I know there are new models coming out in April but will those be better than the current options available? I know very little about the HDTV stuff as we are upgrading from a 10 year old CRT. I was going to pick up the GT50 for $1514 @ http://www.datavis.com/cgi-bin/product.cgi?prrfnbr=652462&site=PRGB but it seems that the price is quite high considering people have reported picking up the TV for significantly less. I'm also seeing that an ST60 can be picked up for $1250. Then theres the whole Samsung series I haven't looked into so I'm just really lost as to what to pull the trigger on.

EDIT: The TV will be situated in a well lit room but it has shades on every window so the room can be made instantly dark.

I appreciate any help!

Samsung doesn't make a 55" Plasma, the closest sizes are 51" or 60". The new F8500 seems to be getting great feedback.

If you're intent on a 55 incher, i would seriously consider looking into the new ST60 over the discontinued GT50 (and this is from a GT50 owner) based on early reports from owners as well as Chad B's review.

Yes for a 55" HDTV, the new Panasonic ST60 appears to be a great value and improves on last year's ST50&GT50 series. The ST60's are just starting to appear at stores now, should be in bigger supply in the next few weeks.
Unless you prefer an edge-lit LED such as Samsung makes in the 55" size, but they cost almost double the price as the 55ST60.

I'm not DEAD set on a 55 inch, its just that a 55 inch would fit nicely in the pre-built. Is the F8500 worth taking a look at?

Looks like the ST60 is pretty favorable. One of the sponsored links off amazon has the TV for $1225, is that a reliable place to purchase?

For double the price, not unless you have an incredibly bright room.

Seems pretty great, the price of the 60" seems incredible too. eek.gif

I don't know anything about that site though. Also, their return policy seems practically non-existent.

Pretty good prices on some of the Panasonic Plasmas and some of the other sets on the first page did not check the other sets. Never used that particular site. Worth checking return policies though. Free shipping and no tax is good Good prices better than some of the well known sites . They do not accept credit cards so that could be a concern as far as complaint resolution /buyer protection solutions .
they could easily factor transaction fee or even charge additional to cover it . While they claim they are PayPal verified there is no indication that they accept PayPal for payment

I'm PayPal verified That's only because I have an Ebay sellers acct and use PP
on the rare occasions that I might buy or sell something on Epay

Beyond that Best Buy,Costco,Sams Club ,Amazon are hard to beat then there are Tiger Direct and Newegg usually some 2nd and third tier discount brands featured but major brands also (much like like Wall Mart .)

I've personally found Best Buy (just bought 2 new TV's at Best Buy last month ) ,Amazon and Costco hard to beat . lotta folks like Sams club as well.

some concerns from posters here at AVS

OTOH one AVS member bought a set and was happy with the outcome. YMMV

Yikes. I think I'm going to go with the Panasonic discount and pick it up off them for $1,274.99. Definitely not worth the $130 discount ($84 sales tax on the Panasonic website -- AZ online sales tax FTL.) if it turns out to be anywhere near a scam. That and I'm almost positive that star69 works for their company, he plugged their website WAAAAAAAY too much for me to feel comfortable with his testimony.
