an LED and either the F5300 or F5500 looks to be of interest. I am looking at the 51 inch models. Can't decide if I really need/want the 3d or not. I have lots of 3d movies, but when I had a 3d tv I would only watch on occasion. Now if the F5500 has a better picture then I will just go with that one, but if the F5300 model is just fine I will save the $300-400 difference.

DavidHir, if u dont mind me asking, how was the glare? And did it said somewhere in the specs is the panel Real Black, like 530/550 series had last year? smile.gif

Here is a customer review of the F5300 from Amazon. I assume we will start to see more reviews popping up on these models soon.

Not sure about the specs, but sun coming into the room from the side did cause glare issues. However, with blinds, my brother was able to control the glare to a good degree with no problem. But, your mileage may vary here.

I'm not so sure about the F5300 or the F5500 being pentile. In the Best Buy near me they had the 60inch F5300 right next to last year's 60inch 550 and I could see the screen door effect on the 550 but it was not noticeable if apparent at all on the F5300. Also, if you look on Samsung's website the tech specs resolution for all of last year's pentiles (60inch) was listed as 1080p vertical resolution. Last year's 51 and 65 inch models and the F5300 60inch are listed as just 1080p resolution. Just my observations but I do not believe that the F5300 is a pentile display.
DavidHir's Avatar DavidHir 08:07 AM 04-09-2013
Screen door effect not an issue on the F5300.

i just ordered the PN51F5500 i will let you all know how it is my budget this year and couldn't sping for the F8500. I'm replacing my PN50C7000 in my den i would have gotten the 60" but it's a little to big for the space I have a PN60E8000 in the living room that i just bought one year ago i will compare the PQ and let you all know this set may be a sleeper. What i mean is for the money

The PN51F5500 has the clear image panel and wide color Enhancer Plus correct me if I'm wrong but I think that's the same panel as last year's E8000. I have this on order from Amazon it should be here Tuesday the 30th so I'm a little excited.

The e8000 used the real black pro panel.

Anything new on these Samsung's? All the consumer reviews I see look great, but I have not seen many reviews from the trusted professional reviewing sites.

Any word on the TV yet? I

I've been looking into getting the PN60F5500/PN60F5300. I'd love to hear how you found the ABL, glare and if you do any gaming, the input lag you noticed.

I should've been more clear. I was actually looking to see if the previous poster had any feedback on his buying the TV. Thanks for the thread though.
